In Ireland, the Jacobs brand name is owned by Valeo Foods – a spokesperson for the company told DailyEdge.ie that the recipe had not been changed.

However, in the UK the Jacobs name is owned by United Biscuits, and it’s entirely possible that those crackers could be the source of the unrest we see here.

In days gone by, fund raising took the form of ‘bring and buy’ sales, cake baking, coffee mornings and the like. All very well for people with that kind of time on their hands.

Fund raising these days can often take the form of physical challenge like running a certain distance, hurling yourself out of a fully working aircraft, canoeing down rapids, bungee jumping and all kinds of mind boggling activities for the fit and adventurous. These activities include planning, timing and a large overhead to cover costs.

We wanted to raise funds quickly (and safely) at Redhound for a specific animal charity and didn’t want to muck around organising, filling in paperwork and devoting much of our spare time to it and found the solution solution in the form of the Cream Cracker Challenge.

There is nothing new about it but it is a lot of fun requiring nothing more than a packet of crackers and a watch to time people.

The challenge is to consume and swallow a whole cream cracker within 60 seconds without the use of a drink during that minute. Participants may not break the cracker up with their hands during this time. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Most people would say they can do it but the reality is a bit different.

Participants pledge money for each challenge (a few pounds) and buy the cracker for £1. They will have their stake returned if they win along with a signed certificate (it took 5 minutes to run up and print off) or some other form of recognition if they succeed. If they don’t succeed, the money goes directly to charity along with the money for each cracker. However, many people unaware of the difficulty will say they can eat several in a minute……let them try!

The hysteria created by watching someone seriously trying the challenge is fantastic. Techniques get very serious, some will push the whole thing in their mouth and chew furiously (until they grind to a halt within 30 seconds), some will very quickly nibble away at it like a demented rat. There are a variety of methods, all rather hilarious. The only thing you need to watch for is if a participant corpses and showers everyone within 2-3 meters with crumbs in the process. It’s infectious and everyone will want to have a go.

It’s a gift to smart phones, videos and pictures of attempts can circulate the internet or place of work. In the past, I have even seen inter-branch challenges within large organisations. You can do it at work, with a few friends or when you are out and about all for the cost of one or two packets of crackers.

It’s quick and easy to organise, its more entertaining than a bring and buy, it’s less dangerous than a bungie jump and it’s very cheap. One packet can raise around £75 but be aware that time files if you’re doing it on a lunch break so you may have to form several groups or run the event over several days.

MG or Morris Garages first officially appeared in the Philippines back in 2015. But as of 2018, The Covenant Car Company Incorporated (TCCI), the same firm behind the Chevrolet brand here, has taken up the position of being MG’s official distributor here in the country.

MG isn’t by any means a new or even young car company. This is immediately apparent when upon visiting one of their dealerships here. You would notice the text below the MG logo which says “Since 1924.”

Once called MG Car Company Limited, the company has produced very interesting vehicles such as the very successful T-Series and the MGF roadster under the Rover Group. As of 2005 however, the Nanjing Automobile Group has since acquired the British car company and all its assets and as such has enjoyed a much larger availability worldwide.

Nanjing itself merged with the SAIC Group in 2008. MG has since sold cars in Australia, Chile, China, Thailand, the United Kingdom and, of course, the Philippines.

For a crossover with its price, the five-door, five-seater MG ZS 2019 is a good car to look at. It does not have as much road presence as, say, Mazda CX-5 but otherwise it is much larger looking than the more expensive Ford Ecosport. But let us talk more about the ZS’s price later.

Suffice to say, the 2019 MG ZS exterior looks much closer to the aforementioned because of its equally sizable grille at the front and probably the overall profile of the vehicle as well. The affordable crossover measures 4,314 mm in length, 1,809 mm in width, and is 1,648 mm in height. It has a long 2,585-mm wheelbase and weighs 1,258 kilograms. Surprisingly enough, the Ecosport is actually much longer but the MG ZS is a little bit wider.

