“We met a couple of times before we, well, became intimate,” she admitted, a small smile growing on her lips. “Oh wow, what a coincidence. How have you liked working for him?” she asked, somehow not managing to pick up on his change in demeanor talking about the other man. When he hesitated, she quirked a brow, then looked confused at his word choice. “Persuasive? What on earth could you mean?”
“Oh, well we met once before he offered me a job, actually. We kinda, sorta, got to know each other. Sorta.” We played a ball game and he broke one of my ribs. “I’m kinda hopin’ that we go on better terms this time ‘round.” He let out a gentle sigh when she wasn’t picking up on the kind of hints he was laying down. “So, uh, let’s see… Y’know how he’s kinda a smooth talker? All charmin’ and suave and stuff?”

His eyebrow cocked at the word ‘sir’. It was more respect than a lot of people gave him these days, that was for sure. He could definitely get used to it. “That quite depends on how you define ‘fun’? But I suppose it has it’s qualities. I would ask you but I take it you’ve never had a bad time in your life.”
“Hm. Somethin’ bad happenin’ tonight bud?” Felix gently sipped at his drink, looking across the surrounding crowd briefly and then turning back to Richard. “I’m doin’ okay. The festival is great. Though I’m sorta playin’ Where’s Waldo with my ex. Except it’s the opposite of Where’s Waldo. More like hide from Waldo. Sneak Past Waldo. Bye Waldo.”

Obviously the last thing she wanted was to make him uncomfortable, but she thrived off of other people’s drama. Hearing someone’s problems and being able to give advice back, or even just gossiping in general, gave her such a rush. So yes, she would drop it for now, but she’d get him to talk about it at some point. Seeing his reaction to Richard’s name had her own eyes widening a little, her brows furrowing as he described Richard in a very basic sense. “Yes, that would be the one. Of course, there’s more to him that I like than that, but you’ve hit the nail on the head sugar. Why, you know him?”
“...It’s that Richard.” Felix still stood there in disbelief and gave a small half-smile. At her furrowed brows, he quickly raised his hands, as if to gesture ‘no offence’. “Oh, I didn’t mean it like that’s why you like him. I ain’t meanin’ to put it like that at all. I, uh, just know him. A bit, not as much as you I’m pretty sure.” Felix gave a small smile, scratching the back of his neck slowly. “He’s hired me to work for him in renovations on houses he’s tryin’ to sell. Kinda recent thing, actually, part-time, but he’s my boss, half of the time.” He paused, mainly because a worry for the woman occurred in his head. “But, uh, isn’t he, sorta, kinda…” He looked a little concerned as he stared at the other, trying to think of a kind way of putting this. “...Persuasive?”

He burst out laughing, in part at the question and in part at the look on Felix’s face. “Just good luck, pal. Gotta have a truck for all the people askin’ me to help ‘em move,” he joked. “Hercules. Nice to meet ya.” He tipped his head and started in that direction, hefting the pipe into the back of the truck when they reached it. “That it, or ya got some more things need movin’?”
“Oh, so you’re a movin’ guy. Movin’ guy? Is that the right term? Guy who moves? Guy with van who moves?” Felix grinned in turn, nodding back. “Hercules. Well, I ain’t never met anyone like you, buddy, it’s gotta be said.” He shook his head gently. “As far as I know, this was the job for the day, and ol’ Missus nature sorted the main part of it out.”

