The ring is far too humble in their eyes, but it will please you. Astaroth made sure of that, designed it to perfection. They fiddle with it, twisting and turning it this way, that way to catch the light. Waiting has never been more boring. Who came up with this tradition, anyway? Why must they kneel?
Still, you came and their eyes snap to you. You look completely unaware and… well, they might dislike it, but it will be fun to see your face. A smile finds its way on their lips. It feels stiff, lacking the usual ease, but they kneel before you. Any embarrassment they feel is quickly swallowed by your face. It’s priceless, transforming the smile into something much more amused.
They hold out the ring, glancing at it again. “Well, I don’t know where you picked this up. It’s an useless tradition in our case.” A pause, eyes narrowing at the ring. “No, I mean its useless for the mortals. Eternal love? Please, they live and die in a blink of an eye. Have you ever heard of ants getting married? Neither I have, but --”
“Are you trying to propose or to argue against it?” you cut in, befuddled.
They halt to a stop. Blinking slowly up to you, they bite their lips. “Which one would it please you more?”
The smirk on your face makes them glance away. You look too knowing, too amused right now to bear. Ugh, are they making a fool of themself? You’re going to laugh, aren’t you?
A brush against their face, fingers grazing the underside of their eye drags their gaze away from their shoes toward you.
“You’re nervous.”
“…why I would be when I know the answer already?”
A chuckle. “Do you? Then what is my answer, darling?”
They gulp, throat dry when the petname leaves your lips. Dirty tricks, you learned well. “That you will say yes and we’ll have a big, lavish wedding.” They smirk up at you, hoping it sounds convincing.
A hum, your fingers grazing theirs as you take the ring away. “The wedding is debatable.” Still, extend your hand and they'll take the ring back. Glancing from it to your face, they slip it over your waiting finger. The hold lingers, before a sigh leaves Astaroth’s lips, pressing a kiss to your knuckles.
“See? I knew the answer already.”

Important announcement.
Hello everyone. I bring bad news.
I am dropping the game. There I said it. It is hard for me to admit this to myself, much less to you all. I could blame a million things - but the simple truth is that even when I have free time I do everything but write.
It's hard to pinpoint the exact reason. It could be that I'm scared I will not do this story justice, or the plot is too hard, or that it is my first IF as someone with little to no experience as a writer/coder. Yes, all of that is true, but the hardest is that I lost all drive for it. I don't even imagine scenes anymore, which pains me to admit.
Frankly, the fact that I continued writing it for nearly two years is downright a miracle. I'm proud of that because I know myself and I had no expectations for the story or the warm attention it received.
I am thankful for your presence over this journey, for all your well wishes and each ask and note. Thank you all.
Maybe we'll meet again on this road - I don't plan to abandon writing entirely. Farewell and may the moon watch over you.

i like working at plant store. sometimes you ring up someone and there's a slug on their plant and so you're like "Oh haha you've got a friend there let me get that for you" and you put the slug on your hand for safekeeping but then its really busy and you dont have time to take the slug outside before the next customer in line so you just have a slug chilling on your hand for 15 minutes. really makes you feel at peace with nature. also it means sometimes i get to say my favorite line which is "would you like this free slug with your purchase"

I made these as a way to compile all the geographical vocabulary that I thought was useful and interesting for writers. Some descriptors share categories, and some are simplified, but for the most part everything is in its proper place. Not all the words are as useable as others, and some might take tricky wording to pull off, but I hope these prove useful to all you writers out there!

