Her cravings were getting weird, and even heavier than she cared to admit, but when Hunter returned home from the supply run, she pulled herself off the couch and joined him at the counter, looking at him with the softest glowing smile she could muster up. Penelope leaned into him and pecked a kiss on his cheek. “Thank you for all of this. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” She paused a moment, as she started digging into the bags. “It’s not all that bad. Come on, you’ve never wanted to try a pickle in nutella?”

Hunter started to empty one of the bags, placing jars and containers on the counter. A small smile came across his features as she kissed his cheek, happy to oblige even if his stomach didn’t understand how she could eat both together. “You’d have to go to the store yourself, and that would be a tragedy. Mostly on your wallet with all the food you might buy.” He joked, looking over the pickles and nutella. He liked the latter, but not in the way she indulged in. “Nope, definitely not. I hate pickles, they’re disgusting. Why would I want to ruin something as perfect as nutella with a pickle?”

“You wouldn’t know if you were interrupting anything even if it hit you in the face.” She stated rather cruelly to her brother, finding her busy schedule kept her from seeing him most days—or maybe that was just her own conscience decision, not making any time for him anymore. “What do I owe this surprise visit to?”

“Well, then this will only take a few minutes.” He retorted, any hopes of this going over smoothly deteriorating rather quickly. Hunter stepped farther into the room, not bothering to take a seat if this was going to be another fight. He’d rather be ready to get out of there if necessary. “I had some news for you, good news for a change. You’re going to be an aunt.”

The random shopping trip was not an easy one, finding all of the food Penelope asked for at multiple stores. He set the bags down, giving her a cautious look. “I don’t know how you’re going to eat this at the same time. Not sure if I should be concerned or not, but I’ll be in the other room so I don’t throw up.”

No matter the falling out he had with Holly, he wanted to tell her everything happening between him and Penelope. She’d still be their aunt, and he hoped to repair some part of their relationship to have her around. He’d left work a little early, hoping to catch her at the office still in the hopes a public meeting would at least keep any arguments to a minimum. “Knock, knock. I hope I’m not interrupting anything.”

“No excuses sounds like you’re gonna be wearing a whole lot of nothing very soon.” She easily found a spot among the celebration crowd to dance in as Hunter brought her in close, letting their bodies keep each other’s form. “We’re gonna be awesome either way. And, I know it’s like really soon, but I don’t think it’s ever too early to start thinking of names we like.” She looked to him with a grin growing. “You’re part man, part beast, right? Kind of hard to contain if you ask me.”

“Only if it includes you wearing a whole lot of nothing soon after,” he chuckled, enjoying the small area they carved out for themselves among the crowd. “Names, huh?” Hunter paused for a moment. “Does your family have any sort of tradition with names in your family?” His hand ran over her form as he held her close, “It’s going to take a lot more than drinks for me to become less of a beast.”

“That’s pretty cool, I’ve moved a lot and this is the first time I been to a town that really does community events. They must take pretty good care of their people here.” She couldn’t find shit on the town, she was going off the letter her brother left behind and far as she knew, it was a sanctuary. That seemed to be adding up so far. “Yeah, I moved here about a week ago. My brother moved out here a few months back and I moved to be closer to him.” She only wish it was that easy, his trail ended here so until she got a lead this town would be home. And the best way to learn anything in town was the people. And he seemed like a good kid. “That’s cool, what’s her name? I’ll look for it in the paper.” She offered politely before extending her hand. “I’m Isidora, by the way.”  

“They do try their best.” If anything, to try and make up for the shit things that seemed to happen as of late. Yet through it all, he showed up to them anyways, this one more out of wanting to be near Penelope than anything. “I’m sure he’s excited to have you in town. There’s nothing like a family bond.” Even too his own ears it sounds a little sarcastic, the falling out with his sister fresh in his mind. He loved her, but Hunter refused to follow down the same path she foraged for herself. “Penelope. It’ll be front page tomorrow certainly.” His hand shook the one held out to him, a small smile coming across his features. “Hunter, it’s nice to meet you.”

“I definitely want to see you in that outfit, but I’m trying to at least make some excuse for it. Your sexiness is what got us here in the first place.” She cooed back into his ear, before slowly dragging him to the dance floor, hoping to just sway back and forth with the music. “Raddest parents? Really? I think we’re losing our cool cred daily.” A heat rushed to her cheeks easily at his kiss. “Yeah, I figured that was probably the night, though nothing lines up because of your damn wolf genes. And here I thought wolf Hunter wasn’t out to play that night.”

“When are you going to realize we don’t need an excuse? You want the outfit, I’ll break it out. You might be right though, except it’s your fault I can’t keep my hands off of you.” Hunter followed her to the dance floor, chuckling. “Okay, maybe not the raddest, but we will no doubt embarass them any chance we get.” He shrugged, “I can’t help it. You got me drunk and I became an animal.” Hunter growled, wrapping his arms around her to bring her in close.

“Did you become my genie all of a sudden? You know, you could probably pull it off, if you wear what you wore for Halloween.” Penelope grinned back as she let their moment remain happy again. “We made this happen together, we made a baby, together! This is just…life, right? So long as you’re by my side, we can do this.” Her lips pursed lightly at his words, a soft chuckle reigning through. “Yes, of course. If I’m wrong, then you’ll be able to explain to our son why I was so disappointed in not getting a girl. But, she’s growing fast, I’m sure an ultrasound could tell us in a couple of months.”