Lottie accepted that he didn’t want to talk about his breakup, trusting that he would talk to her about it at a later time, when the two of them weren’t trying to enjoy themselves at the event they were currently attending. “We’ll get coffee next week or somethin’ and debrief each other on what we’ve missed,” she suggested, smiling over at him before hugging him back tightly. “Well, I did want Richard to ask me at the beginning, but now that I’ve spent some time with John, I want to see where things go with him,” she admitted with a sigh. She smiled at Felix’s observation, her head shaking as she realized how much had changed since he saw her last. “And they’re both royalty,” she told him. “Richard was a king and John was a prince before they came to Fableton.”
“Sounds like a swell plan,” he agreed with a firm nod and a grateful smile. He felt he had talked about his break up constantly recently. It was nice to think that he might spend a night not thinking about it. The smile fell quite suddenly when she named one of the two mystery brothers, his eyes widening and eyebrows raising. “Richard- Richard? As in Richard with the big business talk and the big bundles of money and the big British accent?” Felix stared at Lottie, slightly in disbelief. The fact that Richard (the man who often talked down to Felix and only truly took interest in him once he realised that he could benefit from Felix’s connection) had been interested in Lottie (someone who when their personalities came together felt similar to a puppy excitedly yapping happily at an identical puppy) simply didn’t add up in the handyman’s head. “...That Richard?”

“Do they?” G asked immediately. She had never really seen anyone in action and teaching, but perhaps…. “My name is a complicated topic I’ve had to deal with my entire life. That’s at least half the reason I use just the initial ‘G’ here. It’s much easier.”
She chuckled. “Do not put that thought in my head! But it is rather creepy in some ways.” She shook her head. “No, I’ve got this,” she said, the statement punctuated by the dull pop of a wine bottle releasing its cork. “It will be ready in a moment.”
“Well, some do. I mean, as far as I know, as long as you’re teachin’ something, you can do it however ya think works.” In fairness, Felix hadn’t seen anyone teaching either, but after listening to Arthur complaining about other tutors teaching methods, he could only assume that they tended to all differ from one another. “I guess you must be pretty famous then?”
Felix gave a small smile. “You’re afraid of critters then, huh? Gigglin’ ghouls, I’m the same. Ain’t nothin’ worse than spottin’ a spider in the corner of ya bathtub.” He flinched at the small pop of the wine bottle and then offered a small nod, turning and walking into the kitchen. “So, what’s been happenin’ in your life recently, Gwen?” he called out as he glanced around the kitchen. “Hopefully good things.”

“So proud,” she replied with a giggle. “Oh no. You and the Prom King broke up?” she asked, vaguely remembering Felix with the older, more serious looking gentleman at the town-wide dance. “What happened?” she inquired, hoping he knew that he could trust her to talk about it. “Of course, that’s very smart. Well, feel free to come grab me if you see him and I’ll try to steer you clear, alright?” she offered, smiling sweetly. “Ain’t it though? The worst part is, I kinda like them both. They’re both so charming and handsome. Richard really seems to get who I am and what I need as a woman, but John is just so bold and unashamed in wanting to get closer to me. If I wasn’t so balled up over the whole thing, I might even be flattered by the two of ‘em.”
Felix puffed out his cheeks at the question, referring to Arthur as ‘the Prom King’ and offering a memory that he had decisively pushed to the back of his mind as of recent events. He shook his head dismissively, wrapping an arm over her shoulder and squeezing her gently. “We ain’t gettin’ into that tonight, Lottery ticket. If ya don’t mind, it’s a whole big story that’ll just bring the mood way down. I’ll talk to ya about it another time. Anywhooo,” Felix gave a soft chuckle, thinking over Lottie’s situation in his head and looking across to her. “That’s quite a pickle, I’m guessin’ ya ain’t exactly got a favourite outta the two then?” He hummed softly, looking back over the crowd. He was pretty curious as to who the two brothers were. Perhaps he could pick them out if they were searching around for the bubbly blonde. “Looks like I ain’t the only one who’s changed. Look at you! Last I saw ya, you were waitin’ for prince charmin’, now you got two fella’s chasin’ ya tail.”