3. MG ZS 2019 Philippines: Interior Review

Before talking about anything else, one surprising feature of the 2019 MG ZS interior is that it comes with a panoramic sunroof which many of its competitors have yet to provide. Now moving on to the interior design itself, everything looks fine and the buttons and controls are fairly ergonomically positioned - within easy reach.

The pedals are placed just right, and everything within the MG ZS is simple and logical. What we’re not a big fan of however is that MG decided to use fake carbon fiber which is extremely prominent around the infotainment system and around the shifter. Another nitpick we simply cannot ignore are the drab color choices for the MG ZS’s interior.

Upon closer inspection of the MG ZS infotainment system, it is surprisingly good with just a little latency compared to many used in other cars. Its homepage thankfully adds much-needed life and color inside the simple cabin. The infotainment system of the MG ZS can play FM/AM radio, has Bluetooth connectivity, and has USB and AUX ports which are all made audible by fairly decent front and rear speakers.

In terms of seating, MG claims that the ZS crossover can comfortably seat five. We would disagree with that point however and would claim that it is better suited to four, owing to the bulging center of the rear passenger bench. As for knee space and headroom, we have no complaints about.

Other comfort features that come with the MG ZS interior are air-conditioning, power windows, automatic climate control, a heater, fold-down seats which you can also adjust manually, accessory power outlets, and a power trunk opener which opens up to fair-sized boot.

4. MG ZS 2019 Philippines: Specs & Engine

The engine that powers the 2019 MG ZS crossover is a 1.5-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine which produces a decent 118hp and 150Nm of torque. That’s competitive compared to other existing crossovers in the market.

The engine, however, is a bit rough sounding but otherwise runs well with enough power and economy for a crossover within its price range. Peak power for the MG ZS is achieved by revving the engine high at about 6,000 rpm, so that’s one thing that needs to be improved.

The current engine, however, is a good choice as there is also an MG ZS 1.0-liter turbocharged engine available in other markets which sources say underperforms and is slower than the 1.5 one available here in the Philippines.

The MG ZS 2019 can come with a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic. The manual in question feels light and responsive. But when you’re running on the highway, the five-speed may be inadequate, and a six-speed would’ve been better for better highway gas economy. Otherwise, though it’s a good tranny all around.

The suspension overall is comfortable and is on the soft side as one would expect from a crossover; comfortable and promising a good ride over minor bumps on the road. The other side of this is that the MG ZS’s soft suspension causes a bit of roll. Furthermore, when it comes to the steering, feedback is lacking.

Despite those gripes, the MG ZS is a comfortable ride and driving it down a typical road in the city feels okay. It doesn’t stand out by any means in this regard but it’s good for a vehicle of its price.

They’re far too complextools, drawing your focus from writing to things that are irrelevantat the moment of writing (like formatting and layout). The documentsfeel fragile (“move this thing here and your whole layout breaks andyou’ll spend an hour fixing it”). The document format is unstable:have you ever tried to open a .doc file created with some otherversion of Word than the one that you currently happen to use? Howabout opening a 10-year old document? There’s no way to easily see thedifferences between several versions of a document—like you can withversion control / diff tools that programmers use—and so on.

LaTeX is great for writing a scientific article or a book. But formost everyday purposes it’s way overkill: writing a letter or writinga book are kind of different things. And the syntax is… oh,well. You can do anything with it—provided that you can! I can’t, andbesides, I would rather concentrate on writing. Separating content andpresentation is a beautiful idea, in principle, but since people(including me) care about presentation, they also tend to think interms of presentation. People may say they want a word in cursive whenthey really mean that they want to emphasize it. Html <em> elementis typically (but not necessarily) rendered as italic (cursive)text. But the visual result is the natural way to think about it.

So, could we use a more human input syntax with less ceremony, andstill get LaTeX quality output and the benefits of keeping sourcefiles in plain text? Yes, we can! There are several capable tools forthis. Let’s have a look atMultiMarkdown. It’s a setof Perl scripts that can turnMarkdown formatteddocuments into XHTML, PDF, and some other formats. One human readablesource file, many beautifully typeset output formats. Excellent!

