"Are you still breathing?"

It's the question he kept asking in his head as he held Jacket close, terrified that the answer would be the machine he's attached to flatlining instead of the steady (if worryingly slow) beeps it's been emanating.

He's doped up on so many drugs right now it's not even funny, and it's lead to him constantly being either asleep or so loopy that he could barely mutter out responses to any of the things Beard said to him.

Not that Beard needed responses or anything. It was just that his mouth tended to run when he started getting nervous like this.

The last and only thing Jacket had been able to request of him was joining him in the cramped little hospital bed he'd been confined in, something Beard was absolutely not about to refuse him. It'd been a tight squeeze but it wasn't anything Beard wasn't used to already, curled up on his side as Jacket lay partially on top of him, head tucked underneath his chin.

It'd gotten them a few strange looks from the nurses who'd been coming in and out to check on him, especially considering Beard had really only sustained some scrapes and bruises and a twisted ankle (that he surprisingly hadn't made worse when hauling Jacket out of that death trap of a power plant). But none of them seemed to have the heart to ask him to get up, and he's more grateful than anything that they hadn't.

"You still with me, buddy?" he whispered oh so quietly, knowing that he really ought to let him rest but unable to push the fear from his mind that he'd stop getting answers.

Jacket still couldn't form words, but he did reach for Beard's hand, grasping for it blindly a few times before taking it and giving it a soft squeeze. Beard squeezed back, momentarily relieved in a way he knew would not last.

But Jacket was still breathing. And that was all he could really ask.

Beard x Jacket romantic headcanons [SFW]

(okay i know thats richards head sprite but....i still think of jacket as chicken man)

Honestly? Things didn't even change that much between them even after they both admitted their feelings for each other. It still very much felt and looked like a bromance which wasn't too far off from how it was before. They knew they genuinely loved each other which was comforting enough so no need (in their opinions) to announce to everyone.

Jacket had a tough time coming to terms about actually being in love with the other, it wasn't out of any type of homophobia but he was scared to go into another relationship since the passing of girlfriend. He didn't want to lose another person close to him, even after all these years he didn't feel confident that the coast was clear. He knew if his friend got hurt because of him then he'd never forgive himself.

Beard always felt something romantic for Jacket but kept it hidden because he thought it was just misunderstood platonic feelings and not that he actually wants to hold this man, kiss and keep him safe. Either way he was just thankful to be such good friends with Jacket with the bond they've grown to have.

It was such a relief after they weren't being suffocated by their growing feelings for each other anymore, but they didn't really know where to take it after that. It felt good that they had mutual feelings but they still enjoyed just acting like bros, romantic bros it might be but what did it matter? They loved each other and that's all that they cared about.

Beard and Jacket being bros headcanons!

These two, with all the shit they've been through? inseparable. They might not call or talk every single day but that doesn't mean they're not the absolute best of friends. They hang out whenever they have get the slightest opportunity to since they're still both relatively busy men with their own jobs and all.

Jacket shows a lot less emotion than the other but Beard still tries to make it known to his friend that if he needs a shoulder to cry on then he's always available, Beard still has yet to be taken up on that offer.

One of their favorite places to hang out and shoot the shit is actually the arcade, they may be grown-ass men but holy shit do they love it. Beard used to work at one [part of the hc im not saying this is canon LOL] so he knows all the tricks and has even, on occasion, opened up some of the games to cheat his way through it for more tickets. Jacket is an absolute god at them, rigged or not, so he doesn't need the cheats. he tries to avoid the sports-centered games that have you hit things with a bat.
