GRAYSON MADDOX WOKE UP feeling lighter that morning. he woke up feeling like someone had hollowed his chest out and filled it with naked sunlight instead -- and it wasn’t a coincidence that this sudden sensation of lightness arrived around the exact same time carter moved in with him. the first thing his eyes caught sight of when they flickered open was the dress he’d hastily torn off her body the night before sitting there on his bedroom floor. their bedroom floor. memories of last night came back to him in waves. the kisses had slowly dissolved into whispers as they lay side by side until the storm outside softened and their words lulled each other to sleep, as they did most nights. getting out of bed, grayson moved along the hallway of their small apartment until he reached the kitchen. leaning against the doorframe, grayson crossed his arms together and allowed himself a second to take in the sight of carter wearing nothing but his hoodie. granted, it fit her just as a regular dress would.
INVOLUNTARILY, ONE CORNER of his lips tugged up into an easy smile as she turned her head to look at him. ❝ scrambled ❞ he decided after a moment of deliberation, despite knowing just as well as she did that they were probably going to end up ordering breakfast in again. pushing his length off the doorframe, grayson moved over to where carter was and wrapped two arms around her petite shoulders, pressing his lips onto the top of her head and peering over at the contents of the frying pan ❝ gordon ramsay is shaking in his boots right now ❞ he bantered, only realising just how hungry he was when he caught a whiff of the cooking. maybe they weren’t going to order in after all.
@rcquiems
IF SOMEONE HAD TOLD HER this was where she would end up, she would have laughed right in their face at the sheer ridiculousness of it. —there was no way, she’d though, no way she would ever move in with HIM, the only guy whose guts she’d hated right from the very beginning. it was ridiculous. impossible. less likely than the least likely thing one could ever imagine. and yet—there she was, standing barefoot in the middle of the kitchen in an apartment they share, frowning at the eggs she had frying in the pan and wondering if it was too late to call it quit and order something from the diner across the street.
SUNDAYS HAD CHANGED quite a bit for her since it all began. she’d started going out for a run less and sleep in more —living a little slower and allowing herself to enjoy the languid way time seemed to move whenever she pulled his hoodie over her head instead of donning her usual running gear. —it was a change in her routine, something she felt like she was supposed to hate. and she would have—she would have hated it if she didn’t love that look on his face when she turned around to look at him more. ❝ sunny side up or scrambled ?? ❞

one thing she hadn’t realized up until she was sitting there at the edge of her bed, clutching onto the phone in her hand so tight that all her knuckles turned white, was just how deafening silence could be. the minutes seemed to have stretched longer as she sat there, hearing every single breath she’d drawn in and let out, stuck between being painfully aware and entirely distant from herself. —in all honesty, she was actually quite surprised by how long shed managed to hold on with the lack of sleep, having gone through nights tossing and turning and not being able to get more than a few hours of shut eyes. and as exhausting and dysfunctional as it sounded, it was not something she hadn’t experienced before. this was not the first time she’d felt like she was on the verge of breaking down, being tided over by the fear, anxiety and everything she’d grown so used and so good at hiding. —but it was the first time she hadn’t even consider the alternative, the path she usually took when she need her hands to stop shaking. if this was to happen sometime over the years they’d known each other, there was no way carter would ever call up on him in a time like this. vulnerability was not something she’d been too proud to show, especially to those people she had no intention of keeping around. —but the universe, as she’d learned, had its own plan —and the last person she would ever wanted to see in the best day had somehow become the first person she’d called when things were the worst.
it was not until she’d heard the tap on the glass that carter’d snapped out of the little trance she was in. shifting her gaze from where it was staring blankly at the wall, she watched as the familiar figure climbed through her window. it never failed to amaze her just how he’d manage to make it work, considering the size of his frame. —but none of that mattered now that he was here, after what felt like an agonizing hour she’d waited for him. it was not until then that she’d realized just how tired she was, when she followed along with his guiding movements without the usual stubbornness in the way she moved. —once her head was finally on the pillow, she turned to rest on the side with her entire body facing him, her face tilted up just enough to look at him with her eyes wide but weary.
waiting for her to get into bed, grayson slid his watch off and set it aside on the nightstand before getting into bed with her. all six-foot-three inches of him were tense the second his body sprawled out next to hers but by some sort of alchemy, he quickly began to loosen up into the mattress in a matter of moments. resting on his stomach, gray’s eyes flickered over to the landscapes that told stories of sleeplessness beneath carter’s eyes, watching her long lashes slowly brush against the very top of her cheekbones with every blink. almost as if it were contagious, grayson’s drowsiness hadn’t caught up with him up until he’d noticed just how tired carter was. he knew it wouldn’t take much for them to lull each other into a long sleep -- longer than most nights for him, at least. grayson’s hand trailed over to the small of carter’s back, his hand slipping in beneath her t-shirt so that it rested on her bare back, his fingernails grazing ever so gently into her skin as he rubbed circles against it, his hands slow ❝ just get some rest ❞ he spoke in a voice that was just barely over a whisper, watching her watch him through heavy-lidded eyes ❝ everything’s always ten times lighter in the morning ❞ of course, he wanted to ask. he had an entire world’s worth of questions on his mind, but he knew better than to push with carter. if she was going to tell him anything about her father, he wanted it to be on her own terms. for now, he was content with just being there.
feeling his trance finally catching up to him, his eyes growing heavier and heavier. and as he grew sleepier, he grew oblivious to his every day concerns when it came to his and carter’s relationship (if you could even call it that, that is). with that, he drew his hand away from her only to bring his arm around the small frame of her body, moving closer so that she was tucked into him. despite the frenzy running rampant in his chest right now, there was a painfully acute sense of serenity that was almost unexplainable to him. everything else had gone still in the world, and the only thing that tethered him to the conscious world was the feeling of her chest moving against his with every breath she took.