Markdown syntaxis simple and effective. Limited, yes, which can also be a blessing:if you can’t express yourself with simple means, consider refactoringyour thoughts before blaming the tool. The end result could be betterand clearer that way.

You create a (Multi)Markdown formatted document using your favorite text editor.

MultiMarkdown converts that document to a LaTeX document.

pdflatex (part of the LaTeX system) converts that document to a PDF file.

Sounds a bit complicated, but once set up it works smoothly. A little problem isthat MultiMarkdown is really just a bunch of Perl scripts and some templatefiles. Good enough for programmers, but how about the other people? The author’sown pages are somewhat Mac biased, and offer little help for people not usingMac. So, here’s how to actually set up MultiMarkdown in Windows and in UbuntuLinux. It’s indeed worth it.

All right, it (hopefully) works now, but sure you’re not going to surfto command line and type the same commands again and again as a partof your daily workflow? While waiting for someone to invent a bettersolution, we can use the following trick.

Create a desktop shortcut with the following target property:<path_to_your_perl_exe> <path_to_the_mmd_script> %1. For instance,C:strawberryperlbinperl.exeC:Program Filesmultimarkdownbinmmd2PDF.pl %1. Now just drag an.mmd file to be converted and drop it on the shortcut. The output.tex and .pdf files will go into the same directory as the source.mmd file. You need to create separate shortcuts for each outputformat you want to use.

Next, let’s see how to accomplish the same in Ubuntu:

There are Markdown modes forEmacs as well as forVim. First program (C++): Hello World.cpp

This example introduces you to the basic functionality of VS Code by demonstrating how to write a 'hello world' program in C++. Before continuing, make sure you have the 'ms-vscode.cpptools' extension installed.

Initialize the Project

The first step is to create a new project. To do this, load the VS Code program. You should be greeted with the typical welcome screen:

To create the first program, select 'Start' > 'New file' from the welcome screen. This will open a new file window. Go ahead and save the file ('File' > 'Save') into a new directory. You can name the directory anything you want, but this example will call the directory 'VSC_HelloWorld' and the file 'HelloWorld.cpp'.

Now write the actual program (feel free to copy the below text):

Great! You'll also notice that because you've installed the 'ms-vscode.cpptools' extension you also have pretty code-highlighting. Now let's move on to running the code.

Running the Script (basic)

We can run 'HelloWorld.cpp' from within VS Code itself. The simplest way to run such a program is to open the integrated terminal ('View' > 'Integrated Terminal'). This opens a terminal window in the lower portion of the view. From inside this terminal we can navigate to our created directory, build, and execute the script we've written. Here we've used the following commands to compile and run the code:

Notice that we get the expected Hello World! output.

Running the Script (slightly more advanced)

Great, but we can use VS Code directly to build and execute the code as well. For this, we first need to turn the 'VSC_HelloWorld' directory into a workspace. This can be done by:

Opening the Explorer menu (top most item on the vertical menu on the far left)

Select the Open Folder button

Select the 'VSC_HelloWorld' directory we've been working in. Note: If you open a directory within VS Code (using 'File' > 'Open...' for example) you will already be in a workspace.

The Explorer menu now displays the contents of the directory.

Next we want to define the actual tasks which we want VS Code to run. To do this, select 'Tasks' > 'Configure Default Build Task'. In the drop down menu, select 'Other'. This opens a new file called 'tasks.json' which contains some default values for a task. We need to change these values. Update this file to contain the following and save it:

Note that the above also creates a hidden .vscode directory within our working directory. This is where VS Code puts configuration files including any project specific settings files. You can find out more about Taskshere.

In the above example, $(workspaceRoot) references the top level directory of our workspace, which is our 'VSC_HelloWorld' directory. Now, to build the project from inside the method select 'Tasks' > 'Run Build Task...' and select our created 'build' task and 'Continue without scanning the task output' from the drop down menus that show up. Then we can run the executable using 'Tasks' > 'Run Task...' and selecting the 'run' task we created. If you have the integrated terminal open, you'll notice that the 'Hello World!' text will be printed there.

