35/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Fantasy Destination’ and painting number 0018*/ #2000paintings #2000hb Since this was an expressive and personal piece, I only felt like I needed less than an hour to produce something that resonated with me. I used water-soluble crayons, which are presented like kid’s tools, but actually even as an adult, I found that they were quite satisfying and versatile, especially with a spray-bottle at hand! I wonder if anyone can guess the location. You will need: -Pastels/Oil Crayons (rich colours) -Paper/sketchpad Draw a place that you’ve fantasized about visiting- try to communicate an expressive feeling into your mark-making. Optionally include some notable landmark to help identify the location. If you ever go there, take a copy of the picture with you as a reminder! *Painting 17 is already completed and will be revealed on Christmas day! #6weekartchallenge35 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #drawingexperiment #art #photooftheday #illustration #design #drawing #picoftheday #artoftheday #artsy #colourillustration #terracottaarmy #china #xian

34/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Local Landmark’ I just went with this single design and forgot about the thumbnail sketches- I forgot about the thumbnail part. Anyway, it's a place that I call the 'Temple Bridge' or the 'Rainbow Bridge'- a bridge that was only completed a year or two ago in my town. You will need: -Sketching medium. (Bamboo pen would be ideal) -Board and pad. -Local landmark. Spend an hour sketching a few thumbnail designs from a landmark. Choose the best 3, and turn them into full drawings- these drawings should be relaxed and convey the feeling, rather than being technically accurate drawings. #6weekartchallenge34 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #drawingexperiment #art #photooftheday #illustration #design #drawing #picoftheday #artoftheday #artsy #pleinair #pleinairsketch #kimjunggi #karlkopinski #superani #China #chinese #chinesearchitecture #chinesebridge #chinesetemple

33/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Postcard’ OK, so I finally got around to this one- I chose my absolute favourite place, full of hundreds of memories with my family. It's a coastal holiday park in the South of England (on the 'Jurassic coast')- a place which we would frequent almost annually since I was a small child. I haven't been able to visit again since the pandemic started in 2019, so I've really been missing it. Not sure if it would qualify as a 'post-card' but still, I really just needed to get back on with the challenges! You will need: -Pen, Ink ,Pencil and/or colour. -Sketchbook/postcards. Create postcards of a favourite location. (City, village, hometown etc.) Should also break down the main imagine into a run of postcards, perhaps by cropping or focusing on certain features. #6weekartchallenge33 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #drawingexperiment #art #photooftheday #illustration #design #drawing #picoftheday #artoftheday #artsy #postcardart #picturepostcard

32/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Scenic View’ I started this one at the same time as exercise 31, since the café also had a compelling view down onto the street. I did the linework all in that one session. Unfortunately, I forgot to get reference photos for the colours, so when I tried to add colour today, I needed to recall the colours and lighting from memory, with mixed results. You will need: -Pen/pencils + colour pencils. -Sketchbook. -A spot with an interesting view. Create a drawing from an interesting spot- particularly somewhere elevated. Add colour as needed. #6weekartchallenge32 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #drawingexperiment #art #photooftheday #illustration #design #drawing #picoftheday #artoftheday #artsy

31/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Favourite Eatery’ This challenge is about going to your favourite eatery, and drawing it. Unfortunately, my preferred restaurant(s) were both closed tonight! So we settled on sketching in a random little place in the middle of town about 6 floors up. The food was good, the service was abysmal though! The sketch turned out alright- though I forgot to add the grey tones, and also forgot to thumbnail the layout. I just went ahead and did what felt right at the time. I also used this time to get a nice layout done for exercise 32- I'll add a preview to this post, but I'll be adding colour to the linework tomrrow. You will need: - Fountain pen - Brush marker (grey tones) - A favourite restaurant #6weekartchallenge31 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #kimjunggi #karlkopinski #superani #drawingexperiment #art #photooftheday #illustration #design #drawing #picoftheday #artoftheday #artsy

