if he hears her swear, he’ll have to forgive her for it, or run her through drills later. because he’s gone before she can even predict his next move, and she just barely remembers to activate weapon’s number one—— not that it even helps. kikoru makes a frustrated noise as she just barely dodges one of narumi’s attacks, using her momentum to propel herself across the training room and give herself space and time to work with.

( more speed, more agility, more skill! she needs it all. )

❝ you didn’t even let me take a breath, ❞ she complains, but it’s not even halfhearted. her migraine increases in intensity as she tries to focus, her eyes twitch with the strain, but—— there! she sees it, the way he’s going to move, and it pays off. she blocks one of narumi’s attacks successfully, even if her feet skid across the floor with the force of it.

a deep breath in, then out. kikoru pushes against narumi’s weapon and tries not to let the success get to her head. one minor victory isn’t worth getting excited over, after all—— not when she has so much to improve on! ❝ again! ❞ she shouts, readying her stance once more. ❝ until i drop! ❞

the bravado isn't believed, her words almost mirroring his own back when he was the one training to understand the weapon. the concept of enhanced foresight seemed trivial enough that gen would understand anyone who scoffed and laughed at the weapon — he definitely did, when first introduced to it. what good would extreme anticipation do in a fight? how good could it truly be to justify permanent biological modification? 

it hadn't been ideal, at first. the migraines were constant, even when the weapon wasn't being used. there was a never ending pressure always building in the back of his head, as if his body was fighting its own battle against the foreign element. sleep hardly came, his mood only worsened, and he began to carry nausea bags in his jacket pocket ( he still carries them, just because you never know when a bad dizzy spell is going to hit! )

❛ breathe and compose yourself. ❜ it's all the comfort he could offer; there was no room for tenderness in his training field. ❛ it won't get easier. you'll just get used to it. ❜ he gives them their desired second — and then gen is gone, launching into his next attack.

@rt0001, unprompted —— ❝ it's always your annoying bowl-cut sidekick, and that's starting to really piss me off. so now, i'm challenging you directly; spar with me, ashiro. ❞

he has always shown up each time she’s been called to ariake, without doubt, without question. a nagging presence in her ear, complaining about this or that or who or what—— to anyone else, it must be annoying. grating, even, that the best in the force acts without respect or manners or anything remotely similar to his station. mina’s overheard it, spoken with both fondness and with anger—— yes, to anyone else, this sort of situation would be infuriating.

❝ no. ❞ short and sweet and straight to the point—— there’s no use in pretending otherwise. mina barely gives him a glance before she keeps walking, because she’s seen the face he’ll make a hundred times already. he’ll sputter, gawk, and three, two, one ... trail after her. ( right on cue. ) it reminds her of bakko, but the kaiju is more well behaved than narumi could ever be.

❝ what do you mean, no?! ❞ he keeps talking, and mina halfheartedly tunes him out. the manila folder tucked under her arm has far more pressing concerns for her at the moment, of new recruits and progress on another weapon and small things, little things, that will help ensure their survival. ( it feels like an anchor, a weight tying her down. ) they’ll stack up, she thinks, hopes, with time.

❝ are you scared of being beaten by me? well, i wouldn’t be surprised—— you have a reputation to keep up, after all, and who knows how your division would react when i beat you—— ❞

❝ narumi-san, ❞ she says, turning on her heel in one fluid motion, ❝ i’m afraid you will have to find someone else. ❞ small things, little things, require her attention—— but more importantly, this is simply a part of their routine. ❝ as a captain, i’m sure you understand. ❞ the words are near practiced at this point, but they have never been meant as a taunt. mina truly means it, down to each and every syllable.