Bea had been there before the doors had opened, hovering excitedly by the entrance. She wasn’t normally this enthusiastic about town events. But this time she had a new hat. A hat no one else would have. A hat with a dead thing on the front. Best of all, it gave her a whole new bubble of personal space that she didn’t really care about but wanted to use for the fun of it at every possible opportunity anyway.
She turned her head to the person beside her, who had breached the invisible border around her by a fraction. “Excuse me. You’re in my hat space,” she declared, motioning at the edge of the rim and drawing a line down - or rather slightly diagonally out, just for good measure. “I mean, I don’t want to fight you. But I will. When you have a hat like this, you’re afforded certain rights and you are breaching those rights.”
“Oh, well, I’m real sorry, Bea. I ain’t meanin’ to pop into ya hat bubble. Ain’t no need for a brawl, I’m sure.” In truth, Felix had trouble keeping his eyes on Bea’s face. He had been staring at the stuffed bird perched atop her hat as soon as she had walked by, and he now found it difficult redirecting his gaze. “That hat’s a real hoot, ma’am. Bumpin’ into it could knock it off, it would fowl to the ground and things could get real hawkward.”

“You? Matured? Why, I am shocked,” she joked, smiling over at him. “I take it there are some familiar faces you could do without seeing here? Come on. Tell Mama Lottie all about it,” she encouraged, giving his arm a gentle, reassuring squeeze. “Kind of got myself mixed up in a sticky situation. You ever accidentally go on a date with the brother of a guy you slept with?”
He feigned a theatrical gasp, “I know, I’ve changed so much!” He gave a soft laugh and then shrugged gently at the question. “My ex.” He admitted freely at first, however, he then checked over the crowd, as if the mere mention of him may make him suddenly appear. “I wouldn’t object too much if he wanted to talk, but I kinda don’t wanna ruin the mood of a happy place like this. I want this to be a fun night for everyone.” Felix blinked a few times, and then raised his hand to his chin, rubbing it gently. “Hm, you know what, I don’t think I have. That, uh, that’s quite a crazy one you got on your hands there, Lottie.”

the-onceandfuture-king:
Arthur stepped back towards the computer and said nothing. Mostly because he wasn’t sure he could speak or even if he did what it would come out sounding like. For possibly the first time in his life, he found himself at a loss for words.
Felix watched the man silently observe the laptop, unmoving and not interacting with it. Just watching it and ignoring him. “...Okay.” Felix turned to leave, turned to walk away and leave Arthur to his own devices, but something stopped him just before the doorway. Oh no, there it was again. The explosion of words that would come flying out of him. He tried his best to hold them back, but in his truest of hearts, he knew he wouldn’t be able to hold it back.
He firmly turned and looked at the other, not expecting him to look back but doing it all the same. “Arthur, I ain’t the biggest fan of how we left things last time. I was upset and angry and frustrated and it was all so-” he shook his head gently. “Well, it doesn’t matter now. I know you don’t wanna talk, and we don’t have to talk, not about anything that happened in that past or nothin’, because, the way things are lookin’ with us, I guess it don’t matter no more. I just…” He sucked in a soft breath and then softly clenched his toolbox within both hands. “I just feel I need to tell you that I want you to be happy. I want you to find a place where you can smile, and relax, and find your ‘happily ever after’. Even if it ain’t with me, even if we never speak or see each other again, even if you hate my guts. I just, I guess, what I want to say, is just,” another soft breath, his tone softening, his pace slowing, and his hands staying still.
“I wish you any and every happiness you can get. Whatever it is, wherever it is, or, uh, whoever it is. If anyone deserves to be happy, I believe, deep down to my core, that it’s you. And I always will.” He left that to linger for a moment, looking at the back of Arthur’s head and then down to the floor. He knew that he needed to say all that. Not just for Arthur, but for himself too. He would feel a constant bearing of guilt if he had never seen Arthur again after their last interaction. So to know that he had wished Arthur every hope and luck that he knew he truly wanted for the other, and as long as he had gotten his truth out there, it would give him a little hope that not everything left between them was toxic. Even if Arthur truly did want misfortune and disconnection for Felix, at least Felix could assure him that he didn’t feel the same in return.
He gave a gentle nod to himself, satisfied that he had said his peace, and then finally turning away and leaving the lecture hall. Alright, he thought to himself, walking away slowly. No more university jobs.