30/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Beautiful Landscape’ and 0012/ #2000paintings #2000hb So, the sunshine finally came out today! I went out on my motorbike just after lunch, and scouted around the nearby hillside villages and lakes. Eventually I realised that the sunshine was going to hide behind the clouds again, so I picked a popular lakeside fishing spot and set up my plein air equipment. (Fishing stool, clipboard, clip-on-water jar etc.)- I used the motorbike as a backrest. It was really pretty cold today, ~12C, so one full page and two more smaller paintings were enough for me to capture the general feeling of the lake. This first painting was a bit tighter and less expressive, so the following two smaller paintings were more expressive- though maybe a bit too much since a local fisherman asked me what exactly the paintings were supposed to be.. Oh well! Practice, practice, practice.
The second/third painting were a little more expressive than the first- I really wanted to play more with areas of colour and chucking a lot more water on the paper just to see what happens. I also treated myself to a Microsoft Surface Pro 8 for Christmas, so expect to see some digital work adding further variety to my output on here. You will need: -Watercolours. -Pencil. -Water soluble crayons (optional). -Sketchpad. -Sunny day* Produce a number of watercolour paintings in the most beautiful place that you can find. Sketch the layout in pencil first, then add the watercolours. Additionally, produce some extra close-ups/crops. #6weekartchallenge30 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #enpleinair #pleinairsketch #thumbnailsketch #drawingexperiment #art #photooftheday #illustration #design #drawing #picoftheday #artoftheday #artsy #watercolourpainting #watercolorpainting

29/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘City Quickly’ (Parts 1,2,3) So, I couldn't make it to the City, but I did take a hike up a mountain up to a Temple. Since the thumbnail sketches are only supposed to be 60 seconds long, they're just simple and not too great. But it's still nice to get some practice in, and work on my speed. You will need: -A busy Urban area. -Fountain pen or brush pen + water brush. -Sketchbook. Go to a busy urban area (City, intersection etc.) and take no more than 60 seconds to thumbnail out 4+ different scenes, Can turn 90 degrees between each sketch. #6weekartchallenge29 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #enpleinair #pleinairsketch #kimjunggi #karlkopinski #superani #thumbnailsketch #drawingexperiment #art #photooftheday #illustration #design #drawing #picoftheday #artoftheday #artsy

28/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘The Master-Baker’ and 0011/ #2000paintings #2000hb This challenge was fun! (And tasty!) I've made my fair share of apple crumbles, so this time I actually made some caramel to add to the filling (well, it ended up being more like hard toffee, but inside the pie it melted back down into a delicious sweet sauce..) Never quite as good as Grandma's original, but there's still a charm and nostalgia to this kind of baking/food. Anyway, the watercolour sketches were inspired by a friend-of-a-friend- she often posts really cute watercolour work on wechat, often centered around food or daily life. It's also nice to have a watercolour project turn out in a way that I feel quite happy with. I hope I can continue this momentum and improve my painting further. I might add extra (digital) linework to the paintings, since I felt iffy about putting physical marks over the top of my illustrations. For now I'm happy enough to share it as-is! You will need: -A fruit pie of some description (Store-bought is fine, but I recommend calling up your grandma and getting her Legendary Apple Crumble™ recipe…) -Watercolours and watercolour-suited paper. Bake that bad boy. Allow time to cool, and cut off a slice. Paint an abstract watercolour illustration of that beautiful baked bonanza- make sure the colours feel right to you. After drying, use a darker colour or marker to add linework to the picture. (Can also be done on a separate page/area and layered on top in Photoshop using the multiply layer function.) (Pro-tip: use ‘curves’ to eliminate most extraneous details on your lineart layer before setting it as a multiply layer. Can duplicate the multiply layer repeatedly to darken the linework also.) Optionally, you could combine the illustration with a copy of the recipe and send it out to friends, family and followers- Let them eat cake (ahem, pie)! #6weekartchallenge28 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #fruitbowl #fruitandveg #fruitandvegetables #fruitstilllife #stilllife #sketch #watercolour #watercolor #watercolorart #watercolourart #recipe #applepie #applecrumble

