🇺🇲 Eddie Valiant: Why? Because you made him laugh? Roger Rabbit: That's right! A laugh can be a very powerful thing. Why, sometimes in life, it's the only weapon we have.

National Walkout:
My school walked out for the national walk out at 10am and I have to say, this was one of the most exhilarating parts of my schooling so far (I’m a freshman in high school).
I didn’t expect so many people to walk, but almost the whole school did.
We went to the streets and yelled, shouted, and screamed our hearts out because this is not right. Among the phrases were “STOP KILLING US” and “17 SHOTS”
Some teachers stopped students by forcing them to chose between morals and grades (failing them on tests and marking them absent), in which we’re trained to choose grades.
I’m grateful my teacher didn’t make me choose, and that some teachers were out there with us.
Congress needs to act because this is just the beginning. We’re marching on March 24 and we won’t stop fighting.
America, you’ve taught us we can do anything if we have enough passion, and we have the passion. Don’t try and stop us. Work with us to save lives. We are the embodiment of every powerful message that has been taught to the world, and we are taking those to heart.
Fight WITH us, not against.

On Creating Characters- Six Points to Get You Started
As much as I like to complain about my weaknesses when it comes to writing, I’m happy to say that creating characters isn’t one of them. So for anyone who wants it- my quick guide on creating characters.
This list is for anyone who has a vague idea for a character but doesn’t have a plot or a role in the story for them to fill.  It’s for people who have a plot in mind, but lack characters to place in it. It’s for people who love those long, detailed character spreadsheets, but don’t have the patience (or know all the answers) to fill them out. The points I’ve listed below will probably overlap heavily and influence one another- for instance, “societal/cultural influences“ may inform both “philosophy“ and “defining relationships“. It pulls the character together.
Keep in mind that this is not everything you want to know about your character- you should continue to flesh them out as you write them. This is just a baseline, a starting point, an I-just-want-to-write-something-with-this-character-but-I-know-absolutely-nothing-about-them list so you can jump into writing with or without a plot in mind. It describes them as they are on a typical, ordinary day. As you continue to write and develop them, they will become more nuanced and take on a life of their own.

 Base Personality
Jot down some base personality traits. Don’t worry about getting an equal number of positive and negative traits down- or even which is which. Just feel out the character’s base personality.
Significant Historical Events
What events have had the greatest impact on your character (that you know of so far)? Again, don’t worry about getting everything- you can always add more here as they come to you later. Hit the major turning points in your character’s life.
Societal/Cultural Influences
What societal and cultural backgrounds do your characters have? Are they living/working/existing in an area where these influences are the majority or the minority?
Philosophy
What is your character’s default philosophy when it comes to right and wrong, or difficult moral choices? (I usually use the D&D alignment system for its simplicity- feel free to be as detailed or not as you wish).
Defining Relationships
What are this character’s defining relationships? Enemies, friends, and family are good places to highlight. Major conflicts and points of contention are great starting points for plots.
Goals
What does your character want more than anything? What are you preventing them from getting over the course of the story?  If any minor goals pop up while you’re writing, jot those down too.

DM Tip: NPC backlog
Lots of people stress out when their players go off on some kind of tangent, and feel that they need to over prepare their settings and their stories in order to compensate. I’m here to give you a simple solution to this problem that’ll not only save you a huge chunk of time but also help you improve your baseline DMing and writing skills.
As part of your DM prep routine, do yourself a favor and try to generate 20 random NPCs that your party could likely meet in their next session.  You don’t need to flesh these characters out immediately, all they really need are a few personality/story traits and a scene where they make a strong first impression. By keeping these characters floating, you give yourself supreme flexibility when you need to improv, or just want to add spice to an otherwise mundane interaction.
Keep all your backlogged npcs in a notebook or easily searchable document, perhaps with a nickname or easy identifier if you want to keep your notes brief. Over time you’ll build up a huge repertoire of characters totally unique to you who can be deployed in adventures and campaigns for years to come.
That former soldier who took up the plow might offer your players a ride to the next town on his wagon, or might be willing to share some rumors he knows if a partymember ends up buying his produce, or he might serve as a random dogooder who shelters the party for the night as they’re on the run from the baron’s corrupt bountyhunters.
That tea loving gnomish wizard and her skeletal bird familiar and might be the librarian at the local monastery, or a purveyor of arcane mysteries in the black market, or a member of the local council of mystic import.
The branded dwarven coward might serve as the quartermaster for a group of bandits, a moneychanger looking to rip off some out-of-towners, or a collector willing to make an investment in an up and coming group of delvers.
By stockpiling NPCs like this, it saves you monumental amounts of time figuring out the cast of your adventures, but ensures you’re not simply winging it by pulling actors out of thin air that your party will forget about as soon as they move off stage.

Quote
When you’re a kid, they tell you it’s all… grow up. Get a job. Get married. Get a house. Have a kid, and that’s it. But the truth is, the world is so much stranger than that. It’s so much darker. And so much madder. And so much better…

Benção irlandesa
Tumblr media
