I don't see how this pushes anyone to upgrade. There really isn't any need to 'buckle in'. Users are always free to keep using Windows XP (wat), Windows 7, Windows whatever and any version of office released while in mainstream support. Office 2010, 2013, and Office 2016 work great. Windows 7 works fine. Windows 8 works fine. Windows 10 works fine. Each OS version, just like the competition, have flaws or annoyances. Always have, always will. No need to sit around and whine - if you don't like the OS you use feel free to write your own and see how it goes. Microsoft is designing Office 2019 to work with Windows 10 instead a gimped version that is unstable or missing features in older outdated OS releases. It is really simple.

You start off with a short intro, essentially telling us to defend Hammerhold, which I’m sure is a city in the game. In the first level, you’re also given a brief tutorial, on what to do and how to build towers. Custom configuration options can be defined in a file called CMakeSettings.json at the root of your project folder. The name and schema of this file was intentionally created to match Visual Studio 15 2017's implementation. Here is an example CMakeSettings.json file.

However, configEnviron is a UnmodifiableMap which raises an Exception when put is called. So my question is: how do I modify the additional generation environment for a CMakeSettings.Configuration object? Also, setting these environment variables in CMakeLists.txt is not an option since they are calculated right before build time.

Visual Studio 2017 introduced an new feature: integrating with CMake directly from the IDE itself. You’ll no longer have to worry about running commands separately from CMake and then opening Visual Studio. Everything can be done from Visual Studio.

In this blog post, I’ll describe how to get set up quickly with Visual Studio and CMake.

Note: This blog post assumes you have basic knowledge of CMake and Visual Studio. Note: Ensure you have Visual Studio 2017 installed (CMake comes embedded within Visual Studio).

Setting Up

In order to get started, we first need to create a empty directory (this can anywhere, I generally like to put all my C++ projects in the root C: location like C:CppDev so in this case it would be C:CppDevVsCmakeExample). Then right click on the directory and you should have a option to Open in Visual Studio. Click that and wait for Visual Studio to initialize itself.

Once that is done, Visual Studio will show a empty Solution Explorer. Right click on the directory name and select Add > New Item. Add a CMakeLists.txt. Unfortunately, it seems that Visual Studio does not understand a CMakeLists file if its extension is .cmake. I hope they’ll address that, but it is a minor caveat of mine.

Now let’s type this into CMakeLists.txt file:

This is a sufficiently basic example to get CMake working with Visual Studio. Visual Studio should immediately (when you save the file) invoke CMake and place output in the Output window. If you don’t see it, select CMake from the dropdown.

Visual Studio will internally then call CMake and will pass along the necessary parameters to CMake. A CMakeSettings.json is:

“configurations” – Specifies the list of configurations (targets) for which Visual Studio must compile. Various combinations are possible, the code snippet suffices for basic scenarios.

“name” – The name of the configuration which will appear in Visual Studio’s configuration dropdown.

“generator” – For CMake to know which kind of files to generate.

“buildRoot” – The directory location where CMake must place the generated files. Visual Studio has a bunch of $() macros which can be used (2).

“cmakeCommandArgs” – Extra command line arguments for CMake.

“buildCommandArgs” – Command line arguments for MSBuild.

Now lets add a src directory under the main directory so right click on it and click Add > New Folder and type in src. Right click on src and click Add > New Item and type in main.cpp. Inside main.cpp, type in:

Now usually pressing F7 to build the project won’t work because the target has not been set correctly (it usually defaults to “Current Document”). You’ll have switch it to the “vs_cmake_example.exe” target from the dropdown. Now we can press F7 (and then F5) to compile the project or F5 to compile and run the executable. The Output window should read that the program exited with code 0.

This concludes this blog post on using CMake and Visual Studio in cohesion. This is easily my favorite feature of Visual Studio at the moment and I’m making all my projects use this approach now and switching out old projects from Visual Studio’s .vcxproj format to CMake.

SDK tools version

You must specify the Azure Sphere SDK version for your build by calling the azsphere_configure_tools function to store the value in CMakeLists.txt. This call must precede all other function calls. For example:

azsphere_configure_tools(TOOLS_REVISION '20.04')

Different versions of the Azure Sphere tools may offer different CMake features. For example, the 20.04 release introduced four new CMake functions that were not present in the 20.01 release. The azsphere_configure_tools function specifies the minimum SDK version that is required to build your application.

