Carol stood at the balcony of Genet’s headquarters, hands clasping the railing. A light drizzle was falling, making the view of Paris more than a little depressing. It fitted her mood. She took a deep shuddering breath as her eyes scanned the buildings. She didn’t turn around as she heard firm steps behind her come to a halt. 

“Nervous?” Marion Genet asked her. Carol closed her eyes and shook her head, “not for the reasons you think.” 

“Ah, non? Monsieur Dixon? Is he your trouble?” She sounded thoughtful and Carol could just picture her standing there, arms crossed in front of her, one of her arms occasionally moving to bring the cigarette to her lips. Carol felt herself get hotter and took another deep breath, “oui,” she said, “Monsieur Dixon.” She gripped the balcony even tighter. 

She’d come all this way to find Daryl, because she was worried, because she was losing herself without him. I love you. He’d said when he’d left. She thought that must have meant something. 

So, traveling all the way to France to find him, testing her limits with her claustrofobia in that small-ass cockpit. She’d found out that he was totally fine, had found a new family with a woman and a kid. And she kept trying to tell herself that he was happy and that that was good and fair. That that was what she wanted for him, that was what she had to want for him. But it did sting, because although he was happy and shocked to see her, it became all apparent that his thoughts weren’t with her anymore. 

So now, standing at that balcony, she’d given herself over to something else. Marion Genet stepped towards her, her hand resting lightly on Carol’s. “We’ll do this,” Genet told her, “together.” 

Carol gave a small nod, glancing over to her now. Her hand moving to grab Genet’s hand firmly in hers. “Let’s fight for the future.” She said, determinedly.
