apropos of everything I've been doing a little queer history project for work since it's pride month, where we post a little snippets of US queer history every day of June. and it's uuuuh it's genuinely incredible how many landmark moments in our history start with "so a bunch of queer people were being relentlessly harassed by police for the crime of existing in public." and it's not that I loved cops before this, don't get me wrong, but it's really laid out so starkly how little reading you actually have to do to realize that the police exist first and foremost to perform state sanctioned violence and emotional terrorism against undesirable groups of people, which includes queer people as well as people of color, disabled people PARTICULARLY those who are visibly mentally ill, the poor and unhoused, immigrants, sex workers, and all combinations of the above. like. that's what cops is, that's the purpose of cops. anything niceys that a cop has done for you personally or any loved ones you have who are cops don't erase what cops are for.