Target API set

You must specify the target API set for the build by using the azsphere_configure_api function to store the value in CMakeLists.txt. For example:

If you change the target API set during development, you need to delete the CMake cache before you run CMake again.

Target hardware definition

The TARGET_DEFINITION parameter is required. It specifies the name of the hardware definition file your application requires. The TARGET_DIRECTORY parameter lists the directories in which to search for this file. This parameter is optional; if you omit it, CMake looks only in the HardwareDefinitions folder in the SDK installation. To specify multiple folders, enclose each folder name in double quotation marks and use a space to separate folder names, as in the example. In the example, <path> represents the path to the my_app folder on your development machine.

Specify the image package file and any resource files to include when building by calling the azsphere_target_add_image_package function to store the value in CMakeLists.txt. The azsphere_target_add_image_package function and the project to build are required; the resource files are optional.

The following function call creates an image package that contains only the Azure Sphere application:

How to delete the CMake cache when changing configuration files

If you change one of the configuration files, you should delete the CMake cache to ensure that subsequent builds do not fail. Follow this procedure before attempting another build:

For Visual Studio Code builds, run the CMake:Delete Cache and Reconfigure command from the Command Palette.

For command-line (CLI) builds, delete the build directory that you created in an earlier step.

Visual Studio detects changes to the CMake configuration file and auto-deletes the cache.

Convert an existing app to use the CMake functions

1. Design and ergonomics

As we mentioned in the introduction, the a6500 is immediately recognisable due to the flat-topped design it inherited from previous APS-C models. Unlike the A7 III whose electronic viewfinder is found inside a protruding hump at the centre, the a6500’s viewfinder is found on the left side of the body.

Although both cameras feature a prominent grip out front, that of the A7 III is a little larger. However they both feel somewhat small when used with heavy lenses such as the FE 100-400mm.

The viewfinder and larger grip contribute to the extra size and weight of the A7 III, with the official measurements being as follows:

A7 III: 126.9 x 95.6 x 62.7mm; 650g with battery and memory card

a6500: 120 x 66.9 x 53.3mm; 453g with battery and memory card

Looking more closely at the body, it becomes clear that the A7 III has more physical controls and buttons than the a6500.

In addition to having two control dials instead of just one, it also comes with an AF-ON button and an AF joystick on the rear. A closer look at the mode dial on top also reveals that the Panorama shortcut has been replaced by the Slow & Quick mode.

A welcome addition to the A7 III is the dual SD card slot. One slot is standard UHS-I while the other is UHS-II compatible. The a6500 only has a single UHS-I compliant slot, making less capable of higher write speeds than the A7 III.

Found on both models is a 3.5mm microphone terminal but only the A7 III comes with a headphone output.

2. Viewfinder and LCD screen

Both cameras feature an OLED electronic viewfinder but the A7 III’s is larger (0.5” type vs. 0.39” type) and has a higher magnification (0.78x vs. 0.70x). The resolution is the same however (2359k dots).

They both offer 100% field coverage and an eyepoint of 23mm but the a6500’s EVF has a faster refresh rate (120fps vs. 60fps).

Although both cameras have a 3-inch tilting LCD screen with the same 921k-dot resolution, the A7 III offers a little more flexibility in that it tilts up 107 degrees and down 41 degrees instead of 90 degrees and 45 degrees. Usefully, touch sensitivity has been given to both screens, although its only purpose is to change the AF point on-screen.

3. Sensor and processor

Approximately 24.2MP is the shared resolution of both the A7 III and a6500 but this is where the similarities begin and end.

The A7 III is equipped with a brand new BSI full-frame CMOS sensor which allow for better light collection than its predecessor. In fact, Sony claims 15 stops of dynamic range at low sensitivities.

This new sensor, combined with the latest BIONZ X image processor, gives the A7 III lots of flexibility in low light situations. It has a base range of 100 to 51200 ISO and can be expanded down to 50 or up to 204800. Note that the extended values only go up to 102400 for video.

The a6500 has an APS-C sized Exmor CMOS sensor whose maximum native sensitivity is ISO 25600 or 51200 when extended.

Both sensors feature a front-end LSI chip that improves the processing speed capabilities.

They offer 14-bit compressed RAW but only the A7 III has an uncompressed RAW option.

4. Autofocus performance

The A7 III is the latest model to feature Sony’s fast hybrid AF system. It features an impressive 693 phase detection and 425 contrast detection points across 93% of the frame.

