Fashion design project class.
I had fun stitching the bag, but it was a lot more time consuming. It was difficult because it had to be hand-stitched, so there was a lot of crookedness, which I couldn’t stand for.

This project was built around drawing a selfie that best represented ourselves. I found a lot of issues with selecting a selfie, because I felt that what best represented me in a selfie, was when I was with SeHee, who is my soulmate. However, she was not in the country, and I didn’t have a quality selfie to work off of. Therefore, when I was struggling to choose a selfie image, I had a discussion, and was able to derive the idea of reflecting my face off of a phone that had SeHee’s image in it.
This was an extremely fun process for me because I love drawing people. I didn’t really run into many problems after deriving the image I was going to draw.
I decided not to be as literal for the color pencil part - of the while phone, in a way that it shows blue for the shadow. It was to show color theory, but I didn’t make it very dark, because it made it visually more interesting and diverging.
We did however, have a different task, in the beginning. We were supposed to just do a phone with a outline of a hand, but because we used grey paper, the line drawing didn’t really show up from a slight bit backward, you couldn’t really read the hand. Therefore, it was interesting, how we went through a process of trial and error for drawing the selfie project, as a class.

This project was about creating an animation that told a simple story. Originally the video was supposed to be 15 seconds, but I ended up extending that to about double.
This wasn’t my intention, but it ended up this way as I was working on it. In the beginning, I collected a whole bunch of gifs and emojis. I decided to mainly collect gifs from this Korean application, that is a Korean version of whatsapp. I faced limitations in finding all gifs, so I had to search for a whole bunch of gifs and images, before I could decide what story to portray, so that I could portray the story well.
I created two videos, but this one was more popular because of the interest it created.
I started with a very simple intention of trying to show a story where a guy gets rejected, gets upset, and then goes to another girl. Therefore, the story ended up being about a loop about a “playboy.”
I struggled to find perfect emojis, as well as timing the video to show the story in the best it could tell the story. It became a very tedious task, to replay and replay again, so that I could determine if for example, the sound, should come exactly as the bear got shocked, or if it should come some tiny milliseconds after the shock.

This project was built around creating a gift wrap that was local. We were told to conduct idea development and choose one theme pretty quickly, so that we could focus and make it a good design. We were told to stick to a theme and the content we choose, in order to make a beautiful image, at least.
So, in the beginning, I chose to talk about the local with the idea of revealing and concealing. It is somewhat controversial, in that it is the hair that surrounds the eyes to only reveal the eyes, but that hair is actually what should be covered as well.
Either way, from the beginning I had to work back and forth from a digital to physical work. I first created sketches of different curvilinear lines, chose one and then put them into the computer in order to create a pattern. I then, created individual pieces for all of the separate parts and then scanned them and put it back onto the computer to create the final work.
From this project I learnt about the connection between different surfaces and how both are very interconnected.

This is a project that involved three different materials or surfaces, it involved working with the m-otto, sketchup, and then photoshop, to create three different images.
The first part involved some conceptual development, where I thought about how other people are what creates what I am. So after discussion, I realized that my original sketches were not reflective of my concept and I had to develop a new way, which was more on the basis of the intertwining of a tree stump.
I didn’t know how to create this at all, so I had to experiment and try again and again. At first, I didn’t even know what shape, so I was trying different ways of connecting the various pieces. And then, I was able to come to this, which was only a result of rebuilding three times, so that it would work as a visually appealing piece of work. This was a very fun, but painful process, as the skin on my hands started to peel off because of the overuse of the plastic.
Then, I went on to try and build this on sketchup. It was very hard in the beginning because I didn’t know how to use it at all. Once I got a hang of it, the problem was with making a design that was most reflective of my M-otto design, or even if I changed it, something that was still interesting. So, I removed the triangles within the insides, because I found that unnecessary and also very difficult to recreate in an effective way. Then, I went on to experiment with spacing between each spiral, the shape of the ending, the shape of the spiral - circular, square, or a hexagon.
Finally, I went on to the last process of photoshop, which was finally a tool that I had prior knowledge with. Either way, this was difficult to find a perfect space for the work, as I didn’t want to make it a skyscraper, as I felt that was quite an obvious answer to this problem. At first I tried to find an image for the perspective that I liked, but there was always a problem with this, so I decided to find an image that suited, and then I captured an image with the exact perspective.