27/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Fruit and Veg’ and 0010/ #2000paintings #2000hb I took a stroll out to the fruit and veg market after class, and picked out different items based on the colour and texture rather than for flavour or usefulness (I'll look up some recipes online so some of the more obscure vegetables don't go to waste!) I also picked up some large apples in advance for tomorrow's exercise. I hope that they can do the job as cooking apples, since it doesn't really seem to be a specific thing here... Anyway, I set up a still life and got to work- The first part went quite well- using colour pencils to sketch down the shapes and layout for the piece. At first I was a little frustrated with my pan watercolours- the colours didn't seem to mix very well- however after a while I realised that the colour accuracy doesn't really matter for this exercise, it's more about layering different colours and media. However, some of the fruits and vegetables had such a lovely colour that I couldn't help but try to imitate them.. Anyway, I feel like it's not a bad attempt at an afternoon study- and now I have some tasty and healthy food for tomorrow! You will need: -Fruits and Vegetables, in a fancy bowl. -Watercolour, Pastel and coloured pencils. -Paper/sketchbook (smooth but thick is ideal). Pick out some appealing Fruit and Veg, arrange them in a nice bowl. Using colour, draw in the rough shapes with coloured pencil first, followed by large colour shapes with watercolour, and finally adding pastel. Work back into it as you please, mixing and experimenting with colours and mediums. Play with colour relationships to create vibrancy via complementary colours. Colours needn’t be accurate, use feeling and intuition rather than directly copying. #6weekartchallenge27 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #fruitbowl #fruitandveg #fruitandvegetables #fruitstilllife #stilllife #oilpastelart #watercolour #watercolor #watercolorart #watercolourart #colorpencilart #colourpencilart #illustration #artwork #picoftheday #artoftheday #portrait #artsy

26/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Clouds’ I really lucked out with the weather today! (Well, by local standards) We had a rare sunny-ish and warm winter's day, so I went up to the roof of my apartment and started sketching. I also had to bring my palm up to my face as I realised that my rooftop has a gardening space for the residents- so I could have used that for the 'Draw your garden' challenge. Whoops. The sky is still pretty hazy, but at least I could occasionally pick out the odd cloud formation- the slow pace and limited number of suitable clouds meant that I could take some extra time to relax, enjoy the sunshine, and sketch in more foreground details as I waited for the conditions to throw me something interesting. I enjoyed myself so much that I stayed a little longer and drew some of the strange ball-shaped devices on each of our rooftops (I think it's probably for water storage? Not sure though..) I also didn't bother bringing a blanket, since I have a little fold-able fishing stool that I like to take out when I sketch en plein air. You will need: -Fountain pen and paper/sketchbook. -Appropriate day for sketching the sky/clouds. -Blanket for comfort and lying back and gazing at the sky. -(Optional) Watercolours/pastels. Take some time to lie back, look up, and thumbnail some sketches of the clouds, particularly the pictures that they present/form to you. Could also use colour. #6weekartchallenge26 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #clouds #cloudsketch #cloud #skysketch #enpleinair #pleinairsketch #kimjunggi #karlkopinski #superani #thumbnailsketch #clouddrawing #drawingexperiment #art #photooftheday