The a6500 uses fewer points (425 phase detection and 169 contrast detection). These numbers are still very impressive though, if you consider that in APS-C crop mode, the A7 III is limited to 299 points with FE lenses or 221 points with APS-C lenses.

The minimum focus sensitivity range starts from -3Ev on the A7 III while the a6500 has a minimum -1Ev sensitivity.

The A7 III also comes with the AF Area Recognition mode that allows frequently used focus point settings to be memorised and assigned to custom buttons for fast recall, as well as the AF Track Sensor that allows you to adjust the responsiveness in continuous mode. Both feature EyeAF and Face Detection.

We’ve tested the a6500 intensively and its autofocus system is definitely excellent. The A7 III is one of the best camera you can find and its AF is based on that of the flagship A9, which is the best we’ve tested so far in the mirrorless world.

5. Buffer capacity

A smaller yet potentially significant difference for sports and wildlife photographers is the buffer capacity of the two cameras.

The A7 III can record 177 frames in JPG format and 89 in RAW format in a single burst whereas the a6500 is capable of recording 233 JPGs or 107 RAW frames. Usefully, you can operate the Fn and menu buttons on the A7 III immediately after finishing a continuous burst, even while data writing is in progress.

6. Shutter speed

The A7 III and a6500 both use an electronically controlled, vertical-traverse focal plane type shutter that is supposed to produce fewer vibrations than previous shutters.

The main difference between them is their maximum shutter speed. Whereas the A7 III can reach 1/8000s, the a6500 is capped at 1/4000s. (Note that those speeds don’t change when you switch to the electronic shutter.)

Interestingly, the A7 III also comes with a new flicker reduction mode that minimises flickering in still images caused by fluorescent and other artificial lighting. It is useful at high shutter speeds and for continuous shots but does not work during silent shooting, bulb exposure, or movie recording.

7. Flash

The a6500 makes room for a built-in flash, rated with a guide number of 6GN at ISO 100.

The A7 III doesn’t feature a built-in flash, which is anything but unusual given that other cameras in this series don’t have one either. An external flash unit or a trigger for remote units can be attached to the hotshoe on top.

8. Battery type and life

There used to be one bugbear that pretty much all Sony owners had: the poor battery life of the original NP-FW50 battery.

This is why all third generation A7 cameras – including the A7 III – use the new NP-FZ100 battery. On one full charge, the A7 III can manage an average of 710 photos with the LCD monitor or 610 shots with the EVF, which is approximately 2.2x the capacity of the NP-FW50.

Unfortunately the a6500 uses the older battery and is listed as being able to take around 310 shots with the viewfinder or 350 shots with the LCD. In our experience, you can usually get through a day of moderate shooting on one charge as long as you avoid using power-hungry features such as 4K video or burst shooting.

Usefully, both cameras can be charged via the USB port but neither comes bundled with a separate wall charger.

9. Vertical battery grip

The battery life of the NP-FZ100 is excellent on its own, but those who require even more juice for long shooting sessions will certainly want to consider the VG-C3EM vertical battery grip for the A7 series.

It holds two additional NP-FZ100 batteries and benefits not only from weather-sealing and an extended grip for vertical shooting, but also a second shutter release button and an AF joystick identical to the one on the body. There is also a USB port to charge the grip via the camera body.

Unfortunately Sony didn’t develop an official vertical battery grip for the a6500 but there is the option of a third-party grip from Meike called the MK A6500pro. (Check out our a6500 accessory list to find out more!)

10. Video

Although both cameras are capable of 4K recording up to 30fps and 100Mbps, and Full HD up to 120fps, there are a few small differences worth highlighting.

They both record in 4K with full pixel readout using the entire width of the sensor, which means they collect roughly 6K of data that is then sub-sampled to 4K to increase details and sharpness. However the A7 III applies a 1.2x crop when recording at 30fps, which means it collects slightly less data (5K).

You’ll find the picture profiles for video including S-Log2/3 but only the A7 III has HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma).

Finally, on the A7 III, you can record in both full frame and APS-C format.

Bonus: E-mount Lenses

A final point you might want to consider is the lens catalog for each camera.

Although both use the Sony E-mount, the A7 III is primarily intended for use with full-frame (FE) lenses whereas the a6500, being a smaller body, is physically a better match for the more compact range of APS-C (E) lenses.