it was not an unusual thing for the tension ( non-sexual, mind you ) to rise rather RAPIDLY between them, even in any other situations where she was not already in such a SOUR mood. there was something so very IRRITATING about the way his smirk spread across his lips—slow and lazy like he knew exactly just what he was doing. “ right, ‘cause that’s what people do. just casually going out for a run in the middle of the night. ” —the sarcasm laced in her voice was heavy, even to her own ears. “ but trust me, if my ENERGY could do shit, i’d be repelling you so hard you’d be on the fuckin’ MOON by now. ” if not for the intense look in her eyes as she was practically glaring a whole in his face, it wouldn’t have been any different that their usual ‘conversation‘ ( if one could even call it that ). —and with only a blink of an eye as a warning, carter tossed the ball with whatever strength she had in his direction, aiming towards his chest—half expecting him to catch it and half hoping he’d miss. “ you wanna play ?? ” the look on her face was simply VICIOUS as she reached her hand down for the hem of her t-shirt, lifting it up and over her head, revealing the sport bras she had on underneath. —tossing the garment to the side, she took a step forward and brought herself closer to where he was standing, her eyes gleaming with challenge. “ FINE, let’s play. ”
if were anyone other than grayson, her sour tone and clear animosity probably would’ve been more than enough signs to send him sprinting away. however, HOSTILITY and animosity were two things grayson embraced just as easily as ardor and affection when it came to carter. tearing his eyes away, grayson sauntered over to the middle point of the court with the irritatingly cocky smirk still plastered on his lips “you’re right, that is weird. maybe i should just conform to society and just head to the basketball court to wrestle it out with the ball alone next time i’m wide awake at midnight” he quipped, quirking a single brow at her as their eyes met again. as she tossed another insult his way, grayson just pressed his lips together for a moment before furrowing his brows in feign disdain “again,” he started, “so much unresolved FRUSTRATION. it’s the law of attraction, johnston. it’s pure physics. even when you’re thinking about me hard enough to send me to the fucking moon, you’re still thinking about me. hard. if anything, this is your doing” out of nowhere, however, the ball came flying out of carter’s hand and towards his chest. while he’d managed to put his hands up just in time to catch it, the hard basketball still came thudding against his ribs, knocking half of the air out of his lungs. he’d be damned if he let carter see that, though. holding the ball with one hand and attending to his aching chest with the other, grayson watched as carter lifted her shirt over her head and tossed it aside. rich with avidity, grayson’s dark green eyes SHAMELESSLY and lazily ambled along the length of carter’s body as she approached him. when his eyes finally lifted up to meet hers again, grayson leaned over ever so slightly as he gave the ball a few dribbles “how about i make this worth your while?” he started, rotten thoughts beginning to manifest in his head “you win this, and i’ll leave you alone. for good. transcend to the moon myself” he offered, withholding the biggest catch of it all.

