When I temporarily left the JO fandom almost half a yr ago by now, i didn’t think things would change all that much and from the looks of it, not much actually has (fic’s, art, gif’s, shitposts, the usual fan shenanigans that I’ve missed oh so terribly 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠👍👍👍👍👍👍).
But with recent discoveries many have made, I started to wonder, what happened to them? What could’ve possibly happened for them to start using fucking generativeAI of all things. If the message their trying to convey as a band is supposed to be something along the lines of peace, love, tolerance and (pretty wishy-washy depending on how you see it / = 2 =; \) social justice, why not just hire fanartist’s like they’ve been known to do or hire a professional while also making sure a through background check has been done before going forward with any business. No matter how much I try to wrap my head around it, nothing still seems to make even a lick of sense!!
Seemingly being burnt out while creating the 3rd album and up to now could have something to do with it perhaps but at the same time, stooping so low you resort to a literal machine with no comprehensive understanding of soul or how real humans have this totally super amazing power of creating practically anything they could ever image with their *OWN* bodies just reeks of laziness and the feeling that tho as much as it hurts to say atp; they might simply just not care as much as they once did for the fans/creditability as artists.
Now I’m grossly aware this could honestly be me reaching so goddamn far out of proportion you’d probably be able to see my hands all away from mars, and or getting wayyyyy to wrapped up in my own feelings to actually make something semi coherent without thinking of catching the nearest plane to Slovenia and getting them a better pr time all on by lonesome. (fr literally so so so sorry if this sounds a little erratic since I only found out about…..whatever you wanna call this a few hrs ago but I’d of definitely crawled into a hole somewhere and scream my lungs out if i didn’t talk to someone, anon or not 😭😭😭😭😭😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫)!!!
I guess what I’m honestly trying to say is we genuinely can’t go about this quietly or act like everything is fine and that it isn’t allat deep, every branch of the fandom will need to make a moderate amount of noise if we want any chance in hell of our boys seeing exactly how much damage their actively contributing to. A perfect example of such ways being the fan letter which could most definitely help get the message across of what we *R E A L L Y* want to see from them, the less escapable we make the issue, the more likely something could be done about it afterall :3
(It runs a lot deeper that just using AI tho, like if ur gonna do smh as shitty as that atlest be honest about ur intentions bro!!!!!! When has being immature and bending over backwards full knight in shiny pants mode ever helped win an argument bffr ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️),
On the contrary of everything I just said, truly very much hope you’re having a delightful day/evening/night/morning and doing well outside of hellsite life + thriving in other fandoms in general especially cuz seeing ur down right scrumptious, gorgeous, awe inspiring, perfectly perfect, quiet literally *ETHEREAL* art here and there knows just how to leave any living person with eyes and taste(™️) speechless and wanting plenty more =>U<= :’DDDDDb!!!1!23!2!1!1
Signed with luv, spaghetti anon🍝🎀…&~~<3
I completely agree!! Of course we don't know what goes on behind the scenes, I can definitely see them feeling burnt out and maybe struggling to connect with the fandom the way they used to. Ofc this is speculation but it doesn't seem like a huge stretch considering Chatgpt ahh letters they send every Sunday. I also agree that even if you don't care about their use of AI and don't see it as harmless, at the very LEAST they should be transparent about it. That's like if I randomly started posting AI generated content without telling anyone lol Its pretty scummy.
I'm really happy there's fans that started the open letter movement cuz even if it might not get a response, I do think it would show JO and their team how disappointed we are, especially considering they used to hire real artists and designers for promo stuff. Lowkey wish we could go back to the era when the Damon photos slowly started getting revealed 🥲 That was peak JO for me.
Thank you so much for hyping up my art btw, that's so unbelievably sweet of you :"D❤❤!! JO can hire me next, I'll even do it for free/lh Also the way you type is very cute.....reminds me of a mutual I used to interact with a lot 👀🔎
Anyways thanks for this message, you make some good points and I'm happy we as a fandom are able to discuss things like this <3

OPEN LETTER TO JOKER OUT
TL;DR: This is about their usage of GenAI, if you don't care or don't agree with our stance, don't interact with this post.
Hi everyone! After the release of the new cartoon series by Joker Out and with the raising concerns on their usage of AI, some members of JOblr on discord decided to group up and write an open letter to Joker Out about their usage of GenAI.
