Her heart ached. Suzume bowed her head, amber eyes dimming slightly as she stared at the floor. She didn’t want to betray her family. She wanted what was good for the people, the nation that the Firelord before her was working so hard to restore. She hated being torn.
“I don’t know,” she admitted softly. “But I can find out.”
“ you won’t go alone, ” he speaks out the order casually as he walks towards the doors of the throne room, opening them with a mere push and gesturing her to follow him. “ i’ll accompany you and we’ll have disguised soldiers behind us at all times. for now, wait here. ” zuko walks away to his chamber, leaving the other fire bender surrounded by his soldiers. in only a few minutes he returns in a new outfit, the mask of the dark spirit attached to his hip and the dual swords hanging on his back. “ do you know any previous locations they were at? we could start from there. ”

if ty lee had any choice in the matter , she would simply move in . but the whole family freaks her out a little , so she’ll only do it if either OFFERS . ‘ oof , for nothing bad i hope . ’ ty lee sees zuko as the LEAST harmless of the family , which is kinda ironic , considering azula is one of her best friends . ‘ perhaps the hot chips will color her up again ! ’ she’ll say with a giggle , handing the whole bag to zuko . hey , she’s never had a problem with sharing ! ‘ cool , i’ll just hang out with you instead ! i feel like you and i never get to just chat . ooooooh , is that hot chocolate ? ’ eyes go wide like a PUPPY .
“ ugh--- okay, sure. ” he agrees and gestures to the table, his way of offering ty lee a seat, then digs through the bag to take out a bag of mild hot chips. he’ll leave the extra hot ones for azula. “ oh. did you want one? ” zuko grabs his sister’s mug from the cupboard and fills it with two spoons of hot chocolate before covering the powder with the remaining hot water. “ here. there’s milk in the fridge if you wanted any. ” zuko places the mug in front of ty lee then sits up on the counter, busying himself with the chips as his stomach rumbles quietly. “ so explain to me, how do you see people’s auras? ” not that he’s a believer. in fact, zuko is very sceptical and dismisses these things.

Azula snorted a short, mirthless laugh. She would hope he wanted to help her, otherwise, why else would he be here? He seemed to have no intent to turn on her, though perhaps his plan to betray her was preceded by him waiting, waiting for her to be truly vulnerable, waiting to see how strong she was with her Avatar powers, waiting for a moment to strike.
She had nothing but her paranoia to defend her now, that and her instincts which were shot to hell because if she couldn’t trust her father, couldn’t trust herself, then what good were they? She knew nothing, nothing of the world outside of the Fire Nation, nothing of being the Avatar, nothing of how she came to gain this power, she didn’t even know herself well enough to know what power she held. So she would cling to her paranoia, regard everyone, even her brother and uncle, with fear and cautiousness, because if she couldn’t trust even herself, who could she trust?
It took a long while for her to reply. She knew what Ozai would do to her, she had an inkling of an idea of the cruelty he was capable of. He wouldn’t kill her, she knew that too, because finding another Avatar would be too much of a hassle, but he would make her life hell, especially because she ran.
“If that’s what you want.” Zuko said. She did want to sleep, exhaustion replaced adrenaline but she was too wired to sleep, too scared that she might get jumped in her sleep, or their ship would be found, or maybe that Zuko wanted her asleep so he could whisk her off to the Fire Nation, back home, back to father.
What she wanted was to be normal, and she almost said that out loud. But she didn’t. She said something else instead, posed a question that had lingered on her mind ever since their earlier escape. “Why did you come with me?” She asked. “Why throw away your chance with father, your chance at honor, to come with me? I know you don’t like me, and the feeling is mutual, and I cannot figure out why you would do something so stupid.”
azula always lies. he used to chant to himself as a child, even she broke the news about their mother. even when he came back and saw her running away. it was an impulsive decision to follow her and help her blindly, a decision fuelled by affection held towards his sister that zuko didn’t know he still had. their relationship has always been broken and unstable, ever since they were young children. and yet zuko found it within himself to be kind to her when she did not lie.
“ i don’t know, ” he begins honestly, forehead still pressed against the door. “ i guess... you looked human for the very first time, ” he cannot forget the look of desperation in her face when she’d told him why she was running away. zuko’s heart raced inside his chest when he turned on his heel and led her to the docks, the mask of the dark spirit hiding him. he knew why their uncle had joined: iroh always wanted the safety of his nephew and niece, no matter how deranged or how bad they were. “ i didn’t want you to become like me. ”
he swallows drily and his fist clenches tightly. “ being at father’s mercy is barely any mercy at all. ” after all, he had tasted it first hand. showing defiance or individualism was a crime in the fire lord’s eyes, one that could be punishable by death should he be caught in a bad mood.
“ if i won my honour, you would’ve lost yours. in his eyes, at least. ” zuko sighs deeply. “ i’ve learnt that you gain your honour through your deeds and choices, not through someone’s agreement on whether you have it or not. even if we don’t like each other, i wouldn’t let anyone suffer at the father lord’s hand again. ”