looking over at the new company next to him, grayson quipped a single brow in confusion ❝ you’re here now, aren’t you ? this ought to be a RIOT ❞ he mused, eyes flickering away for a moment before meeting juliet’s gaze once more ❝ so, did you come over here to tell me to go away ? ❞ he hummed, completely aware of the buttons he was pushing as the corner of his lip tugged up ever so slightly ❝ or did you need something else from me ? ❞
with a BRIGHT pink cosmo in hand, the petite female turned away from the bar and took a generous sip from the glass. the slight breeze sent her dark curls flying, framing her face as she moved towards a comfortable looking lounge chair a few feet away. her simple teal dress hugged her slender frame in all the right places and swayed against her legs as she walked and eventually lowered herself into the chair. the cushion was SOFT against her as she settled in and set her drink down beside her, soaking up the sun. after a moment or two, a shadow fell over her and she glanced up. “having fun yet?” the female inquired.

recognising her figure in any dress, grayson ambled over to the edge of the upper deck where carter was standing, her view overlooking the party crowd below. whistling a small tune as he approached, he stood right next to her and fitted his hand into the pocket of his tuxedo trousers. without even glancing at her, grayson could easily paint the expression on her face in his mind from his imagination -- bothered, hostile, stunning, and completely RENDERED with grayson. nothing out of the ordinary ❝ i can’t tell whether you look poetic or just plain maniacal and homicidal from way down there ❞ he mused, the hint of smugness ever present in his tone ❝ searching for the next HEART to chew ? ❞

as he downed the last bit of his whiskey, grayson’s eyes TOPPLED over when lainey walked up next to him. setting his glass down at the bar, grayson’s gaze quickly took its drag up and down lainey’s figure in slight disbelief ❝ i mean, you definitely look the part. if that’s what you’re asking ❞ he said, the corners of his lips catering up ❝ but i think asking defeats the whole purpose of blending in ❞ he mused, ❝ does it ? because i’m about to fall asleep on this bar right here ❞
the silk dress lainey wore felt foreign against her skin. the blush colour combined with the long slit running up her left thigh was a little TOO much for her, but it wasn’t her dress to begin with so who would she be to complain ?? the sister she’d borrowed it from assured that it suited her, so lainey kept her lips sealed. painted fingernails tapped gently against the champagne flute in her hand, still full as a sigh escaped her lips. “ am i blending ?? ” she asked, turning her head to look at the person who stood next to her. despite her smile, there was something about her posture that gave away her discomfort. “ i don’t even drink this stuff, you know. ” her tone was sheepish as she lifted her glass up slightly. “ –but it makes me feel kinda FANCY. ”

wiping his nose clean from any remnants of white power after his last trip to the bathroom, grayson straightened the collar of his tux and moved meticulously through the sea of people in gowns and borderline ridiculous suits. and he was doing a pretty good job at it, too -- until his shoulder collided with another’s, that is ❝ careful ❞ he said, regaining control of his step again ❝ girl from the closet ❞ he smiled, recognising her from the other night ❝ i’ll live ❞ he quipped, eyes flickering down to the clearly untouched drink in her hand ❝ i’d tell you that you look like you need a drink, but it looks like you’ve already beaten me to it. not a fan of yachts, then ? ❞
OUT OF place and awkward was all that calliope could feel in this situation, she didn’t belong here in her high school prom dress, her lace up sandals that barely cost more than ten dollars, she SIMPLY just didn’t fit in. why did she come ? to keep an eye out to make sure her sisters were safe, after all, a yacht and alcohol didn’t seem like a smart idea to her. the glass in her hand was cold, her focus on it as manoeuvred around the deck, staying out of the way, or at least attempting to, until her shoulder caught another, startling her out of her own thoughts. “ ━ ‘m so sorry.” she apologised, thankful that her glass hadn’t spilt. “are you okay ?”