At the moment, there are more high quality FE lenses than E lenses, not only from Sony itself but also Zeiss and affordable third-party brands such as Sigma and Tamron to name a few. (In fact, Sigma recently announced nine lenses for the FE system, two of which are brand new and seven of which are existing ART lenses.) For this reason, a full-frame Sony camera may turn out to be a better long-term investment than an APS-C camera like the a6500.

Of course, you can use full-frame lenses on the a6500 and the 1.5x crop factor can come in handy with some of them (the 100-400mm gives you the same field of view as a 150-600mm for instance).

Finally, the phase detection AF points of the two cameras allow them to perform well with DSLR lenses via a compatible adapter, although once again the lightweight design of the a6500 isn’t ideal for this purpose.

Conclusion

In most ways that count, the performance of the Sony A7 III and a6500 is similar, owing mostly to their excellent hybrid AF systems and video capabilities. But given the price difference of around $600, some justification is needed for the additional cost of the full-frame camera.

The first is just that: the fact that it offers a larger sensor, and a brand new one at that. Indeed, it could easily become one of the best on the market if the specifications are any indication.

Second is the A9-inspired AF system and its additional phase detection points, which together provide great results for action-packed genres like sports and wildlife.

Finally there are the smaller details that make the shooting experience more enjoyable, from the larger battery and EVF to the AF joystick and the dual SD card slot.

That said, there is one aspect in the a6500’s favour that can’t be underestimated, and that is compactness, especially if your goal is to move from a heavy camera system to something lighter.

ClickCharts focuses on the essential features of process mapping. You won’t find many frills in this software, but it does a good job of covering the basics and making them easy to access.

Templates

When you launch a new diagram in ClickCharts, you’re prompted to choose a template or start from scratch. There are about 50 different templates available, organized into categories such as electrical wiring diagrams, family trees, Venn diagrams, and organizational charts. The diversity of choices is nice, although it would be good to see a larger number of templates in each category.

Shapes and Connectors

There’s a reasonably wide variety of shapes and connector styles available within ClickCharts. While you can’t design a custom shape, you can import images into your diagrams. This isn’t quite so seamless, but it does work in a pinch.

You can also easily add text to your diagrams and it’s impressively customizable. You can choose from hundreds of fonts, as well as standard formatting options like italics and bolding. Unfortunately, there’s no auto-align function when combining text with shapes, so placing text requires some fine adjustments.

ClickCharts gives you some room to customize the look of your charts by modifying shape styles, but not a ton. The color fill function allows you to alter opacity and create color gradients, and you can layer objects by moving them forwards or backwards in space. However, there are no alignment functions or trackable layers, and you can’t actually modify the line paths of any existing shapes.

Publishing and Sharing

When it comes time to share your completed chart, ClickCharts gives you a few options. You can save the chart as a JPG, PNG, or PDF, or email it directly from the software. There’s even an option to publish your diagram to Twitter.

Both the ClickCharts website and software look out of date. The interface has the look and feel of Microsoft Word circa 1999 rather Adobe Illustrator today. But, the software’s menus are easy to navigate and all of the tools you need are available with just a few clicks.

For example, the full library of shapes and connectors in ClickCharts at hand in a left-side menu at all times when you’re building a new diagram. They’re arranged into categories that correspond with the theme categories, which makes it very easy to find the shapes and arrows that you need for a given project. To place a shape, all you have to do is drag and drop. When adding connectors to your diagram, an auto-snap function makes the process go much more smoothly.

Still, a more modern interface might open up room to add useful tools like object alignment or panels for layering and design. The way the interface is set up, it’s necessary to jump back and forth between menus if you want to place an object and then change its coloration or size. It’s also not all that easy to bulk edit objects that are the same shape, which adds time to the customization process.

Support

ClickCharts provides support by email, although you may find yourself waiting more than a day to get a response from the company. There’s a small help section online, but it’s far from comprehensive. If you do run into issues with the software, your best bet may be to post on the ClickCharts online forum.

ClickCharts sticks to the basics and doesn’t charge much for its product. However, if you need more functionality, there are a few premium alternatives.

Mindomo and Xmind both have much more modern user interfaces and offer more room for customizing your mind maps and charts. Mindomo stands out for offering Gantt charts and a suite of collaboration features, which can be very helpful if you’re working in a team. Expect to pay significantly more for either of these platforms, though: Xmind costs more than double what ClickCharts charges, while Mindomo is only available as a subscription.

