Maybe she’s furious because he borrowed one of her favourite sweaters and stretched it out, didn’t clean it, left it in the rain. Maybe she’s furious because someone smoked her last cigarette. Or she’s had enough of the recurring surprise of him being there, the frenemy who also benefits. Whiplash can be more damaging than the sufferer initially realises. The best way to avoid a crash is to expect it.

The two of them, watching the audience leaving the matinee screening of an animated movie where two cats fall in love, all green faces, shaky hands. Every one of the fathers trying to do something about the unfortunate reaction they’ve had. Every one of the mothers feeling something they haven’t felt in years. All the parents, hot under the collar. All the kids close to tears. 

Tyler had invited Faye up to the booth personally. The Bathory film is in pieces on the table, each frame where Faye’s rose petal mouth opens at the neck of another woman chopped up into blink-and-you’ll miss it frames. Prints are rare.

he doesn’t know how long he’s supposed to wait, but by the state of the men let in before tyler stepped out, he can guess it’s nothing short of a day. with a sense of dejection that’s not well hidden, barry angles himself away from the doorframe, freeing up a path for anyone to pass him on by. if there was something more than fuches’ missed calls waiting for him at home, he’d be gone already, dust. then again, if there was something more than fuches’ missed calls waiting for him at home, he’d never have gone to a fight club in the first place.

Nobody had left the house except for Tyler, everyone who had entered had been out on the porch for the requisite number of days. He’d watched Barry rock up this morning, he notices now that he has the required personal effects or less, ‘would it make a difference?’ Wandering up to GI Joe, that straight-backed stance and the jutting chin, the little bit of tension held in the jaw, Tyler lets his eyes roam and says, ‘you’ve been trained somewhere else.’

Tyler resets his jaw where she’s knocked it out of place, her wild little fists swinging, she landed where she was aiming. ‘Didn’t take you a minute to recognise me, huh? You’ve been saying my name in your sleep every night for months.’

‘I can learn new tricks,’ his self-defence is just as much of a joke; the whole prank was Tyler’s idea in the first place, so everything that happened does rest squarely on his shoulders, even if those shoulders aren’t really his. 

He’d heard Jack complaining about something or other, mentioning Marla’s name, and decided to spice things up by stealing all of the chemicals from Marla’s place, including everything from the bathroom and anything illegal. Maybe that was predictable. It’s doing her a service, really.

Standing with his foot on TJ’s neck, Tyler presses him facedown into the concrete and holds him there, expecting he’ll tap out any minute. He’s been a slippery little son-of-a-bitch until now, it was lucky for Tyler that some judo-style grab got the better of him. Capturing him in a twist, putting his weight on his arm. Now they’re both on the ground and Tyler is still pressing down, listening. 

The noise of the gathered group is cacophonous until the moment of struggle, that’s when all sound in the room drops except for the two in the middle. Each pair of eyes ready for the moment of release, the moment of relief and then everything they just saw will be briefly forgotten as it’s replaced by another two tearing into one another.

Less than a minute has passed. The fight took about five. It’s TJ’s first night.
