My brother in law is a really soft-spoken, quiet dude. Like in social situations with more than 3 people, he barely speaks up to the group at large.

Instead, he murmurs comments and jokes into my sister's ear, quiet enough that only she can hear him. The only way anybody else will know he even said anything is if she randomly bursts out laughing (and if we're lucky, she'll relay the joke to the rest of us).

Anyway, Andrew whispering insane commentary and dry jokes into Neil's ear during Fox movies nights... Neil randomly snickering while all the other Foxes look on like "???"

andrew's smart. andrew's so fucking smart. after baltimore, he's given twenty minutes, so he speaks in german to neil first, to isolate the conversation, to get the information he needs to assess the situation. then, he switches back to english so that the foxes can understand and rally behind him. he uses them and their aggressive loyalty to their own– loyalty that andrew understands better than most– to outnumber the fbi agents and gain the collective upper hand. the foxes love a fight. the foxes are born to fight and they live fighting. andrew uses that part of them exactly when he needs to because that's what he has to do to keep neil with them. and it fucking works.

So since mxtx has said that in novel canon nie huaisang is eventually going to end up being chief cultivator we can presume the headshaker thing, while based on his existing personality, was in fact an act and he is way more competent at his job than he's let on. And with Jin Guangyao dead and gone he has no reason to put on that act anymore.

Imagine being an Nie cultivator. Your flopppy incompetent sect leader comes home from traumatic events after it turns out his older brother's sworn brother- who's been over to your sect basically every other week for years now- is the one that killed said brother and you're fully prepared for tears and dramatics. And while you definitley don't like lianfang-zun since it just came out he killed your last (way more competent) sect leader he was sorta the one holding the sect together so you're bracing yourself for the worst, and instead he's... stoic? Paperwork is suddenly getting done well and on time without help. He's not wailing during negotiations anymore and you're getting actual good trade deals for the first time in over a decade. He answers questions now? With something other than "I don't know i don't know i really don't know!"

And even if you had none of the revelations wei wuxian had in guanyin temple, slowly the realization creeps up on you that all his earlier embarassing antics that cost your family their comfortable livelihoods and your sect their good name was on purpose. And from there it's not that hard to put two and two together. The rest of the cultivation world assumes the shock of jin guangyao's betrayal has finally forced the headshaker to grow up a little but you have worked side by side with him for a decade, probably even watched him grow up under his brother's rule. You know better.

How do you feel at that point? What can you even do? He's your sect leader. And he's finally doing his job, things are looking up, shouldn't you feel relieved? It' not like his incompetence really caused any deaths among the nie, just wiped out generational wealth and reputation that will take years and years to build back up. Is it really reasonable to only start hating someone for something when they've stopped doing it? Thereby proving that they were capable of stopping all along?

Why do we minimize the trauma from some os the foxes past?

Aaron was abused by his mother. He and Matt were introduced to drugs by one of his parents

Nicky had homophobic parents and he was sent to a conversion camp. He almost killed himself.

Dan had to take care of her (probably abusive) aunt, and cousins.

Allison was disinherited.

Seth was an addict.

Kevin lived in a cult for most of his life.

I will probably expand each one of this.

AFTG AU Fic Idea: Dark Academia. Fanart Idea.

I can easily picture Neil, using his original birth name, with his fiery red hair being slightly curly, his crystal blue eye sharp and cold (unless he is looking at Andrew, after they've become close in this AU) a lot more scars than mentioned in Canon, his past still the same but some change of details maybe and much worse. Also having lots of tattoos and piercings.

Nathaniel dressed in suave, fine, black clothing, or any rich like clothing but mostly sticking to black and kinda snug, showing off a fit body, and he has a British accent. He has a side or maybe secret hobby of singing, or whatever else, maybe in this AU he likes reading.

Hot and deadly, wickedly beautiful even with all his scars and tattoos, and piercings, they just accentuate his looks and he is a BAMF, and with a whole vibe and kinda popular, though some people are afraid of him because of his scars and tattoos and how menacing his aura can be. And when he grins his wicked, hot grin, you see white teeth, and little canine teeth (no not like a vampire, some people have sharp canine like teeth, on the top row, kinda like small fangs. I kinda do but mine are dull compared to few other people I've seen, honestly to me this just adds to his hot but dark vibe).

I have a vivid image of him lying on a beautiful and big lush dark couch, with his wicked grin, Andrew sitting on the floor beside him, back against the couch, with his head resting on Nathaniel's thigh, and Nathaniel has his hand resting on Andrews head, fingers curled gently in his hair. Chandeliers hang high above them, with some dark old fashioned candles lit as well.

I really really want someone to draw this scene for me 😭 it would mean the world to me.

I love how throughout the whole series there's a little of Neil and a little of Nathaniel pov. It's not that visible if you don't make an effort to look for it but it's there. And it's not just the Baltimore scenes. Neil is all the things that are new to Nathaniel, he's everything Nathaniel didn't know about himself and throughout the books he starts becoming more and more real. And Nathaniel is all the survival instincts, is all the times he got the urge to run. Neil is Andrew and keys and Foxes. Nathaniel is fear, paranoia and survival.