The most affordable way — good-old cables

The most affordable way to add smarts to your dumb TV is one that not a lot of people think of straightaway, but it seems rather obvious in hindsight. However, it isn't the easiest or most clutter-free way to do things. At a very low cost — or free, if you already have the necessary cables lying around at home — you can add basic smarts to your TV. The easiest way is to use an HDMI cable to connect your laptop to your TV, and mirror or extend the laptop screen onto the TV this way.

The advantages of this method are that it is extremely affordable, and gives you the full power of your computer on the large screen. If your laptop has an HDMI-out port, all you need is a standard HDMI cable; decent options cost as little as Rs. 300. If you use a laptop that doesn't have an HDMI port — a MacBook Air, for example — then you may have to spend a bit more on the right cables or adapters. Ease of use is another key advantage; you only have to plug the cables in and switch to the right source on your TV to mirror your screen.

With this, your TV is effectively connected to the Internet (through your laptop, of course). You can now use your laptop as a controller and fetch whatever content you want, which can be downloaded, through specific apps or even an Internet browser. The same technique can work with many smartphones as well, assuming that you have the right cables and the device itself allows its display to be mirrored over HDMI.

Cables and adapters are also available for connecting USB Type-C/Thunderbolt or Lightning-compatible devices to TVs through the HDMI port, which offers the ability to connect compatible smartphones and laptops to the TV. The cable you use entirely depends on the device you intend to use as a source, since you'll have to ensure it adheres to the ports you have available and the compatibility of the feature.

The biggest disadvantage of this method is the cable itself; it can be messy, inconvenient and cluttered. In an age where technology is increasingly finding ways to do away with wires, using long cables will come across as a rather low-tech method of doing things. And of course, having your laptop or smartphone screen mirrored on the TV can be inconvenient in different ways — everyone looking at your TV will be able to see your notifications and private conversations. Not to mention you won't be able to control your laptop while sitting on the couch unless you throw in really long cables or additional accessories into the mix.

The most feature-filled way — game consoles

Here's another method that might also seem obvious in hindsight: use a modern gaming console. If you have a Sony Playstation 4 or Microsoft Xbox One (or any of their different variants), you can use these as smart streaming devices. These consoles connect to the internet and have apps available for many of the streaming services. These include Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Spotify, YouTube, Plex, and Twitch, to name a few.

Of course, the biggest advantage of using a gaming console is the gaming, which makes it a much more feature-filled device. If you already have one, we suggest you simply install the right apps on it and make your TV smart, rather than look at any other method to do so. If you're starting from scratch, a game console is a rather expensive way to add smart features to your TV. If you aren't a gamer at all, it might be better for you to have a streaming device or use cables, as mentioned above.

The flip side — when you shouldn't bother making your dumb TV smart

While we've covered the process of explaining what a smart TV is and how you can make a dumb TV smart, it's also worth exploring whether you really even need a smart TV. The answer to this depends on your viewing habits, and what you're looking for from your TV.

Most of the best content today — including popular TV shows, movies and other programming — can be found online, to the point where a lot of new shows and movies are being produced by online streaming services and are released exclusively online. Furthermore, the internet is the best way to access 4K content, with set-top boxes largely limited to full-HD content. Popular shows such as Sacred Games, Jack Ryan, Narcos and The Grand Tour are examples of content that can only be accessed in India using streaming services. If this is what you're looking for, you should make your dumb TV smart.

On the other hand, if you have a small TV, don't find too much time to watch TV, or usually stick to regular programming available on cable or DTH connections, you may not need a smart TV at all. For example, if all you really do is watch the news or sports, you'll find a cable or DTH connection adequate. Even if you do have the occasional need for a smart TV, it may make sense to use the cable option for those occasions, rather than invest in a dedicated streaming stick or console.

Furthermore, there are a couple of reasons to not make your TV smart. The first applies to the actual smart TVs themselves; software updates are often slow or non-existent on many smart TVs. This will cause the TV to have performance or security issues over time, and it's perhaps a better idea to not invest in a smart TV at all.

The second is about privacy. Connecting any TV to the Internet opens up the possibility of your viewing data being used in ways you may not like. This can include selling your data to advertisers, which can then use your viewing habits to target specific ads to you. It can also be worse, where a TV with a webcam or attachable camera can then be used to spy on you in your home. The safest way to protect your privacy with regards to your TV is to keep it disconnected and functional only as a screen with local content sources.
