i was about to look into some new fcs for ts bael but

i appear from out of the woodwork --- bael doesn’t cut his hair the entire timeskip bc byleth always used to do it for him and now she’s “ dead ” / on the opposing side.

        “ ah, bernadetta ... ” brows furrow, frown pulling a bit tighter. bael tries to not be so obvious with his emotions, however, they’re just as apparent as the fact that he is not, indeed, his sister. byleth has always had a far better command of such things. needless to say, the mention of bernadetta’s reaction to yuri’s appearance troubles the professor and it takes everything to not let loose the sigh that’s steadily built up in his chest. “ i'll try and put in a good word, but bernadetta will need to see things for herself. it takes time for her to grow accustomed to everyone. some more than others. ”

               “ how are you holding up? ” comes gentle question as she enters the room almost silently, more like a gust of wind than a person. she shrugs off her coat and haphazardly tossed it onto his desk chair, before seating herself on his bed with a yawn. “ we haven’t had a chance to talk since we got here…whenever i think i have a moment to myself, hanneman or seteth pull me every which way… ” the face she made was enough to get the point across that she really didn’t enjoy all this attention — not that bael would have to be told that.

               her expression quickly shifts to a slight smile when her gaze lands back on her brother, perhaps the only person in the world who has seen her smile. it unnerved people sometimes, how in sync they were, how they could discern each other’s thoughts and feelings with little more than a glance. even their father was baffled from time to time, though he rarely showed it. sometimes she wondered if they were completely separate entities.

               “ the black eagle students seem nice. i only spoke to edelgard for a few moments, but she is certainly the perfect princess. ”

        were he not used to his sister’s silence, bael might’ve jumped out of his skin. but, no, byleth’s way of keeping quiet did little to deter the soft, secure presence she had about her. such soundlessness is never devoid of comfort; bael has known stifling silences. by the time that byleth had taken a seat at the edge of the bed, several papers had accumulated around bael in a half circle, the one that currently held his attention situated on crisscrossed legs. i really shouldn’t have asked for a small paragraph of introduction and what each student’s weapon of choice was and why. some wrote responses as long as dissertations. he’s looking at you, ferdinand.

        “ from your expression, i have a feeling my time has been much easier so far, ” he murmurs at first, hardly looking up. once he does, however, eyes crinkle above the curling of his own lips. it’s true that she’s been met with far more attention, everyone seems to be more drawn to byleth, even rhea, than the one that probably had been offered a position simply due to being jeralt’s son. thankfully, bael doesn’t have much issue with that. as long as he and byleth were in this together, he could never really complain.

        “ i’m doing fine. i’ve only really had to deal with caspar and ferdinand’s shouting, so i’m more worried about you and all that attention. how are the blue lions ? ”

        “ ... something you need ? ” bael looks up from his desk, noticing andromeda’s presence before it. how long they’ve been standing there, he isn’t certain --- but now that he has, they have his undivided attention.
