In middle school, twenty (!?) years ago, I was told that I “don’t have friends, I have people that feel sorry for me”. This was allowed to take real roots in 2020 & 2022 with two people I considered very close friends. I’d found out that these friends had been belittling me behind my back, in the latter case our entire friendship.

I know that this isn’t true, but when you’re alone at 1:00 in the morning it sure feels real.