“ and why can’t i sit in on this one? i came all this way. uncle wants me here, don’t you, uncle? ” she doesn’t wait for an answer, letting her legs out in front of her. “ what’s for lunch? ”
zuko groans in response, averting his gaze to the lake as he sits down on the blanket his uncle had laid out for them. iroh watches them in silence, as if cautious of what will come of this interaction. “ potato salad and spring rolls. ” despite the nice smell, his appetite dies, golden eyes focused on azula. “ didn’t you have other business to attend to? like whatever father told you and did not tell me? ”

“ maybe i wanted to join you —– he is my uncle, too. ” she drops cross - legged onto the blanket, “ i assume my invitation got lost in the mail ? ”
“ i set it on fire. ” he grumbles, kicking a rock and sending into the lake before them. uncle iroh waits behind them but zuko waves him off, letting him know there isn’t going to be a peaceful walk back. “ there’s another one next week, if you’re so keen on joining us. ”

“I didn’t want it to be this way,” she uttered, glowering at the ground. Reporting those one held near and dear was not an easy task, but it was the right one. “But my own voice is falling on deaf ears. My parents are blindly loyal to your father and the empire that flourished under him and his father before him. And my brothers are loyal to my parents.”
Suzume had to stiffen to not to tremble. She wasn’t afraid for herself, but for her family. They had chosen a terrible path, and now they would be forced to pay for it. “They’re…they and other nobles are planning to liberate Ozai.”
he’s all too familiar with a history of family divergences. zuko listens with more empathy now, hands clasped behind his back and golden eyes fixed on the other. the fire of the throne room reflects in them. “ i see, ” he starts slowly, grinding his teeth. a lot of people have remained loyal to ozai and his rule of terror, planning to overthrow zuko.
“ for now i will increase security where ozai is held. ” the fire lord looks at the soldier to his right, who nods and walks away immediately. “ and i will send scouts to locate the rebels. if you know where they might be located you have to tell me first and no one else. understood? ”

Azula pressed her head against the wall and closed her eyes tightly, teeth grit together like she was trying to hold back a scathing remark- or tears. The way her life was going, it could have been either one, really. Zuko couldn’t see her, but she still refused to let him see her cry.
He didn’t know how she, and everyone else, found out? She was almost surprised that Ozai hadn’t told him about her blunder, and she was also pissed that he left the tale for her to recount. Apparently, she had to do everything herself, whether she liked it or not.
Once she opened her eyes again, she spoke, her voice sullen. “It was a mistake. I was sparring with a soldier, he managed to catch me off guard, and when I went to defend myself, I earthbent.” The soldier snitched, and her life was changed ruined forever; Ozai ordered her imprisoned (in her room, under house arrest, but also under constant watch), had Zuko summoned back home- he knew the rest.
She gestured lamely, lifting one arm for a moment before letting it fall back to her side, and shifted to face away from the door, though her back remained against the wall. “If that’s all you want to know, can you go away now? I have better things to do instead of entertaining your hero complex.” Like sleep, or cry, or, literally anything that wasn’t talking to Zuko.
ozai had made sure to keep azula’s powers a secret and let him wonder about where his sister was when he returned. when he asked, he was met with a dismissive answer that barely told him anything. she’s on her own mission. she’s away. it’s none of your concern. zuko had stopped asking but it didn’t stop him from looking and threatening the weaker soldiers for information.
the fire prince can hear his uncle walking down the corridor and he waits until he can see iroh to shake his head. she won’t come out. their uncle walks away but zuko remains, shoulder now pressed against the door, a deep sigh coming from him. “ this has nothing to do with my ego or hero complex, ” he begins with an even tone, mind racing with all that he wants to tell her.
“ you won’t believe it, but i want to help you. if fa--- if ozai ever catches you, what he’ll do will be horrible. ” zuko touches the scar on his eye, feeling the burnt skin. he was lucky to be alive. vivid memories come to him and he is 13 again at the mercy of his father. a cold shiver travels up his spine and he shifts uncomfortably, forehead pressed to the door.
“ i won’t let that happen to you. ” he says it quietly. despite how many arguments they’ve had and how azula always toyed with zuko’s feelings, he still found it in himself to care for her. “ i’ll let you sleep now, if that’s what you want. ”