25/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Children at play’ Firstly, I don't have my own kids, none of my nearby friends are parents to young children, and hanging out as a childless foreign man in a play-park might seem just a little bit odd! At best I'd become an object of curiosity/suspicion and therefore be unable to sketch unimpeded... So, I decided to find some middle ground and find a suitable photograph on #redditgetsdrawn I found that 'my son' from u/flyinhyphy was the photo that most resonated with me this time- probably the combination of the boy's expression, the funny activity and the natural feeling of the shot (There are too many 'posed' and contrived photos in that subreddit- I don't really want to draw those.) Anyway, from left->right, I firstly used my #muji #fountainpen, I really love the feel of using this pen, and the solid and reliable nature of its ink flow. I also didn't bother with pre-sketching. I need to push myself and own/work around my mistakes. Secondly, I used a #pentel #ultrafine #brushpen and cropped in a little to focus on his funny expression- I feel like it went fairly well, though I'd like to work on making my penmanship a little more expressive in future, as well as making the line weights and the 'lost and found' line work better. You will need: -A young child. (If, like me, you aren’t a parent to a young child, you can borrow a friend’s child, niece, nephew, grandchild, or make a sketch for someone online.) -A fast and accurate/clear medium (fountain pen, brush pen, micron etc.) -Paper/sketchbook. Create drawings of a young child(ren) at play. Make sure to work quickly as children are infamous for moving around and needing to nap shortly afterwards. Can also include the context/background of the playspace. Alternatively, draw the quiet/sleeping child and use a slower medium such as charcoal to capture a more sensitive and accurate sketch. #6weekartchallenge25 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #childrenatplay #childrensketch #childsketch #babysketch #babypainting #childpainting #funnydrawing #kimjunggi #karlkopinski #superani

24/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Home Garden’ Since it's Winter here, I settled for something reasonably close to a garden.. I found that working in oil pastels was quite nice, though I couldn't mix the colours too well as I only had my fingers for blending and mark-making. I also realised at the end of the session that one of the chairs was doing a magical balancing act... Whoops. Anyway, this is where the challenges apparently get a little more convenient- the theme is ‘close to home’ for this section. Come back tomorrow for challenge 25! You will need: -Colourful pastels -A home garden, or public garden, on a sunny day (Ah, it’s winter here and the pollution/fog is getting pretty bad..) -Any old paper is fine. Make an experimental, loose drawing of the plants and gardener if applicable. Use broad shapes of plants, adding loose details afterwards. Can start light and build to dark. Just play with the pastels and see what happens. #6weekartchallenge24 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #gardendrawing #oilpastel #oilpastelart #expressivedrawing #drawingexperiment #art #photooftheday #illustration #design #drawing #artwork #digitalart #picoftheday #artoftheday #instaartist #instaart #portrait #artsy

23/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Athletes in motion’ Before you scroll down, have a guess in the comments what exactly I was trying to draw/express in this sketch. Now, I know this one doesn't look very finessed or complete- and that's fine too- the point of this exercise was to use both hands and draw without looking at your hands, keeping the paper directly under your chest/line of sight. I permitted myself a chance to glance at the paper in order to make sure I wasn't drawing over a previous area when starting a new expression, but otherwise followed the rules of the challenge. ~ ~ ~ ~ It was kinda fun- I found a youtube video of a stationary camera at an Ice Hockey Rink and use that footage for me athletes. It worked out pretty well, and I think my expressions can read as hockey players? (the stick kinda gives it away?) Anyway, I should probably use a bigger sheet of paper next time, I ran out of space within 5 or 10 minutes. You will need: -Sheet of paper and pen/pencil/drawing implement. -Active people to draw from. Look at the people and use both hands to draw separate images to express what you see. Make sure to keep moving and keep looking at the people rather than your images. #6weekartchallenge23 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #sportsdrawing #twohandeddrawing #expressivedrawing #drawingexperiment #kimjunggi #karlkopinski #superani