( ‘ as a captain, i’m sure you know the weight. ’ )

❝ despite your irritation towards hoshina, i’m sure he’d be accommodating to your wishes. ❞ he stares at her like he can't believe what he's hearing, and if the corners of mina's lips twitch—— well, that's between the two of them. ❝ if that’s all, then i bid you good day. ❞

@giriure, starter call —— it's not that she's unfamiliar with such displays among her fellow recruits, but it is certainly far from her understanding. ❝ it would be faster to simply shoot it, ❞ mina says. she turns from the desecrated kaiju with no judgement, only curiosity. ❝ is there a reason you choose otherwise? ❞

by the way, with the developments of chapter one hundred and twenty-three, i want to make this clear: in my canon, weapon no. one is not simply a handful of eye contacts. they preserved the kaiju's actual eyes, and instead of being lenses, those who wish to use the weapon must give up their actual eyes. this is in conjunction with sparky's narumi. in essence, a soldier who is compatible with weapon no. one must be willing to give up a part of their humanity in order to defeat kaiju. the fact that kikoru, after losing her father, was willing to go that far in order to avenge him speaks volumes. when a weapon no. one wielder dies, the kaiju's eyes are taken from the body and preserved once more.

@rt0001, starter call —— ❝ captain, ❞ she says, ❝ i don't mean to pry, but—— it sounds like you've been stuck on that level for a while. ❞ or at least, longer than he usually takes. ❝ perhaps you should take a break from it and join us for drinks tonight instead. ❞

stupid, stupid teacher! ( foolish, foolish girl. ) kikoru grits her teeth as she catches her breath, inhaling and exhaling in a steady rhythm—— she doesn't quite snap back at him because she knows he's right. and that's the worst part of it.

❝ one second, and then we go again, ❞ he demands, not even bothering to listen to narumi's drivel. ( he'll take it to heart anyways. ) his eyes hurt as he glances up at his teacher, a migraine blooming in the corners of his head; is this what it was like for him at first? it's almost hard to imagine with the ease at which he moves now, not that kikoru would ever tell him that. ❝ i just need to get used to it. ❞

a lie—— but one they will make into the truth. no matter how long it takes / and it won't take long / because this is what kikoru had been born for. this is what their father gave his life for.

there's little sympathy held for her. there's almost always little sympathy held, mainly because there wasn't anything @huntskaiju hated more than pity, but there's even less now in this situation. their compatibility with rt-0001 wasn't expected, but hardly a surprise; she was every bit a monster her father was, and wouldn't have secured a spot in his division if they wasn't. that he hasn't gotten sick from the mental overload yet was worthy of praise, but the strain that would come with two number weapons wasn't going to be easy. the fact that she's been limited to only using rt-0001 for this training session probably has her pissed off.

❛ your reaction time is waaaay too slow. you should be blocking every move i make with your foresight. ❜ bayonet is repositioned, body coiled and ready for another onslaught of attacks. were he to properly tap into rt-0001’s potential, he'd be able to stop him easily. ❛ i’m practically falling asleep over here. they'll never let you play with both weapons at this rate. ❜

( he knows he’d been too weak to protect iharu or even himself. it’s embarrassing, sure, but above all else—— it’s frustrating. he resists the urge to lift a hand to one of his scars, the undeniable proof of no. nine’s existence. his hands clench into fists anyways.

somewhere deep down, no. six purrs in agreement. reno tries not to think about it too hard. )

❝ and if not you, then probably kikoru. or kafka? ❞ —— and because he can get under narumi’s skin this way.

a wise guy, huh? the kid goes up against an identified kaiju and thinks he's hot shit, huuuh? well, there's no denying that it definitely does provide some bragging rights — there's only a small handful in the defense force who could say that exact same thing. but narumi stands just as straight, a smirk absentmindedly forming at the mention of kaiju no. nine.

❛ you're afraid of no. nine? that's fair, you are still a rookie, after all. and the report mentioned that kaiju really did a number on you and your friend. ❜ eyes narrow at the memory of the enemy, looking almost inhuman in the light. ❛ what i wouldn't give for that monster to appear one more time.. oops, guess i shouldn't really be wishing for something like that, huh? ❜

it's not that he's embarrassed about getting lost—— it's inevitable, in a base as big as ariake, but—— well. maybe he is. reno flexes his hands, a motion that's become more comfortable and more grounding over the course of his training, and stands up a little straighter. at least they've been saved by a familiar face, they think with a little bit of relief. ❝ it's good to see you, sir. i didn't realize you were also called here ... it feels like an impromptu reunion for the third division. ❞
