i could literally make a giant chart of how every single event in harry potter books 5-7 parallels books 1-3 with book 4 (specifically, cedric’s death) as the turning point but i won’t do that but i could.

the cool thing about having an idiot alt right supporting brother is when he gets mad over dumb shit my sister and i go “It’s concerning how such a small thing triggers such a strong reaction from you.” in the family groupchat and he’ll see the word “trigger” in relation to him and go fucking nuclear
the downside about having such a dipshit brother is literally every thing else about him

Mermaid Melanin
Anonymous said to @ask-drferox: Would mermaids need more or less melanin than a human at a comparable latitude? Or would this depend more on how deep they travel underwater? Yes this is a very topical ask, I know.
Mermaids, as a completely fictional species with many variants, could be whatever colour you like. Personally I like the idea of darker dorsally and paler ventrally, as many aquatic species have, but if we’re talking strictly in the context of, let’s say, a live action mermaid film, then if you want to sprinkle realism into this somehow for these half-human-half-fish then it would likely depend on the depths they inhabit and their diet.
Melanin production is increased with UV exposure, and UV light is partially blocked by water, with less and less UV penetrating deeper water. So the mermaids with the palest skin are likely lurking in the deepest water where UV light isn’t a concern. They may still have melanin for camouflage patterns, but they’re not exactly going to get a tan if they’re always deep, deep under water.
If your mermaids are frequently breaching the surface, then more melanin is likely an advantage because UV will still cause damage, and it’s reflected from the water’s surface so this mermaid may be getting a double dose.
Melanin is also thought to play a role in reducing folate degradation by UV light in the skin. This might actually make increased skin melanin an advantage for mermaids that go anywhere near the surface, as compared to a terrestrial diet, they are probably consuming less folate.
If you have mermaids eating a lot of fish, and they probably are, compared to a terrestrial diet with more grain-based foods in it, they are probably consuming less folate than you or I would be. At the same time, they can’t really afford the consequences of a folate deficiency causing anaemia, as they’re swimming all the time. Even if these mermaids don’t carry a pregnancy like humans do, they still need a decent amount of folate, and a fish-heavy diet will be relatively lower in it. So any biological strategy they can employ to prevent loss of folate is probably worthwhile, and increased skin melanin is a viable option.
There is a lot of sun out on the ocean. The paler the mermaid, the more likely is it a deep sea dweller and not necessarily a good happily-ever-after candidate.
As for the topical nature of this ask…

There’s no reason an actress like this couldn’t play Ariel, the little mermaid. That hair works really well, just add the flower and we’re done.
But at it’s core, the story of The Little Mermaid was about a young woman who wanted desperately to be accepted as a ‘part of that world’. So in light of all this apparent backlash against her, casting a POC as Ariel seems somewhat fitting.

Us theory
I think that US has a really cool idea that the only reason the family survived is due to their connection to the tethered. I think the reason the kids were able to kill and connect to their tethered was because of it being in their blood. This is why I think Jason and Ploto have such a strong connection because what’s the difference between them? Both half tethered half human.
