The *real* “I just got my first apartment” post

That other post seems to be for people with money. But you don’t have money. So what do you actually need for your first apartment?

A bed. Not an air mattress. Not a blanket fort. Not a mattress pad with a fitted sheet over it. An actual bed. You’re going to try to avoid it, especially if you live in a city where bed bugs mean not buying a mattress from Craigslist. Beds cost money (unless you can take the one from your childhood bedroom, in which case, do that and use the couch when you visit home). But fuck it, you need one. If you’re desperate, you might go with a futon, but the futon you can afford will break with the quickness. You might also go with a mattress on the floor, which seems like a good idea until it suddenly seems really dirty, which is because mattresses need air flow to stay dry and sanitary. If you don’t have a box spring and don’t want to drop the $40 on a cheap bed frame, you can use these guys to build a platform, and if you find plastic drawers the same height, you can even build some storage in there.

A dresser. You will try to find a way around this. It will end up with your floor covered in clothes within a week. Just find a dresser on Craigslist or go to your local auction (a great place to find cheap furniture in general). And don’t buy a cheap dresser to build yourself from K-Mart or Wal-Mart, because it will break and it will likely be more expensive than a Craigslist/auction dresser anyway.

A TV. It doesn’t have to be new or huge or advanced. But you want a TV. Don’t try to skip the TV for something more trivial. You’ll regret that quick.

A couch. Specifically, an old, comfortable couch. One you don’t mind falling asleep on or letting guests sleep on. Don’t spend a lot of money. Couches will find you. Don’t overthink it. It’s your first apartment. Nobody expects you to have a perfectly curated adult home. Just get a comfy fucking couch. And if you get two, you can use cinder blocks to make stadium seating in your living room!

A table. You will ruin it, so get a shitty one. Learn your lessons on something cheap and disposable.

A full(ish) kitchen set. If these things don’t appear from your parents or your roommates’ parents, you need to buy a pot and pan set, silverware, a silverware organizer, at least one sharp knife (and let’s be honest, you’re gonna want a knife block and they’re only like $11), at least one mixing bowl, a colander, a cutting board, a couple of storage containers, plates, bowls, glasses, and mugs. You’ll figure out what else you need as you need it, based on your own kitchen habits. A lot of this can be picked up at the dollar store if you have one near you. And if you don’t bake often, disposable baking pans are your friend. 

Hand soap, dish soap, wash-your-ass soap. Nobody likes poor hygiene. You also need toothpaste and floss. And deodorant.

Flashlight and candles (nothing fancy). In case something goes wrong.

A plunger. In case something goes really wrong.

A toilet brush. Your momma probably never let the toilet form rings (or let you let that happen), so it might come as a shock how quickly and easily those shits form.

A shower curtain and liner. Or even just the liner. Don’t get the floor wet.

Sponges. You have no idea how many sponges you’ll need.

The rest, you’ll stack over time, but these are the things you need.

things to remember when you move out

•always have bottled water in your house/apartment •pay your bills on time •wash your dishes everyday •don’t tell anyone you don’t trust you live alone •call your mom and tell her you love her •make sure you have extra toilet paper •remember to close the curtains when changing •lock all the windows and doors at night/before leaving the house •double check that the stove is off •don’t leave lights on too much •use real plates instead of throwaways •have flashlights in every room •fruits and veggies are important •night lights aren’t just for babies and kids •electric and water bill are more important than cable •don’t eat out too much •do your laundry •it’s okay to ask for help •own at least two recipe books •never lock yourself out •but don’t hide a spare under a mat/plant •don’t open the door without knowing who it is •mop •wash your bed spread a lot •make sure you always have food in the fridge •if you feel unsafe call someone •candy/snacks are not meals

Tips from my dad about buying a car

- Go in at the end of the month - Buy the model of the year right before the model for the next year comes out (dealers get desperate to sell the old models) - Refuse to put any money down. Say that if they ask you to put down money, you’ll leave - Seriously. If they ask you to put down money say you need to go and walk out - If there’s another dealership nearby, tell them that you’re walking there right after you leave - If a deal seems unfair but you really like the car, tell them you’re going to another dealership and leave. Chances are, they’ll call back the next day with a better deal - If possible, after the first call wait till the last few days of the month and they’ll likely call again with an even better deal - Look around for family and friends that need a car. If you buy more than one car from the same dealership you’ll get a much better deal - If a family member/friend is looking for a used car while you’re looking for a new car or vice versa, still get the used car from the same dealership - If you decide to buy a new car after a few years, trade in the old car and buy a new one from the same dealership. Companies appreciate loyalty and will likely offer you a lower price

Tips for living alone for the first time

I moved out a year ago and thought it'd be cool to share what I've learned so you don't have to suffer as much :,)

Decide a day to sit down and pay all bills and everyone

Know and accept you won't get your initial budget right, it took me a year

Google is your friend, but people are better.

Especially when looking for cheap markets and places to eat, or safe streets to walk around, people know more than google.

4. Speaking of cheap markets... get those (free) memberships for discounts. But most importantly, dowload and check every supermarket app and search for the cheapest one.

5. When looking for a place to live, try to speak with people who live there and check google maps reviews and your countrys site for custumers complaints.

6. You likely don't need to clean as often as your family told you, but cleaning your place will make you feel better. And you gotta clean the fridge. And hair. So much hair.

7. If you don't have a fridge, just a small cooler, check if the building has a common fridge/kitchen and Don't. Be. Shy to use it please.

I recommend not moving into a place without a fridge if you don't plan on eating out or going to the market every two days.

8. Carry your documents with you, or write them down or make a copy. I recommend not carrying the original since if you lose it/get mugged it's a pain in the ass to get it fixed.

9. Cook as much as you can in one go, but don't overwhelm yourself. Get those washed vegetables and cut onions, do what you need so you don't end up exhausted and crying on the floor... not that I've ever done that myself...

10. It's gonna feel hard at times and that's ok! The freedom is worth it, and after a year I'm really happy with all the progress I've made

11. Avoid pets, especially in a scenario that you're moving around or in a small studio or with financial difficulties (this can change from ppl to ppl etc)

12. Join or make a chat group with everyone in the building, without the sindicate so y'all can be honest about complains and create a single, solid complaint before showing it to the sindicate. (apartment manager? syndic? assignee? idk, whoever fixes things)
