It was a time when the internet was still sort of in it's infancy, more simplified, and visiting AoEH was a place of pure magic (for me it certainly was, still is!). I still remember those early days, at least since late 1998, when I first visited this place. And while this is undoubtedly, as promised, the definitive version of Age of Empires, it’s not really the Age of Empires that makes people swoon when they remember it. A mountain of maps and objectives can’t disguise the fact that you’re playing with the same small deck, the same units and buildings, in every campaign. I still predict you’ll tire out before you finish every campaign.

This game is proof that VNs were great even in the 90s. Overall 4/5 and absolutely worth playing. Also personally I would have liked to see more gore/violence scenes, there are only a handful compared to the amount of sex/miscellaneous CGs. The gore does a much better job of having a purpose, though it still feels like pointless violence at times. That's fine, but I think the story would have greatly benefited if the sex had more of an impact on plot progression. The sex scenes are varied and plentiful, though most of them seem to be there just for the sake of sex. I played mostly for the (in my opinion) stellar artwork and because I was in the mood for a gore/horror VN. As a result, it ends up being difficult to follow and requires a second or maybe third play-through to really grasp all of the plot's nuances. Even up to the very end, the plot kind of kept going all over the place - such as people changing identities, motives changing, entire character background stories being flipped around. And speaking of twists, there seemed to be a lot of them. The story itself is fairly unique but has some twists that didn't really make sense to me, despite the fact that I didn't skip very many dialogue scenes (very rare for me to actually read a visual novel, honestly). It's not a huge issue since the game is usually pretty good at hinting where you need to go next, but it did frustrate me to the point of having to take a break from playing it.

As your horse-drawn carriage enters the town of Helgen, you learn that the Imperials wish to execute you along with the Stormcloaks. The game opens slowly with your character riding quietly in a cart with a few other apprehended prisoners who you soon learn are rebels who refer to themselves as the Stormcloaks. Typical Elder Scrolls fare there, but the immersion has been improved drastically. This really shows in Skyrim’s opening sequence in which the player is set to be executed. After getting their feet a little more wet with Fallout 3, Bethesda made enormous ground. Unfortunately it ended up feeling a little sloppy in Oblivion, as it was clear that Bethesda’s dabblings in fully voiced NPCs was unable to hit a steady stride.