We are looking to have as many signatures of people who agree with this letter as possible. Feel free to share this outside of Tumblr BUT DO NOT POST IT AS YOURS! After we are done collecting signatures, we will post it officially and then you can post it too!!
How do I sign?
You can leave a reply on this post, or send an anon ask to me with "Your Name, Your Country". If you want you can add ONE social media handle.
Example without handle: Leonor, Portugal Example with handle: Leonor, Portugal, @/sparkles_oflight on Instagram
Why add the social media handle?
It's to prove we are all real people behind this project. However, we won't force anyone who wants to keep their social media handle private to add it. We wish to protect people's privacy after all.
How long do I have to sign it?
You have one week from the time this post is made online. We won't take any more signatures after this, and the post will be made private.
I signed it. What then?
We will share the letter on Instagram and tag all the Joker Out members. Story templates and post templates will be shared on Tumblr, too, in case someone is interested in sharing on their own social media platforms.
[Letter, undercut]
Dear Joker Out,
We are a collective of fans composed of non-artists, artists, writers, singers, and many more. First, we would like to make our intentions clear: we are not trying to spread hate (“don’t count on us for the game of hatred”) but rather address the recent usage of generative AI (GenAI) by Joker Out.
Joker Out has openly used generative AI in their Karneval announcement video to add the balloons onto it. Additionally, there have been increasing concerns regarding the use of GenAI for the design of the poster. These are prompted by the lack of designer tag and details that resemble AI “art”, for instance, colour glitches and mistakes. Fans tried to address this situation since it wasn’t the first time Joker Out had shared AI-generated content—though the times they had shared were made by their fans. Joker Out hasn’t spoken on the issue or stated their position on AI usage since.
The band has now released a new cartoon series, which fans were quick to notice was credited to a person who doesn’t usually post content in that art style, nor has much content in general online, even though it seems somewhat polished. We trust the designer to have done their work, though the admission through a reply in Instagram comments of background and character inspiration done with AI does raise suspicion on the overall originality of the material, also because of other signs of possible generative AI. The reply has been deleted since, but this person has generated AI backgrounds in most of their posted videos, and with their lack of public portfolio, many fans concluded that GenAI was used in creating the cartoon.
The visual artists among us pointed out the following inconsistencies, which might have gone unnoticed by people who are not regularly involved in the creation of visual art:  the sloppy coloring of the characters' mouths, some of the background’s inconsistent coloring, and pixel outlines that look inconsistent and unintentional.
In good faith, we can believe that the collaboration with this artist may have occurred without this knowledge and led to Joker Out denying that the video was made with AI.
The band has, in the past, said they wouldn’t mess with AI:
“I honestly doubt that any of us actually uses artificial intelligence. I maybe used it when I had to translate something, but nowadays it’s already, as far as I know, if you just type some text in Google Translate, AI translates it for you. But that’s it, as far as that’s concerned. I think we all avoid it a little bit because we don’t really understand it, nor do we want to really, so it doesn’t take over our lives, and mostly so it doesn’t take over our artistic creation.” (JokerOutSubs x RADIOaktivno collab: Joker Out – Souvenir Pop)
And while people are allowed to change their opinions, it’s also important to take into consideration the consequences of using generative AI.
Generative AI is different from the AI we had seen for most of the Internet’s history—It’s not the same as the AI Google uses to show websites with the words you searched for, or the same as the algorithms that operate social media. According to the University of Illinois, “AI is used in predictive analytics, natural language processing, and autonomous systems. Generative AI is used to generate information.” OpenAI’s business model (the owners of ChatGPT) is based on GenAI. It reads information from a variety of sources and it provides an answer to the prompt: text, image, sound, you name it. Even if the information is factually wrong, or there is no information available online about the topic in the end, ChatGPT will still give an answer and even make up sources for it. GenAI is not only a tool for spreading misinformation, but also doesn’t obey the laws of copyright, since it takes data from various websites without consent from the creators and profits from it.
Big studios like Disney and Universal are currently suing Midjourney, another GenAI company, because of how GenAI operates. Every piece that’s generated by AI is based on a style that existed before. For example, if you ask GenAI to create a piece in the same art style as Van Gogh, it would be able to recreate something that’s somehow similar to the style he developed throughout his whole life. The majority of data used by GenAI is not of dead artists' works, but of living artists. Every time an “artwork” is created with AI, there is at least one artist who is being stolen from. If GenAI has been used at all while creating the cartoon, art has been stolen from artists who spent a long time developing their craft and get no credit.
