as a general rule. if what we’re calling ‘cultural appropriation’ sounds like nazi ideology (i.e. ‘white people should only do white people things and black people should only do black people things’) with progressive language, we are performing a very very poor application of what ‘cultural appropriation’ means. this is troublingly popular in the blogosphere right now and i think we all need to be more critical of what it is we may be saying or implying, even unintentionally.

I posted this picture of my painting to sell in the Facebook marketplace when I was struggling for money. This painting means the world to me and I couldn’t possibly sell it despite the unexpected offers. One woman was very persistent. I finally responded with the reason I couldn’t sell it. I told her the pain behind it, the progress it took to make it where it is now and the literal layers of change behind it. She wanted something similar but wanted it to reflect her struggle. I told her, “Sometimes it’s easier to tell your hurt to someone you don’t know than those you do. Tell me your pain and I will paint it for you.” Now I have a 44 year old friend who trusts on me and it’s my job to put her emotions into canvas. This alone gave me back what I’ve been looking for. A reason to do what I love. Compassion for strangers and love for your passion. That’s what life is about.
