random fact: apollo 13 (the space mission where the oxygen tank exploded en route to the moon) was supposedly cursed even before it was launched. the launch time was 1:13 EST, which is 13:13 military time. also they were supposed to get to the moon on april 13th. sadly not on friday, but sunday, but yeah~

oh, if only she could say yes to that question. for a moment — just a moment — edelgard considered doing just that, watching her uncle walking away as if he hadn’t just insulted the emperor herself. of giving in and letting him see just how much she hated him for what he had done to her as a child. 

but no, right now she still needed him and his disgusting little cronies on her side, so she would have to just swallow her hatred and let him suffer later.

turning to her mentor, her ally, her professor, edelgard allowed a grateful smile to cross her lips. “there is no need for that, he will receive his payment for such things in time.” after her war with the church was through, then she could go to war against the hidden enemies her uncle ran with. “lord arundel merely... forgets, at times, that i am not just his sister’s daughter, but of the royal line as well. that is all.”

“     edelgard,   i would like you to accompany hubert and i to the opera.   i am already prime minister,   so my motives could not possibly be ulterior.   it will be fun and romantic and  only a little bit scandalous,   and i can employ the handkerchief move on the both of you.   i have plenty,   and they are all initialed.     ” 

perhaps it was dreary, but that was her life. at least so long as she remained unmarried in this political climate. maybe later, if she ever found a potential partner she could trust to stand beside her and not undermine her plans... then she could allow herself be swayed by romance and take consorts, as her ancestors had done before her. for now, however, there was too much work to do, and it came first.

but then her minister made his offer, and lavender eyes rose in suspicion. it was true, ferdinand had earned his position through his alliance during the war, more than by his family name. he had the role he had wanted, and of all the potential suitors, she did trust him more than most. but also...

warmth rose in her cheeks, a side effect to being flirted with so outrageously that edelgard still could not surpress. “and barge in on such a romantic scene you have planned? i couldn’t...”

suspicion crept into her gaze at the first statement from the master tactician himself, but edelgard still remained silent to let him continue. and, when she was honest with herself, during the late nights spent going over war plans alone before rest... she agreed. “perhaps in another lifetime, things could’ve been different.” perhaps there, crests didn’t matter, they weren’t being manipulated by creatures masquerading as religious figures. perhaps there she had the childhood she deserved. “but dreaming of what could have been will not help us sleep better at night. i have made my choices, and i shall have to be the one who lives with them.”
