To begin with scientific explanations hugs overpower the Cortisol, the hormone that generates stress, heart disease and high blood pressure by releasing Oxytocin, the love hormone and Dopamine, the pleasure hormone by stimulating the brain hence battling isolation. The immunity system increases and shields the body from various infections. The sternum or the breastbone receives a pressure (in a way where both the hearts meet as they are pressed against each other) and activates the emotional quotient of the being and the Solar Plexus Chakra. The thymus gland is stimulated that plays a major role in regulating and balancing the white blood cells. A longer period of hug lifts the level of the serotonin, uplifting the mood and ensuring happiness. The relaxation of the muscles releases the bodily tensions and circulation of the soft tissues soothes the body pains and aches. The skin conductance goes through a change due to the response of the galvanic skin due to the exchange of a hug. This leads to a balanced nervous system
Hugs help to build your mental stability as it gives comfort to the low esteemed minds. According to many scientists its effects are almost equivalent to several drugs working in a body. A simple hug can generate security and trust towards people who has distanced away from their loved ones. Touch is believed to be a language that fluently communicates various emotions through a single exchange developing a spiritual bond between the individuals promoting better and healthy relationships. Human beings experience this non verbal connection while hugging their pets and holding them close to express their affections. This breech of support is also received by embracing stuffed animals like teddy bears. This physical connection gives way to a transfer of energy that helps in fighting back fear. It has also been found that well hugged children turn out to be sensitive adults. The parental hugs are imbedded into the nervous systems reminding the mind at the somatic level and increasing one’s ability to love both the self and the others.
Geographical distance brings in a physical gap that fails to initiate this exchange of touch but it can be handled by putting in an effort to send in little box of happiness filled with their favorite things. One can send a hug gift like teddy bears and other such soft toysthrough the gift delivery methods to create an essence of existence at the point of their absence. It is both a physical and mental investment to establish a gesture of love and protection.
The origin of the word ‘hug’ can be traced back to the Old Norse word hugga, meaning comfort. It could be considered twin to laughter or meditation as it also calms our active, charged up body allowing the senses to relax and forgo the momentary tensions. The one giving the hug is equally benefitted and encourages the act of giving and sharing (of course with consent).  After all we all loved Olaf(a character from the Disney movie, Tangled) for he loved giving warm hugs!