“Are you sure you don’t just want to see me in that outfit? Because I can easily bring it out and give you a show to ease some stress too.” His head nodded, feeling giddy about the life they were creating together. Not only with the baby, but their life together as well. “I’m convinced we can get through anything. And this baby is going to have the raddest parents on the planet.” Hunter excitedly kissed her cheek. “The glory of winning is upon us. Well, whenever it’s time to find out but it could be faster than human pregnancies. Clearly with you already showing, when I’m assuming we have the potluck to blame.”

“A bath might not be such a bad idea after this, or at least a nice foot scrub.” She paused as she looked to him, mischievous grin growing. “Wouldn’t mind one of those famous back massages either. I’m sure those will come in handy when I get bigger.” Penelope let a hand rest between them on her stomach, adding, “I just have a really good feeling, call it a maternal instinct? Isn’t that what everybody says?”

“Your wish is my command. Anything you want to help you relax, I will make it happen. This is partially my fault, but you get the brunt of it all. I’ll do whatever I can to make the next eight seven months as smooth as possible.” His eyes looked down at her hand once more, cocking his head to the side. “Do I get to say I told you so if your maternal instinct is incorrect and it’s a boy?”

“I don’t know what I’m gonna do when I get stressed out. It was my go-to choice for being able to…relax, and leave the world behind.” Penelope shrugged off-handedly, wondering just how she was going to cope now. “Thank you Hunter. That does mean a lot. We can’t be causing harm to our baby when she’s not even here yet. What kind of parents would we be?”

“We can find something else. Relaxing baths. I don’t know if you know this but I give a mean back massage.” He chuckled lightly, his head tilting to the side. “She? What makes you think it’s going to be a girl?”

“I love you.” Pulling Hunter into a hug, Penelope let her arms wrap around his neck with a simple tug at him to get closer as she realized this was their life, and their future, and it meant more to her than anything else. “I can’t promise anything Hun. I think I’m already a bit emotional.” She chuckled softly as she held him, before finally pulling her head up to look at him. “I don’t think I could ask that of you. I don’t even know if weed has any effect on a pregnancy, so I’ll probably stop, but you don’t have to.”

“I love you too.” He whispered, kissing her cheek as she pulled him into a hug. All of this was scary, as much as he tried to be calm for the both of them. He’d be her rock as much as she needed him. “Okay, well then no more comments about what you look like other than that you’re beautiful, and always will be.” He lightly pushed a piece of her hair behind her ear, a soft expression on his face. “I’ll at least stop doing it around you, just in case. I don’t want to take any chances, and it’s not fair to you to taunt you with it when you’re unable to do it.”

Her hands quickly went to her midsection, trying hard to suck it all in with no such luck, and instead used her hands to shield his glance. “I’m excited. And so fucking scared at the same time.” She was less worried about the weight, and more worried about the whole bringing new life into the world, something she wasn’t even sure was feasible. Rolling her eyes back playfully, she added, “A beached seal? Because that makes it so much better. What are you going to do when my hormones are crazy our of whack and I start crying because you just called me a seal?”

His eyes came back to hers as she blocked his glance, giving her a reassuring smile. “Penelope, we’ll figure this out. I’m terrified too, but there’s no one else I’d want to figure life out with.” This may have been an accident, but one he would happily endure and figure out with her. She was his family now, and he wouldn’t start by running away from this. “Well, I wouldn’t be calling you a seal at that point. I may be dumb at times, but I’m staying as far away from making you cry as possible. Does this mean I need to stop smoking now?”

Isidora wanted to mingle, get out there and maybe make a friend, but she couldn’t seem to find a good reason to. Being social was easier when she was looking for info for a hunt and not for her own life. “They do this kind of thing a lot around here?” she raised an eyebrow at the question, she’d never heard of such a thing. It was a small town, maybe that was the normal. “Yeah, its good to get dressed up and have some fun.” She looked over to the kid, “Are you new in town too or something? I don’t see a lot of kids hanging back.”

“Formal?” Hunter shook his head, “no, nothing like this. The town likes to throw events to bring everyone together, that’s a typical thing.” He left out the part about something bad happening in the last year, but he hoped with the new year maybe it would end. Before the fair, things were pretty chill around town. “I’ve been here for a few years with my sister. You’re new?” He asked politely, too busy with Penelope to actually get to know anyone as of late. “My girlfriend is covering the Celebration for the paper, so I figured I’d have a couple of drinks before meeting up with her again.”

“I’m good, but thanks.” She offered a friendly smile as she declined their offer. She wasn’t much for small talk, but given she was relatively new in town it wasn’t such an awful thing. “So, are you having a good time? I’ve never been one of these things. Its more lively than I expected.”

Hunter shrugged, keeping the drink for himself. He wanted to give Penelope some space while she worked instead of distracting her. “I am yeah. I haven’t been to too many, at least nothing this fancy. But it’s nice seeing everyone dressed up and having a good time.”

While it definitely had been fitting for the recent symptoms, Penelope was mildly surprised along with Hunter at the bump, but found herself growing more excited about the prospect of the future with every glance she shared with Hunter. As they took a moment to themselves, she only chuckled while letting her arms wrap around his neck with ease. “Just about a million times already.” Her whispers couldn’t be bothered as she looked at him. “But once more couldn’t hurt with feeling like a beached whale all of a sudden.”

Hunter scoffed, looking down at her stomach. “You’re not a beached whale. This means there’s more of you to love, and love on. Plus, another life we get to love and take care of that’s all ours.” He grinned, somehow calm about the situation when he easily could be freaking out. “Plus, you haven’t reached whale status quite yet. A seal might be a better metaphor.”

The initial surprise from the baby bump had worn off, only leaving even more love for her than he had before. His arm slipped around her waist, pulling her in close. “Have I told you tonight how sexy you look?” He whispered into her ear, a grin growing on his face.
