Questions of the Week #15
What’s abstraction good for? Describe some of the reasons why artists might employ abstraction in their work.
As far as I know, abstraction is used to create a mood or emotion, create symbolism, depict nonphysical ideas, or simply to create something aesthetically pleasing that is free from the bounds of realism. Artists can use abstraction as a way to break away from the photorealistic genre and tell a deeper story with their work - to do more with their art than just reflect reality. We have cameras and mirrors for than, so perhaps artists are now free to experiment.
What does having a physical space to make art mean for your process and how do you make your space work for you?
I remember talking about the creative space in our Creative Christian class ages ago. We read about how artists at Pixar were allowed to decorate their offices however they liked, and that creating an inspiring environment was a key element in their productivity.
It made me think about how I organized my space. I can’t say that I designed my workspace specifically as a creativity-inducing zone, but I made it to be comfortable, spacious, and reasonably organized. I made sure to paint the room a color that inspired a happy tranquility, and I also have art, motivational quotes, and important verses around the space.
I also enjoy painting outdoors. Something about the natural light, fresh air, vegetation, and a curious bird or two that really make painting more enjoyable.

Questions of the Week #14
How does the location or context of a work of art affect its meaning?
Location and context can either be really influential on the meaning of a work, or not really at all. I think that there are some works than can be made in many different types of contexts, and they will be interpreted relatively similarly. However, most works are heavily influenced by their context, perhaps because all people respond to their environment in some way, shape, or form, and artists are particularly sensitive to their environment and often create work that is directly or indirectly affected by their experiences or the context around them
Are there any particular activities that you do every day as an artist?
I don’t have any specific daily art-activities, apart from trying to have time to draw whenever I can and whenever I am motivated to do so.
However, since childhood I often traced shapes with my eyes - following the edges of objects and architecture, for example. Nowadays, I also pay a lot more attention to the color, light, and shadow of objects and scenes as well. I try to learn from my environment so that I can better appreciate the world around me and also try to recreate these observations in my work later.

Color Research: Natural Dyes
Tumblr media
It doesn’t quite pick up on camera, but the fabric turned out a lovely taupe-y/terra-cotta color.
I’m definitely going to look into some natural plant dyes sometime! I’ve already started collecting fallen rose petals - maybe something interesting will become of them?

Questions of the Week #13
What do you do to keep yourself motivated and interested in your work?
I love art and creating it is one of my favorite things to do. However, I do get burnt out sometimes and have to take a break for a few days or so before something I can create again. What motivates me is seeing other people’s work, finding tutorials and guides, and also seeing inspiring scenes out in my daily life.
Can art provoke change or transform our way of thinking? How?
Yes, I do think that art can provoke change or change how we think, particularly because people have a unique ability to derive meaning from what they see and experience. A piece of art can bring a problem to light in a way that we’ve never thought of before or help us notice something that we previously passed by.

Color Theory History
The Origins of Color Video
This video explains Sir Isaac Newton’s experiments with color and covered a few different subjects. Firstly, Newton was curious about how much of color is our imagination, or due to our own eyesight. I was shocked to learn that Newton inserted a stick between his eye and his skull to research color - of that experiment, he learned that he could replicate some colored shapes if he put pressure on his eye.
Then, the video covered Newton’s work with prisms, and how he noticed that the prism would separate out different rays of color from a single ray of sunlight. He coined the term “spectrum” to refer to the array of colors.
Next, Newton designed a new telescope that was free from the color distortion of the Galileo telescope, which used lenses to magnify.
Art History for Kids Video
This video showed a reading of a children’s book about Joseph Albers, an artist who researched color. Joseph spent around 20 years of his career experimenting with color relationships by painting simple squares. His work has influenced how color and color relationships are viewed and taught today.
What a lovely book! Such a fitting story and illustrations for our class!

1. Wow, the number of structured resources on this website is amazing! I suppose it makes sense that it takes a lot of people, time, and research to get to the understanding of the world that we have today, but it is still astounding to actually see the work of so many people at once!
2. This website has so many beautiful graphs, charts, and illustrations, all on one page! I would love to own a few prints of something like this!

Questions of the Week #12
How have the tools and materials of artists changed over time?
Artists tools and materials have changed as people discovered to mediums over time. From charcoal on cave walls, to textiles, tapestries, and clothing, to reliefs and sculptures, to mosaics, to paintings, to frescas, to all the other mediums we now have available to us. Nowadays artists can use a variety of mediums to create their work, including found items and even the digital space.
What impacts do you think commercialism and the media have had on your work? Is this good or bad?
Commercialism and media have both inspired me to create, and but also made creating artwork seem a little pointless sometimes. The world around us is filled with so many wonderful examples of creativity that I am inspired by and want to learn from, but the sheer volume of works in this fast-paced environment also makes it hard to slow down to enjoy making artwork and enjoy the works of others.

Color Research: Matching Magazine
Tumblr media
Well, there was an attempt to match the photograph..
Overall, though it was really challenging, I enjoyed learning more about color and learning how to depict a scene traditionally. I’ll definitely try the exercise again in the future, but perhaps with a simpler magazine clipping? Perhaps even do a digital version as well?
