Nearly two decades later, I think it just fully hit me why Iroh told Zuko's crew about how he got his scar. It wasn't just to say, "Have some sympathy for him, he had a hard childhood." It was because the crew were all upset (rightfully so) that Zuko had said, "The safety of the crew doesn't matter." and Iroh was trying to point out that, yes, what Zuko had said was wrong, but that's not what he really thinks, at least, that's not what he used to think. There was a time when Zuko cared about the safety of soldiers he had never even met, so much so that he spoke out of turn, which is what led to the domino effect that caused all of them to be sitting on that ship together. And this is brought full-circle when Zuko climbs the ladder to help the helmsman at the end of the episode. And that's when the crew realizes that, temperament aside, Zuko actually has been and is still willing to put everything on the line for the safety of others.

All I really want is a job that makes use of my mind instead of my body. I want people to value me for my education and ideas, not the fact that I can lift a bucket full of dishes. I feel like a piece of meat.

remembering 2 years ago when the people on this site were praising the looting and destruction of small businesses in the name of causing social change.
where’s the change? all I see is permanently shuttered mom-and-pop shops that are never coming back. insurance DIDN’T cover it. and I see people suffering in the wake of the resulting food deserts.
MAYBE if this violence resulted in SOME social change like you guys claimed would happen this could have been an argument worth having. but it DIDN’T. NOTHING. HAPPENED.
all we have is ruined lives and livelihoods.

is it just me, or has Star Trek aged particularly badly as a franchise? I’m not talking technobabble; I’ll give most pre-1970s shows a pass for bad science, since they were really doing their best, and some of my favorite shows use the exact same bad science. I’m talking about it’s tone. I used to like it a lot, but now it just feels really smug and pretentious. “look at how MY secular values have produced a SPACE UTOPIA! All because we have abandoned SUPERSTITION for SCIENCE!”. give me a break.
it somehow manages to be both grossly ethnocentric in it’s embrace of western values while at the same time completely dismissive of the culture that those values sprung from. it is unabashed worship of modernism, a philosophy that died 2 decades ago because of how shallow and meaningless it was (only to be replaced with post-modernism which is arguably worse). with the notable exception of the inclusion of the Ferengi there seems to be no real effort to question or critique the philosophy, or even add a little nuance to it. it never makes any attempt to address the societal ills that resulted from modernism and secularism. it is the storytelling equivalent of drinking mayonnaise.
say what you will about Star Wars, but at least it took 2 REALLY BAD movies to ruin it for me (I still maintain the Force Awakens had some potential). but all it took to ruin star trek for me was getting a bachelor’s degree in the social sciences (history, leaning heavily toward anthropology) to see how full of shit it really is.

I have so much trouble enjoying science fiction and historical fiction nowadays. My stupid college education is getting in the way. things that go through my head:
-no, you can’t harvest zero-point energy from a vacuum; you need an energy gradient to do that.
-wormholes are supposed to be spheres
-no, aliens did not build the pyramids for goodness sake
-no, the church did not declare science heretical in the middle ages
-why is the middle east just a big desert in this?
-if you converted somebody’s body into energy to teleport them, you would literally just be killing and cloning them; not to mention that you would essentially be turning them into a nuclear bomb. Also, perfectly recording that information is basically impossible because of the uncertainty principle
-while on the topic of star trek, I feel like that franchise takes the prize for “the most hilariously unrealistic and over-optimistic depiction of a space-faring civilization in fiction”.
-why is everyone breaking formation in this medieval battlefield? and where are all the pikes?
-that… is not how people dressed back then in that region.
-no, hyperspace isn’t white
-just… everything about “pym particles” and the “quantum realm” in marvel
-*sigh* no, the inquisition was not burning witches in the middle ages.
-stop calling it the dark ages, I BEG you
-nobody takes conservation of mass seriously
-no, making objects and creatures out of “pure energy” isn’t a thing
-ninjas refusing to use guns because “honor” LOL what the fuck they’re ASSASSINS

I hate being stonewalled by bureaucracy. sometimes i think it would be worth it to cause the collapse of western civilization JUST TO GET RID OF THESE WORTHLESS DO-NOTHING GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES.
THEY’RE TRYING TO SEND A RECOVERY CODE TO A PHONE NUMBER NO LONGER IN SERVICE, AND WHENEVER I TELL THEM TO USE A DIFFERENT NUMBER THEY TREAT ME LIKE A SPAM BOT. CONTACTING THE OFFICE GIVES ME THE CHOICE BETWEEN A PRE-RECORDED ANSWERING MACHINE THAT ANSWERS ALL OF THE MOST SUPERFICIAL AND OBVIOUS QUESTIONS, OR A WEBSITE THAT I CAN’T ACCESS PRECISELY BECAUSE IT’S THE ONE I’M CURRENTLY LOCKED OUT OF AND TRYING TO GET THE RECOVERY CODE TO GET BACK INTO.
I DON’T EVEN REMEMBER MAKING AN ACCOUNT FOR THIS STUPID THING. WHO DESIGNED THIS? A SADIST? WHY DO ALL GOVERNMENT WEBSITES SEEM TO BE LIKE THIS?
WHY THE FUCK IS THE ONLY NUMBER FOR THIS NATION-WIDE SERVICE IN COLORADO, AND WHERE ARE ALL THEIR EMPLOYEES?
i’ve been at this for days. i hope north korea nukes this entire country.
WHEN I DO FINALLY GET THROUGH TO THEM, YOU KNOW WHAT THEY’LL PROBABLY SAY? “iT’s nOT OuR jOB! iT’s ThAt OtHER DEPaRtmeNT!” BECAUSE THEY ALL SAY THAT! YOU CALL ONE DEPARTMENT FOR A REQUEST, THEY REDIRECT YOU TO THE NEXT, WHICH DIRECTS YOU TO ANOTHER, WHICH DIRECTS YOU TO ANOTHER, WHICH THEN DIRECTS YOU TO THE FIRST ONE YOU CALLED WHO HAVE ALREADY TURNED ON THEIR USELESS DAMNED ANSWERING MACHINE AND GONE HOME BECAUSE THEY ONLY WORK LIKE 2 HOURS A DAY.