It is possible that the terminal may close before you are able to view the output. If this happens you can insert a line of code like this int i; std::cin >> i; just before the return statement at the end of the main() function. You can then end the script by typing any number and pressing <Enter>.

And that's it! You can now start writing and running your C++ scripts from within VS Code.

First Steps (C++): HelloWorld.cpp

The first program one typically writes in any language is the 'hello world' script. This example demonstrates how to write this program and debug it using Visual Studio Code (I'll refer to Visual Studio Code as VS Code from now on).

Create The Project

Step 1 will be to create a new project. This can be done in a number of ways. The first way is directly from the user interface.

Open VS Code program. You will be greeted with the standard welcome screen (note the images are taken while working on a Mac, but they should be similar to your installation):

From the Start menu, select New file. This will open a new editing window where we can begin constructing our script. Go ahead and save this file (you can use the menu File > Save to do this). For this example we will call the file HelloWorld.cpp and place it in a new directory which we will call VSC_HelloWorld/.

Write the program. This should be fairly straight forward, but feel free to copy the following into the file:

Run the Code

Next we want to run the script and check its output. There are a number of ways to do this. The simplest is to open a terminal, and navigate to the directory that we created. You can now compile the script and run it with gcc by typing:

Yay, the program worked! But this isn't really what we want. It would be much better if we could run the program from within VSCode itself. We're in luck though! VSCode has a built in terminal which we can access via the menu 'View' > 'Integrated Terminal'. This will open a terminal in the bottom half of the window from which you can navigate to the VSC_HelloWorld directory and run the above commands.

Typically we do this by executing a Run Task. From the menu select 'Tasks' > 'Run Task...'. You'll notice you get a small popup near the top of the window with an error message (something along the lines of

Installation or Setup

On Windows

Download the Visual Studio Code installer for Windows.

Once it is downloaded, run the installer (VSCodeSetup-version.exe). This will only take a minute.

By default, VS Code is installed under C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft VS Code for a 64-bit machine.

Note: .NET Framework 4.5.2 is required for VS Code. If you are using Windows 7, please make sure .NET Framework 4.5.2 is installed.

Tip: Setup will optionally add Visual Studio Code to your %PATH%, so from the console you can type 'code .' to open VS Code on that folder. You will need to restart your console after the installation for the change to the %PATH% environmental variable to take effect.

On Mac

Download Visual Studio Code for Mac.

Double-click on the downloaded archive to expand the contents.

Drag Visual Studio Code.app to the Applications folder, making it available in the Launchpad.

Add VS Code to your Dock by right-clicking on the icon and choosing Options, Keep in Dock.

You can also run VS Code from the terminal by typing 'code' after adding it to the path:

Launch VS Code.

Open the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P) and type 'shell command' to find the Shell Command: Install 'code' command in PATH command.

Restart the terminal for the new $PATH value to take effect. You'll be able to type 'code .' in any folder to start editing files in that folder.

Note: If you still have the old code alias in your .bash_profile (or equivalent) from an early VS Code version, remove it and replace it by executing the Shell Command: Install 'code' command in PATH command.

On Linux

Debian and Ubuntu based distributions

The easiest way to install for Debian/Ubuntu based distributions is to download and install the .deb package (64-bit) either through the graphical software center if it's available or through the command line with:

Installing the .deb package will automatically install the apt repository and signing key to enable auto-updating using the regular system mechanism. Note that 32-bit and .tar.gz binaries are also available on the download page.

The repository and key can also be installed manually with the following script:

RHEL, Fedora and CentOS based distributions

We currently ship the stable 64-bit VS Code in a yum repository, the following script will install the key and repository:

Installing .rpm package manually The .rpm package (64-bit) can also be manually downloaded and installed, however auto-updating won't work unless the repository above is installed. Once downloaded it can be installed using your package manager, for example with dnf:
