How to Install S & S Windows Applications on a MAC Computer Using Wineskin

I have decided today to update my SO to MacOS Mojave to find how wineskin works on this new OS and I found that Wineskin is not working propperly. You can create wrappers, use winetricks and install games but when you use it from a period of 15 minutes it blocks your operative system and you can't open any app and also you can't turn off your Mac. Wineskin provides free Windows emulation support to run S & S applications on a MAC.

What is Wineskin?

Wineskin is a tool used to make ports of Windows software to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (or later). The ports are in the form of normal Mac application bundle wrappers. It works like a wrapper around the Windows software, and you can share just the wrappers if you choose (that is the strategy used here). Best of all, it’s free and does not require installation of the Windows OS!

Installation Instructions

Click on the Wineskin download link. The download will start automatically and show up in your downloads tool bar at the bottom of your browser screen as Wineskin Winery.app V…zip. When the download has completed, double click it to open it in a new finder window.

Once the app has created a new desktop icon, which will show up in the same finder window as your download, double click on the Wineskin Winery icon.

This will bring up a security window, asking if you would like to open the Wineskin Winery application which was downloaded from the Internet (even though it is from an unidentified developer), select Open.

Once the app is installed, it will automatically open. Select the bottom option that says Create New Blank Wrapper.

Type in the name of the program you are installing (this set of instructions creates a wrapper for the SewArt application. You should replace SewArt with the name of the program you are installing, such as SewWhat-Pro, SewWrite, etc.). Select OK.

Once the wrapper is created, go to the S & S product download page for the program you wish to install (for example, click Shop->SewArt to access the SewArt webpage). Click the Download (Mac) version button.

This will once again create a download in your browser. When the download has finished, if your settings automatically open the downloaded app, you will receive an alert saying your computer cannot open the application. Select OK.

Single click your Downloads folder (in your dock at the bottom of your screen).

Right click (two finger tap on your mouse pad) the install app

This will pop up a menu. Hover over the Open With option. Select the Other… option.

In the window that pops up, type in the Search box the name of the wrapper you created in Step 6 (SewArt in this case).

Double click the wrapper you created in Step 6 (SewArt in this case)

If your security preferences do not allow for unidentified developers, click OK on the security alert that pops up. If no security alert pops up, continue to the next step.

Right click on the install app, and select the Open With then the SewArt option (this will be based on the name of the wrapper you created in Step 6).

Select Open in the security alert that pops up.

The SewArt installer will now open. Select Yes.

Read the Terms and Conditions, and select Yes to agree and continue with the install.

Select Close once the install has completed.

Select OK when the alert box pops up saying the program has been installed.

Right click on the new icon created on your desktop (.ink) and select Open with then Other…

Search again for the wrapper you created in Step 6

Important: To skip this step in the future, select the box next to the option Always Open With.

Select the wrapper you created in Step 6.

The program (SewArt in this case) will now open, and you can use it just like you would on a Windows computer!

Use the MAC Download button on the product page to download the zipped S & S application Wineskin Wrapper to the Download folder on your MAC. For example, if you are installing SewWhat-Pro, the zipped wrapper file will be named Wineskin-SewWhat-Pro.app.zip. Unzip it and run it to install the product. You may be prompted that “SewWhat-Pro (or whatever application you are installing) is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?” Select “Open” to continue with the installation. You may have to change your security settings to allow the file to run, as explained here. The Wineskin programs will have a wine colored icon next to the file name after they are installed (see figure below).

Once the installation is successfully completed and you open the application, the S & S product application registration box will open. You may now choose to continue using the product as a Demo or enter your registration information if you purchased a license.

Unlike the software developed for Windows system, most of the applications installed in Mac OS X generally can be removed with relative ease. If Wineskin Winery is frozen, you can press Cmd +Opt + Esc, select Wineskin Winery in the pop-up windows and click Force Quit to quit this program (this shortcut for force quit works for the application that appears but not for its hidden processes).

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder in Launchpad, and select All Processes on the drop-down menu at the top of the window. Select the process(es) associated with Wineskin Winery in the list, click Quit Process icon in the left corner of the window, and click Quit in the pop-up dialog box (if that doesn’t work, then try Force Quit).

2. Delete Wineskin Winery application using the Trash

First of all, make sure to log into your Mac with an administrator account, or you will be asked for a password when you try to delete something.

Open the Applications folder in the Finder (if it doesn’t appear in the sidebar, go to the Menu Bar, open the “Go” menu, and select Applications in the list), search for Wineskin Winery application by typing its name in the search field, and then drag it to the Trash (in the dock) to begin the uninstall process. Alternatively you can also click on the Wineskin Winery icon/folder and move it to the Trash by pressing Cmd + Del or choosing the File and Move to Trash commands.

For the applications that are installed from the App Store, you can simply go to the Launchpad, search for the application, click and hold its icon with your mouse button (or hold down the Option key), then the icon will wiggle and show the “X” in its left upper corner. 3. Remove all components related to Wineskin Winery in Finder

Though Wineskin Winery has been deleted to the Trash, its lingering files, logs, caches and other miscellaneous contents may stay on the hard disk. Open the Finder, go to the Menu Bar, open the “Go” menu, select the entry:|Go to Folder... and then enter the path of the Application Support folder:~/Library

Search for any files or folders with the program’s name or developer’s name in the ~/Library/Preferences/, ~/Library/Application Support/ and ~/Library/Caches/ folders. Right click on those items and click Move to Trash to delete them.

Meanwhile, search for the following locations to delete associated items:

/Library/Caches/

Besides, there may be some kernel extensions or hidden files that are not obvious to find. In that case, you can do a Google search about the components for Wineskin Winery. Usually kernel extensions are located in in /System/Library/Extensions and end with the extension .kext, while hidden files are mostly located in your home folder. You can use Terminal (inside Applications/Utilities) to list the contents of the directory in question and delete the offending item.

4. Empty the Trash to fully remove Wineskin Winery

If you are determined to delete Wineskin Winery permanently, the last thing you need to do is emptying the Trash. To completely empty your trash can, you can right click on the Trash in the dock and choose Empty Trash, or simply choose Empty Trash under the Finder menu (Notice: you can not undo this act, so make sure that you haven’t mistakenly deleted anything before doing this act. If you change your mind, before emptying the Trash, you can right click on the items in the Trash and choose Put Back in the list). In case you cannot empty the Trash, reboot your Mac.

Usually when you plug in a new device through USB you hear Windows 'ding' as it detects the hardware. Are you getting that sound as you plug and unplug the USB cable? I have also had issues with Windows 7 and USB 3.0 ports. USB 3 is not natively supported in Win7 so the right drivers are critical. I've had machines that would see my device, but when I unplug it locks up the USB port. So plugging and unplugging had no effect. I had to reboot to get it to see the connection. I moved my machines to Win10 where USB 3 is natively supported and those issues went away. Anyway....a couple suggestions.

Try a different USB port. Avoid the USB 3.0 ports. Typically these are either blue or they are labeled as 'SS' for SuperSpeed. At least that's how Dell labels them.

Delete your USB drivers from the Windows Device Manager. Go into the Device Manager and Universal System Bus Controllers and uninstall (don't delete files) any Intel or other branded drivers. Don't worry about the 'generic' or 'Root Hub', as they will delete automatically. After uninstalling right-click and select 'Scan for hardware changes' and those devices will all reinstall.

Delete the Rockwell Automation USB CIP Device from the Device Manager. Plug the cable back in and it should reinstall.

Do a Windows Update. New USB drivers may be available. If for some reason you did not have the proper USB CIP driver, Windows Update will get it for you.

The default firmware

The short readme text gives a warning that the board should not be used without the antenna because that might damage the LoRa chip.

After plugging in the USB cable there is a splash screen with the company logo and after that there is one line text claiming that the board is happily sending LoRa packets. At least the board seems to be working. Time to get some example sketches running.

Installing the USB driver

After connecting the board to an USB port the Windows 10 device manager doesn’t show any serial ports. Looks like I have to install the driver manually. The description of the board claims it uses a CP2102 USB to serial converter. The driver is available for download a Silicon Labs. I hope it is a genuine chip or at least the driver accepts it.

I had to use the driver Windows 7/8/8.1/10 (v6.7.5) to get a functioning COM port. The universal driver sounded better but Windows complained about something in the .inf file.

Another interesting thing is that using an USB hub connected to a docking station doesn’t work. When using an USB port from the Laptop itself Windows recognizes the device and the COM port was available.

Looking in the Arduino directory would have been easier. There is a a driver included for the CP2102 in the driver directory. 😉

Running a demo sketch

The board support package include a whole set of examples. The File menu of the Arduino IDE has an Examples menu item where you can find a lot of examples including some for LoRa receiving and sending packets. Here is a very simple one which doesn’t use the display but prints the information using the serial port.

LoRa.begin expects two parameters. I have found some other examples where the PABOOST parameter wasn’t included. This might be useful to keep in mind that this seems to have changed recently.

On Board Flash Size

The question about the on board flash size is also answered. When looking at the Arduino compile log, we can see that it is compiled for a 4 MByte flash, so the assumption that it is just 32 MBit was correct.

Conclusion

This board is really nice and it is quite easy to get started with LoRa. I should have ordered two of them, but I wasn’t sure how well this board actually was. Up to now it is really worth the money!

The NFC mobile-payment application is currently in trials in the United States, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands and a few other countries, with transportation ticketing as a primary use (think SpeedPass on a cell phone). The idea is that you just touch your phone to an NFC reader (or bring it to within a few centimeters), and it acts just like the credit card or debit card you use right now. A mobile-payment-enabled phone is associated with a bank or credit-card company just like it's associated with a phone-service provider. The technology is similar to the RFID (radio frequency identification) transmitters used in contactless credit cards (see How Blink Technology Works), except that NFC chips allow for two-way communication instead of only one way, which is supposed to make for a more secure payment method.

The technology behind NFC, like RFID, uses inductive coupling to transfer data. Induction occurs when a wire (or any other conductor of electricity) passes through a magnetic field, generating an electric current in the wire. It's similar to the principal of electromagnetism -- that passing an electric current through a coil of wire will generate a magnetic field -- only in reverse. An NFC chip has a coil of wire built into it, much like an RFID chip. When an NFC-equipped cell phone gets to within a few centimeters of an NFC-equipped payment station, which is generating a magnetic field and also has a coil of wire inside, an electric current jumps between the two coils of wire, signaling The pay station will then say, for instance, 'Okay, I'll wait,' and the devices will keep the connection open until the phone approves the transaction and sends the data.

Nokia revealed the first fully integrated NFC phone, the Nokia 6131 NFC, at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. At CES, Nokia was in a perfect position to show off what some in the industry consider to be the myriad other applications for an NFC phone -- like sucking data off an NFC-equipped business card and downloading data from an NFC-equipped kiosk. The NFC chip is embedded underneath the cover of the phone. According to the NFC forum, you could also use an NFC phone to unlock the door to your house and synch your phone calendar with your PC calendar.

The 6131 NFC is in trials in New York City as of January 2007. Nokia says it should available to consumers by March. No word yet on which stores or transportation venues will be equipped with the standardized NFC readers.
