I pretty regularly see people key in to the idea that elias was deliberately using statements to keep jon on a leash and control his movements in s3; he obfuscates it in mag 102 and claims he didn't really have a rationale for what he was sending then admits in 160 that he was carefully choosing ones to nudge jon towards specific avatars, and he sends them frequently enough that jon never has time to step away and keeps coming into conflict with georgie. what I don't often see brought up is that basira did a version of that first, she fed jon a slow drip of gertrude tapes when he was a murder suspect and she thought he might be a flight risk (or, at least, that's how daisy tells it, imo she seemed to have at least some personal investment seeing as gave him one more after getting the exonerating CCTV footage). she didn't know that there was any supernatural compulsion involved but still very quickly made the call that cassette tape freak jonathan could be subtly influenced via the strategic application of cassette tapes. woman with consistent morals and no duplicitous tendencies.

#drinks talk tag#reblogging that Melanie post got me thinking about how much hate there was for Melanie and all the characters who didnt like Jon#back in the day#it was such an interesting mindset#bc people seemed to take some characters reactions to Jon very personally#and there was this air of almost entitlement?? and I want to know how that developed#did they rock up to the podcast expecting it to be the nice to Jonathan show#or was it like a gradual thing like they were listening and thought 'okay I bet next episode is gonna be the one#where everyone is nice to jonathan' and then getting pissed off in real life when that didn't happen#I remember being so afraid to interact with anything contrary to that mindset because the biggest actors in that circle could be so mean#but now I look back on it and I think#wait a second#that was really stupid#something I really like about tmags is that it is exactly what it promises to be#why was the fandom run by people who felt entitled to it being a fundamentally different story than it was#and why did I want those people to like me so much#anyway I guess what I mean is conflict is what makes stories good and I'm grateful for all the characters who were mean to Jon#because they provided the conflict that made the story what it is#and I wish I had not spent my most active time in this fandom feeling like I had to adhere to a mindset that was antithetical to#the story I love so much to avoid getting vague posted about on tumblr.com#mag is right the social panopticon will really mess with a guy#shout out to Melanie King hands down the best Jon hater on the show never quit queen