“Well, I’m all outta prince’s then. But, I promise that I’ll certainly keep an eye out for any that come my way and I’ll send them through to you. Swear on my extra life.”

“Well, nice one there. You thought of literally the only problem in the cosmos that could be solved with paper towels. I mean, if you want that to be your superpower then go ahead. But I’m just warning you now, it’s a pretty shit one,” she shrugged and flicked a hand. “My point exactly.”
“I’m pretty sure that ain’t the only problem that could be fixed. I’m sure there’s a thousand and one problems that could be fixed with that.” He scratched his chin softly and thought about it. “Though… I ain’t sure I would want that as a superpower. Maybe if I could make kittens appear in people’s problems, that’d be better.”

“That’s what I’m hoping,” she admitted with a small smile. It was a messy situation, but she had to hope that it would all turn out alright in the end. “Good. I have missed someone other than my roommate to test recipes on,” she told him, her smile growing a bit. Her smile quickly turned into a frown when he explained how he had gone missing. She wasn’t really sure how he could have gone missing for that long and have no recollection of how or why, but it left her uneasy nonetheless. “It sounds like he’s so upset that he doesn’t care why you were gone, just that you were gone. You might want to just give him space, at least until he’s cooled off enough to actually listen to your explanation.”
Felix let out a soft laugh, running a hand down his face gently. “Oh Jellied Jumpsuits, this is when I’m gonna start rollin’ around like a big ol’ chubby ball fulla cake, ain’t I?” He grinned across to the other, letting out another chuckle at the image of it. “That’s sorta what I’m doin’,” he reassured with a gentle nod Though, we sorta left thing’s on real angry terms. I feel like I said things I sure didn’t mean, seein’ as I was just upset. I wish…” He trailed off, looking over to Anya and then puffing out his cheeks, giving an embarrassed huff. “Woah, I’m real sorry, ma’am, I ain’t tryin’ to unload all this onto your shoulders- you came here to have a whole peaceful time in ya cubby corner in the library, and I’m just-” he laughed, shaking his head softly. “Sounds like we both got our problems with rememberin’ things in the past though, huh?”

G shrugged. “Thank you,” she said. “I can’t say I’ve ever considered it as a profession. I have some trouble sitting still. But maybe, if what you’re saying is true, I should.”
Instead of just shrugging, she waved off his apology. “No, it’s fine. I wasn’t insulted. I was just letting you know where I stand. It sounds like we’re in similar territory regardless.” She reached out and gave his arm a squeeze. “Very well. That’s all something you can deal with after wine and rest, though.” She pointed toward the kitchen. “Thank you! You’re welcome to look down the hall there while I get our wine. It’s not a large place, but it’s just me who lives here.”
“I mean, who’s to say you’d have to sit still.” Felix offered with a small grin. “People who teach kinda do it all differently. Or, well, so it seems at least. I’m real sure you’d find a good way of teachin’ people. Even if it’s just teachin’ them how to say ya name.”
He offered the woman a thin smile, small but grateful for her kindness. “Faith and Religion is all sorta new to me. It seems sorta nice in some ways. But, also sorta terrifyin’ beyond the likes of the creepy critters crawlin’ under ya bed.” Felix looked in the direction that she had pointed and gave a soft nod. “Sure thing. Anythin’ I can help with at all?”

“I am sure, if anything, I will be thanking you for the suggestion,” she assured, smiling over at him. When they arrived at the coffee shop, they walked inside, Belle sighing contently at the smell that hit them when they did so. “I may prefer tea over coffee, but something about this smell is so pleasant.”
“Oh, ma’am, I really understand that. I’m much more into them sickly sweet hot cocoa’s they have in here, but every time I smell those coffee beans doin’ their work, I swear, somethin’ feels all homely and, just right.”