22/42 of the #6weekartchallenge ‘Athletes in competition’ We're currently experiencing some pollution issues (PM2.5 AKA tiny particles that do bad things to lungs) So, in the interest of safety, I'll sketch this one from home, using video reference and forcing myself to work quickly and only rewind 2-3 times for most poses (I think it's fair, since videos aren't often shot from a static point for their entirety.) I went with fencing/swordplay clips from @corridordigital 's video "To The DEATH" and the opening fight from film 'The Duellists' (1977) I quite enjoyed this exercise, though it would be nicer to find time to draw real athletes in the flesh, so I can understand and work with the limitations of live-drawing for active subjects. You will need: -Sketchbook -Pens, Pencils, Charcoal etc. (A mark-making tool of some description) -Humans taking part in one-on-one sports (martial arts, tennis, badminton etc.) Find some sparring partners and use your medium to portray the overall feel and motion of the participants. Since they probably move a lot, use repetitive movements to work on the piece gradually. #6weekartchallenge22 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #sportsdrawing #brushpen #kimjunggi #karlkopinski #superani #theduellists1977 #tothedeath #starwars #duel #fencing #swordfight

21/42 of the #6weekartchallenge This is the halfway point! I wasn't able to get out to find a musician, so I settled for youtube and found inspiration from a kind of 'playing piano in public' video by @joejenkins I spent a little time with the water-soluble crayons and tried to express the feeling that his performance gave me. You will need: -Musicians/dancers/performers -Mixed materials (you want it to fit the music, so colours, brushes etc.) Find a performer(s) at the local church choir, live music venue, dancing square etc. Make at least one or two drawings of performers enjoying their craft. #6weekartchallenge21 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketch #Drawingemotion #drawmusicians #drawtheband #drawthechoir #drawthedancers #artistsdrawingartists #piano

20/42 of the #6weekartchallenge So, I kinda messed this one up a little- since the objective was to draw a crowd. However, in my infinite wisdom, I saw the crowd and thought 'too big, I'll take a quick walk and draw them when it's a little less hectic.' By the time I came back, all of the dancing aunties had disappeared... However, not one to waste an opportunity, I staked out my spot and drew the odd groups of stragglers for the next hour or so. The results were fairly pleasing! I followed my tried-and-true method of #pentelpocketbrushpen and M&G brush pen loaded with water. You will need: -Crowd of 5+ people (safety first!) -Mark makers (Fountain pen, dip pen, water-soluble crayons) -Paper/sketchbook Find a crowd, draw it in terms of body language and the general shape of the crowd. Don’t focus too much on the individual, rather look at the connections between people. Add background for context too. #6weekartchallenge20 #artist #artstudent #drawingaday #artchallenge2021 #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #drawthepublic #Drawingemotion #crowdsketching #drawthecrowd #sichuanprovince #sichuan #squaredancing #brushpen #brushpenart #drawing #artchallenge2021 #sketch #sketchaday #outdoorsketch #inkdrawing #pleinair #kimjunggi #karlkopinski

19/42 of the #6weekartchallenge A lot, lot, lot of fun with this one- I finally built up the courage to sit on my busy street and do some sketching over at the side. I brought a stool out with me, but one of the shop owners was very kind and offered a proper chair and table to work at! I started right after work, on my way home, and didn't move from my spot from 17:30 until 19:00 when the lack of light and dinner time (the Uncles all went home for food) convinced me to call it a day. I used my #brushpen combo of the cheap M&G refillable brush pen with water, plus the #pentelpocketbrushpen . I'd either load up the water brush with a little ink for the grey areas, or put down a few dark base strokes with the Pentel and use the water-loaded M&G to push and pull the ink around. I went back with just the Pentel to add detail to the heavily contrasting areas once the ink had dried sufficiently. I managed to get a couple of 'profile' sketches done, but got into things and decided to add in some scenery and bystanders too. I finished the last half hour with speed-sketching passersby, trying to get the ink onto the paper as quickly but faithfully as possible at my current level. With exercises like this, I feel like I can build my intuition and the results can either be crap or surprisingly nice. I'll be doing more stuff like this in the future. Exercise 20 (draw a crowd -no pun intended) will either happen later tonight, or maybe tomorrow if I can't find a suitable gathering of dancing aunties in time. You will need: -Sketchbook -Pens, Pencils, Charcoal etc. (A mark-making tool of some description) -Humans in profile view Spend some time drawing people in profile, try to capture their posture and body language. It can express their emotional state.