This is a short project we did at the end of the module for the still life drawing project. It was just a simple fun thing we were supposed to create, to explore color theory and the medium of using a light on top of a dark.

Still Life Project
This project involved setting up a still life ourselves, and then choosing a composition within the complex still life setting. We worked to create an interesting composition.
The drawing process of still life was tedious and very time consuming. The line drawing, in particular, was the part I struggled with most. I am the kind of person that will draw according to what I see and not to a measure, and I’ve not had a problem until now. However, because the line drawing and its proportions were essential to this project, it forced me to measure accurately.
Then, I went on to shading, and I went back to thinking about the compositional elements of a work. I had to wonder about what would make it a good drawing. I may have realized this a bit too late in the drawing process. But I learned that the process was just like the previous project, in figuring out where to render and where to not - conceal to reveal. I may have been confused because this was not the only option we could’ve taken, as the project was based on peripheral vision.
By the end, I was quite satisfied with the drawing, although I have to admit, it was the project I struggled with most in drawing. Maybe because I am interesting and always look for concepts within my works, I think because this project was more about the replication of a reality, it was more difficult to be fascinated about.

After the silent video was created, this is the final video.
This video shows an normal, everyday leisure of mine, which is basketball. At first I wanted to be the one shooting the basketball, but that meant that I wouldn’t be the one filming, so I had to ask someone to be there instead.
In the beginning I had a very rigid story line, but I changed this literal story to a more implied one, with the video clips and the sounds playing its separate part.
The video is a rhythmic one, that reflects the act of basketball. The repetitive (implied) practicing of shooting, is what you do in basketball. And in the end we get the relief of the ball going in.
Also, the sounds are sounds I collected of sounds I made using not specifically basketball sounds, but with other things, for example the shooting into the hoops had to be made by swiping a towel over the basketball, because it couldn’t be collected.
It was a fun experience to learn about and deal with sound in this creative format as well.

This was first a silent video that helped make the video itself strong.

Drawing, Module 4, Post 4
This is a drawing project that was built on choosing an object that represents home for us, or an important object.,
At first, I had chosen a basketball pair of shoes, but I changed this object, because I wasn’t sure what message that would convey about me. I felt that a passport was possibly a very simple and ever day object that would be very befitting of representing me.
I believe I am a lost or floating entity that doesn’t really have a belonging to a nationality. I’m from Korea, but I’ve lived here for most of my life, or the largest portion of my life. Therefore, I don’t feel that strong of a connection to Korea as I would’ve if I had lived there my whole life. I felt that how the passport gets stamped, is how I get engrained with a new culture, a new way of living, when I live in different places.
So then, I had to think about how to make the passport as interesting as possible, and I chose to do it in this way.
The drawing process was fun, and one thing I would note, is how I smudged out my face, because it’s the idea that how I look is not at all who I am anymore, and I think that is actually representative for many of us, in such a globalized world today.

Rubbings
At first, this project was supposed to be about using rubbings to create a background, and then going back into it to draw a object of the kitchen in the work. However, the project was changed.
In the end, the project became a task of taking a whole bunch of rubbings from the surroundings of our home and bringing it into an abstract form of work. Using the idea of conceal and reveal, we explored visual movement through value, shapes, and line.
This was a project that killed me towards the end, because a whole bunch of kids came in, and my work was a combination of their imagination in erasing into my work. One of the kids even wrote a name on my work.

Time, Module 2
It was a very difficult process in the beginning because I had never been exposed to the type of thinking that time requires.
Time required a more literal translation, rather than a huge conceptual bubble. It needed an accurate story for this project that would convey well as a visual.
In this project, I explored the ways in which an image is conveyed in movement through the projector, as well as how to make the process more efficient. For example, I generally stuck the pieces of plastic together for each place: one for Thailand, one for America, and one for Qatar, so that it would be a presentation system of sliding, rather than placing.

Drawing_Module 4_Post 2
The exploration of creating a visual object without simply rendering the actual object realistically.
Which was therefore created through the use of push and pull: rendering and shading, implying lines, figure ground reversals, addressing the background, or finding the edge through value.
