good evening. i've been playing totk. and (spoilers for after completing the quests involving those goddess statues at the springs)

(screaming, sobbing, crying) THAT'S THE GODDESS WHITE SWORD FROM SKYWARD SWORD???

one of the funniest things about totk is the fact that you can "defeat" the gloom hands without actually fighting them.

i'm playing totk (minor spoilers for hyrule castle + a sidequest)

not the dramatic music!! i'm just here to get the champion's tunic. leave me alone, game 😭 though i'm impressed i could glide from lookout landing tower to hyrule castle with tulin's help while i don't have even 2 whole stamina wheels khjddj. i immediately left after doing that one shrine there.

“ ...why are you telling me this? ” his tone isn't without a wary edge, blue eyes narrowing in equal parts confusion and suspicion. maybe he would be less so if the one speaking to him wasn't ganondorf. link recalls everything he has seen and experienced: from the lively castle town turned desolate to the clouds blocking out the sun, link is staring at the source of it.

and that wouldn't be all of the things he could think of. ganondorf is the one who poisoned the great deku tree. link watched his guardian wither away despite his efforts... all for what? her greed? her desire for power?

link should hate her.

and yet, the hero can't summon hatred to poison his voice  ——  perhaps a result of the maturity. link tilts his head up. “ besides, i don't need revenge. ” before anything else, he wants to help others. he wants to give them justice.

link's favorite beverage is milk. yes, he's that type of an adult who would rather drink milk over any alcoholic drink you might offer to him at a party. but if he really needs a drink, he would accept some chateau romani / its hyrulean counterpart. get it 'cause chateau romani is implied to contain alcohol in majora's mask.

nothing will ever beat lon lon milk, though.

      “ ... ”  the hero dressed in green of the forest and fields faces the king of evil; it's a tale as old as time in its ruthless, unstoppable flow.   &   yes, he recalls that day in vivid detail. the courage shone, nay, burned, on the back of his hand. his dread was akin to jolting awake from nightmares when he was merely ten years old  /  a child still blissfully unaware of his greater destiny.

      “ still arrogant as ever, ganondorf dragmire, ”  the hero speaks in an even tone, seemingly unbothered as his eyes follow the gerudo's movements. he can think of other things he could say. (for one, the frozen zora's domain... really? how original.)   &   yet, the hylian doesn't reach for the hilt of his sword.

      “ over a century has passed... ”  he tilts his head and closes his eyes.   &   as he opens them again, his right eye is a glaringly empty socket. one might even mistake it for a mirage, a hallucination; for a second, a tall hylian donning the royal knight's uniform stands in the hero's place.

      but now, it's back to the youth with bright blue eyes.

      “ so, what makes you think i'm not already gone from the mortal realm? another will arrive. soon. ”

you are losing yourself, bit by bit. your own skin is peeling away, moths forming out of it as you shed more of yourself. your breaths birth hummingbirds and doves as they abate, your fears turning into savage things of teeth and claw. how much more of yourself will you have to grate away until you fit the mold you set yourself today? how much more will have to go tomorrow? how much longer until you've shed too much of yourself  —  until the pieces you left by the roadside are more than what little you have left?

      “ monsters are nothing new to me. ”  the knowledge of how to swing, slash, and thrust forward with a blade comes to him like breathing. his travels usually mean fighting malicious creatures residing within temples   &   places left untouched by people.

      “ but those... ” link sheathes his sword.   &   his blue eyes stare down at where slain monsters disappeared in the puff of dark smoke. that's nothing new. what draws link's attention is—

      “ ...seemed different. ”

woo wrote 4 of my owed starters today. i feel good. i'm gonna head to bed. but while i wrote the last one, it got me thinking. is link just musically gifted? he literally has no problems playing a new song immediately after someone teaches it to him.

      “ a giant...? ”  having followed the singing he heard, the young hero tilts his head back. this one looks nothing like the four giants of termina... but perhaps setting any expectations or norms based on that strange land isn't a good idea. (sometimes, he wonders if he had pursued the skull kid into some alternate world.)

      whether it's courage, pure recklessness, or both, tempered by experience no child his age should have, link's first instinct isn't to reach for his sword. instead, a smile tugs at his lips.  “ what's that song called? ”
