things that happened to me when i was a woman in STEM:
an advisor humiliated me in front of an entire lab group because of a call I made in his place when he wouldn't reply to my e-mails for months
he later delegated part of my master's thesis work to a 19-year old male undergrad without my approval
a male scientist at a NASA conference looked me up and down and asked when i was graduating and if i was open to a job at his company. right before inquiring what my ethnicity was because i "looked exotic"
a random male member of the public began talking over me and my female advisor, an oceanographer with a pHD and decades of experience, saying he knew more about oceanography than us
things that have happened to me since becoming a man in STEM:
being asked consistently for advice on projects despite being completely new to a position
male colleagues approaching me to drop candid information regarding our partners / higher ups that I was not privy to before
lenience toward my work in a way I haven't experienced before. incredible understanding when I need to take time off to care for my family.
conference rooms go silent when I start talking. no side chatter. I get a baseline level of attention and focus from people that's very unfamiliar and genuinely difficult for me to wrap my head around.
like. yes some PI's will still be assholes regardless of the gender of their subordinates but, I've lived this transition. misogyny in STEM is killing women's careers, and trans men can and do experience male privilege.

"how do you tell the difference between a whippet and an italian greyhound" simple. look at it head on. if it looks like a dog it's a whippet. if it's making a face like you've just threatened it with a firearm, it's an iggy

i miss when "don't normalize this" actually meant something. i miss when we would point out toxic thought patterns and note "you're romanticizing something tragic". i miss when you could actually call something antifeminist and you'd be taken seriously. what actually happened.
no, it isn't fucking normal we have teen girls saying "tee hee girl math girl dinner i'm just a girl." no it's not fucking romantic that your man lured you away from your hobbies and your career so you could raise his children and rely on his financial support. yes it's fucking antifeminist for you to say "i'll explain this mathematical concept so the girls can understand it". just because you put it in pink and make it wear a bow doesn't mean it's a safe little doll. it's still the same wolf.
you are being taught to casually accept gender essentialism and bigotry as the natural rule of order! you are being taught to self-admonish and self-control! you are not just being boiled! the water has practically evaporated! this is no longer a thought experiment, my love. this is a genuine problem.

they could have said, like, "we made a new wolf morph, which shows how far genetic science has advanced". they could have said, "we're calling them direwolves out of a love for the extinct species." maybe too much to ask for but would have loved it if they'd pointed out some kind of ecological niche they were theoretically intent on resolving - like, "wolves are having trouble adapting to human sprawl and we are hoping that our research into the past will help us save wolves in the present."
but alas they did not do this. and see this sucks because i want to be hype about new bigass fantasy wolves. there is a 7th grade version of me that would be ecstatic about this. she would be obsessive.
unfortunately, due to capitalism, now i gotta have beef with puppies. can you imagine.

Trans girls will do anything except go to bed at a reasonable hour.
We’ll lie in bed staring at the ceiling, scrolling through old messages, overanalyzing every compliment we’ve ever received like they’re sacred texts. We’ll sit in front of the mirror at 2 AM, whispering sweet affirmations to our reflection, testing out new names under our breath just to see how they feel.
We’ll get lost in the glow of our screens, reading sapphic love stories, fantasizing about a world where we don’t have to explain ourselves—where a girl calls us hers without hesitation, without doubt. We’ll try on that one perfect outfit in the dead of night, twirling in the dim light of our room, feeling beautiful in a way we never let ourselves during the day.
We’ll stay up because sleep means letting go, and we’re not ready for that. Not when there’s still so much of ourselves to discover, to claim. Not when the night feels like the only time we can be unapologetically us.
Or maybe, just maybe, we’re staying up because we know she’s awake too. Somewhere out there, another restless trans girl is doing the same thing—scrolling, dreaming, waiting. And if we reach out, if we’re bold enough to send that late-night message, maybe we’ll both have a reason to sleep a little easier.
But not yet. Not tonight. There’s still too much to want, too much to feel.
And besides, who needs sleep when we could be whispering our deepest desires into the quiet of the night, where no one but the stars can hear?
