On paper, the Cult of the Tree has disbanded, when in reality, Jaakko's twin brother, Ilmo, has been leading the remaining members in trying to protect the area around Cauldron Lake, with Rose Marigold as his new right-hand woman.

Because the Oldest House in New York City is still technically under lockdown, dealing with the remaining Hiss threat, the Lake House research facility on Cauldron Lake has technically been without leadership for a year after the Doctors Marmont were killed after becoming Taken. Kiran Estevez and another field agent, Ollie Philips, return to Bright Falls to keep an eye on things.

Alan Wake still lives in the Lighthouse Trailer Park across from Coffee World in Watery, preparing to go back into Cauldron Lake to find his wife, Alice, in the Dark Place.