“ you didn’t think to warn anyone? ” his voice is stern, golden eyes glaring the fellow fire bender down. the fire lord taps his index finger on the arm of the throne before he sits up, soldiers at each side tensing until he waves at them to relax. “ very well. i’ll offer you help. ”

kavataar:
‘ the others and ME, right, zuko ?? ‘ there is a smile brightening her features as druk lands. FOND, FOND, AN UTTER FONDNESS — there was a friendship that grew between them, powerful and brutal, shadowing the strained relationship that had once lived in their empty spaces. they had carved out the worst parts of themselves, the crawling horror that haunted their pasts. she is happy to stand at his side, to look over her shoulder and know that he was at her back. ‘ alright, help me down, i’m not even attempting to jump off this thing, ‘ she laughs, a hand reaching out for his own. ‘ AND DON’T TELL ANYONE i needed your help. ‘
when he jumps off druk’s back, zuko is feels how the gravity pulls him as if being up in the clouds made him forget how the ground feels. a smirk forms on his lips as he holds katara’s hand, teasing and silent in response to her warning. “ depends. it’s good blackmail. avatar katara cannot dismount a dragon. ” once her feet are touching the ground, druk takes off and zuko retreats his hand from katara’s. “ you’re welcome to dine at the palace, if you want. ” the offer comes from a place of loneliness. despite the servants and the soldiers being more relaxed around him than ozai, there is still a bridge that will not be crossed. “ i think tonight’s special is earth kingdom recipes. last week’s was water tribe. ” he doesn’t mention how he didn’t like the sea prunes.

withelemcnts:
It had been a night for sure; one of many that had succeeded her strange, life-ruining revelation, but tonight she had escaped, albeit with far more people than she had expected. Iroh, with his connections, while not her favourite person but he was at least useful. Zuko, on the other hand, was nothing but a thorn in her side and would likely continue to be; what, with his honour-bound quest to find the avatar and all.
(Here she was, the avatar, scared and vulnerable. He could turn her over to their father and easily regain his honour. She didn’t trust him, couldn’t trust him.)
Zuko at her door couldn’t be a good thing; though her adrenaline from the escape had long since worn off, her paranoia wasn’t as quick to go, and his voice set her on edge. She wanted to be alone right now, needed to be alone, but her stupid brother had helped her so she had to at least see what he wanted.
Azula stood, and went to slump against the wall next to the door, head turned to face it as she spoke. “What do you want, Zuko?” She demanded, tone sharp, but undoubtedly tired. “I’m not in any mood to deal with you right now, so make it quick.”
he can hear the tiredness in her voice. his hand remains near the door, only starting to lower as he thinks about what he wants to tell her. when he made his way to her room, zuko did not plan out how this conversation would go. she’s the avatar. she’s the person ozai hates the most. she’s the one zuko had been looking for for almost three years. his nails begin digging into his palm as raw emotion takes over.
“ i just wanted to ask.... how? ” how are you the avatar? the bridge between the spirit and human worlds. the symbol of peace. azula has never been peaceful nor spiritual, not that zuko knows of. “ how did you find out? ” did you not know you could’ve saved me so much pain if you had told me? the question is repeated in his head as he lowers his hand and tightly grips his robes. of all the people, it had to be her. the self centred and spoiled princess. despite refusing to acknowledge it, zuko feels overwhelmed with jealousy. it tastes like bile and it makes him tremble.
the prince had never been ozai’s favourite. he was lucky to be born. lucky to be allowed the privilege of living. for a moment, when they boarded the ship he had wanted to turn on her and take her back to ozai in order to regain his honour. in order to become ozai’s favourite. he blocks the thought. azula is his sister and the avatar -- he must protect her. “ give me a chance to help you get through this. ”

zuko struggles so much to behave like a normal teenager and it carries on into his young adult years. he doesn’t know when he’s supposed to smile or laugh, or when it’s appropriate to reveal something personal. he didn’t exactly grew into his teens with normal socialisation and he has to learn it when he’s already past 16. he’ll be out with the gaang and when there’s a silence he fills it in with ‘my mom abandoned us but before she did she taught me how to befriend animals’ and everyone’s just. awkward.

@withelemcnts / 🔥 imagine dragons - second chances
“ please let me in , ” his voice is quiet, quiet as the knock on azula’s door as if he hopes she doesn’t hear him. he remains completely still and his knuckle hovers before the door, eyes on the floor but his mind flowing back to the moment he saw azula escaping. she’s the avatar, he kept telling himself as they boarded the ship with uncle iroh. whether he felt pity or jealousy in that moment it didn’t matter --- all he knew was he had to get her away from ozai before she became like him. angry, miserable, marked. “ i believe in second chances. open up, azula. ”

he is not the only one who struggles with their emotions — she often finds herself swallowed whole by the sweet temptation of powerful anger ( SHE STILL DOES NOT LIKE RECEIVING HIS BRUTAL WARMTH ). ‘ don’t shout at me again or i’ll make you really regret it, zuko, ‘ she huffs, and she quells flames in her palms as she glares at him. ‘ i forgive you. but you have to learn when to pick your battles. ‘
he recognises the threat and accepts it. “ i’m sorry. i’ll do better. ” zuko averts his gaze, remaining quiet for a moment before he forces a smile and takes a step closer to katara, golden eyes flickering to where the flames had been. “ would.. getting some boba tea make it better? there’s a new shop close to here. ”