The same applies to music. What if someone were to generate music that purposely copied Joker Out’s style and profited from it? Doesn’t that seem unfair? Joker Out spent nine years developing a personal style for someone to just type a few words and sell it as their own. You know it’s possible to do it without GenAI—without feeding this broken system, without disregarding copyright laws.
Joker Out has worked with fan artists in the past to make the Šta Bih Ja music video and the cover of Everybody’s Waiting, and the fans loved it and connected to it! It felt like there was a real connection between the band and its fans—a bond to create something together.
Though we understand the band doesn’t always have to work with fan artists, the usage of GenAI as an alternative to hiring an artist helps this connection be weakened. Instead of this bond between the band and the fans, these recent instances of GenAI use have some people in the community starting to feel like the connection is fizzling out.
As mentioned in the beginning, our mission with this letter isn’t to hate on the band, but rather to share genuine criticism in hopes that it can be heard. We don’t blame you for messing up. No one is perfect, and neither are we. We don’t expect Joker Out to be aware of everything that’s problematic or isn’t, but lately it seems that the band is just not putting as much passion into these projects because of the concerns we raised. There’s also the question of whether the emails written on the OpenStage—which are supposed to be a personal message from the band to the fans and have always been met with so much excitement for that exact reason—were also written with the help of AI, due to the recent shift in language, tone, and formatting.
Joker Out has listened to their fans in the past and given them a platform to share their creations and speak out. As fans who wish the best for the band, we wanted to voice our concerns about the consequences of the usage of GenAI and how damaging it can be. We hope that you will take our concerns into consideration and that, when you hire people to create art for you, you might rather pick someone who creates art out of passion rather than using an AI model that has stolen its style from other artists. If Joker Out still wishes to use AI in their projects, at the very least, we wish for transparency when it’s used. Right now, we feel the need to approach any new post with caution because we don’t know if AI has been used or not.
We love this community we have all created together—band and fans—and we only wish for it to flourish and continue to feel like the warm and welcoming space it is now, rather than to be tainted by mistrust.
Sincerely,
[list of people here]
Last but not least, thank you everyone who helped writing this letter 💜 I can't believe our biggest "argument" was over the grammar of one sentence. It really shows how united a group of people with a common goal can be 💜

What I personally find especially weird about the AI thing is the fact that JO has literally worked with fanartists before?? I can give the benefit of the doubt to a certain degree but I'm sorry there's no way they're oblivious to how the art community sees generative AI when they've directly interacted with fanartists and fan culture. The logo for that one big gig being AI is especially ridiculous because you could easily get a real graphic designer to cook up a way better design. They've had a fanartist animate a music video for them so why on Earth would they generate a logo???
I hope them using Chatgpt for writing the weekly mail isn't true but if it is, that is so incredibly lazy and ridiculous 🤦‍♀️ To clarify, I'm not personally attacking them and I still very much enjoy this band but the use of generative AI deserves to be called out, especially if its being used by people who they themselves are literally in the creative industry

The BIGGEST problem that JO currently have is not their use of AI, but their dishonesty and lack of communication skills. Like I said earlier in the reblog of a post speaking about this very subject, I'm not telling anyone to grab pitchforks and torches, but it would be nice to talk about what we're looking at.
They don't disclose the use of AI willingly, as they should, but instead they have to be pressured to do it. And even then - the artist behind the animation has removed his comment informing of the AI use. There's no honesty, and that causes mistrust.
Everyone can decide for themselves if using AI for inspiration for some of the characters and to create backgrounds in the animation is a step too far, or not. Or if them using AI to generate a logo for the biggest concert in the history of the band is a step too far. Or if them using chatgpt to write their own weekly update emails is a step too far. But any of those examples would be much less grating if they were at least honest about it from the start.
Maybe it's a hot take for some - but YES, I care more about artists disclosing the information about them using generative AI, including their promotional material, than about them using AI at all. We're all slaves to capitalism and there is no ethical consumption under capitalism and I don't expect purity from ANYONE, celebrity or not. But a speck of honesty would be fucking nice. I don't want to keep catching them like children with their hands in a cookie jar.

I can't believe I managed to make it so quick. I sent the first picture of me planning it on May 11th and on May 14th the first square was done (making the square took around 4 hours) 😁
This was also a great stash busting project 😁 I only had to buy 3 skeins of yarn for this and the rest I already had 👌🏼👌🏼