Seven Hard-Won Tips Specifically for Writing Interactive Fiction
This is pretty fun, putting together these lists of writing tips. Today's list is explicitly about interactive fiction.
The trick to writing great interactive fiction that anticipates, foreshadows, introduces themes early, and has interesting choices that set up later events is to *go back and rewrite the earlier chapters* after you’ve written later chapters. That way you look like a genius who can plot things out way in advance, but in fact, you just went back and made it seem that way. Good writing is recursive, and that’s just how it is.
I start with an outline, then I write a code skeleton, leaving blanks for the prose, and then go in and fill in the prose. This way I’m either in code-brain or prose-writing-brain. I don’t like switching between the two. Then, after than phase, I go back one more time and I do the callbacks—you know. Might the main character be wearing a feathered boa in this scene? Here’s some custom text. Might the main character be limping? Here’s some more custom text. If you do that after you write the prose, you’ll have the leisure to think of anything fun and specific you can use.
Callbacks tell players that their choices are unique, important, memorable, and valued by the writer. It tell them that their choices have led them down their own particular path that the writer is rewarding with unique prose. It doesn’t have to have a stat effect or create a new fork in the narrative. Great prose is the reward.
Find an group of alpha readers to read your work early and often and then shut up while they read it and just listen to what they say and comment. You must resist the urge to explain because you won’t be there at everyone’s house when they are playing your game or reading your narrative.
Make rules for yourself about how you are going to name your variables. Don’t do what I did, with a horrible blend of sometimes calling a chracter “gil” in the variables and sometimes “gilberto”; sometimes “fitz” and sometimes “fitzie”; sometimes “metvyv” and sometimes “met_tabby”—ugh! This is self-torture. Don’t do what I did.
Keep your initial creation of variables super organized. Write comments in there explaining what these variables are and when you might need them. I comment most when I am creating variables. You might create a variable in chapter one called “mustardallergy” that you don’t need until chapter eight, so write a comment that says “variables for chapter eight” and stick that “mustardallergy” variable under it. I didn’t do this for my first games, and I regretted it.
Use generic variables and make your life easy. If you are writing a scene at the racetrack, just make a “xrace” modifier and add and subtract to it willy-nilly to represent just general ups and downs of fortune. Stub your toe? -5 xrace. Wear a fine hat? +8 xrace. Throw around some money at the bar? +12 xrace! Eat some bad shellfish? -15 xrace! Then add xrace to every test. It’s a way of tracking just the ups and downs of fortune. You can omit it when it doesn’t make sense, but it’s just a great way to make tests and rewards and penalties cumulatively meaningful without having to have a billion variables tracking every last *reason* for the rewards and penalties.

Cycle Link: Part 1 Part 2
We already know how to show basic cycling links on Twine Sugarcube, but if we what if we want to show a cycling link along with descriptions that changes in real-time, according to the player’s choices, but we don’t want the descriptions to be stored in the choice variable?
I gotchu: Class Object Variables
We can do this by using class object variables when we make the list of options. Let’s say we want to show weapon options along with a description.
Sword: A mid-range weapon
Dagger: A close-range weapon
Bow & Arrow: A long-range weapon
Then for the list of options, we can write:

And to create the cycling link, as usual:

Sugarcube will shows the index of the class object variable to the players, so the one written on the left side. It’ll automatically save the actual content of the class object (right-side) as player’s choice in the variable $weaponofchoice.
And that’s it!
We’ve come full circle back to class object variables guys lol. At this rate, I’ll just go ahead and make a class object variable cult, but I can’t help it ok.. It’s just way too convenient, and we can do so much with it.

tysm! And nah, you'll be fine. Myspace is still up, it actually takes a looooot for them to take down a website. Websites really require very little to stay up. Much more likely thing to happen is for us to be flooded with bots and errors until its just not worth being here anymore. The only time I can really think of a fairly big company totally taking down a website was Yahoo answers, but that was an ever declining user base with Reddit and Quora handily taking it's place. Tumblr has a lot going for it but especially that other competition (Twitter) is going down quite a bit, so Tumblr is getting a pretty good stream of new users. If something starts to go down you'll be told about and given a pretty good warning. If we're given a warning then I'll make a bluesky account, but until then it'll just be fearmongering to spread stuff like this. (also if we're not given a warning then I'll post something on the cogforum. There will be ways of letting people know where I am.)

Today, I have finally gotten around to writing a bit of Night, and I say it is pretty amusing in a way. Here is a sneak peek.
They stare at your arm, watching the fingers sink into the fabric. Slowly, they drag their eyes away, up your arm until they find home on your face. Night’s gaze dancing on your face suddenly makes your throat dry, tongue feeling strange in your mouth.
Your eyes meet. You don’t know what they see, but their gaze holds a soft confusion you rarely see in someone. A beat passes, they glance away.
