ok hear me out: 15x19 and the f*nale are cas pov. the empty is tormenting him with visions of the worst possible future - his found family all dead or grieving, his son burdened with the responsibility of the entire universe, dean trapped for eternity with john in the place where his own siblings betrayed him and his own father abandoned him. dean moves on from cas' death in those episodes because that's what cas thinks would happen - he's never seen dean without him. he doesn't know his love is requited.

one of my favorite cas headcanons is that he doesn’t really have a concept of what’s “supernatural” and what isn’t – he just knows what exists – so dean’s like, ok babe we’re about to interact with some of sam’s new Normal Friends so don’t talk about anything magical or paranormal they don’t know is really out there and cas nods like he totally gets it but then fifteen minutes later is frantically googling “are bears real” on his phone
