My dear lgbt+ kids, 

I want to send a hug to everyone who feels like they’re out and in the closet at the same time. 

It sounds like a contradiction but there are a lot of situations that may lead to those confusing feelings: 

Maybe you never really had “the big talk” with your parents but you don’t exactly hide your identity, either - and by now it feels wrong to dramatically come out to them because they probably already know but it also feels wrong to never talk about it. 

Or maybe you did come out to them but they just shrugged it off and you have no idea if that’s because they’re cool with it or if they hope it will go away if they never mention it again. 

You could feel this way, too, if you are out to some people in your life and not out to others (for example, you’re out at home but not at school, or your friends know but not your family). You may feel like you’re living a “double life” and constanly have to adjust your behavior, censor yourself - depending on who you are with and who might listen. 

It can really sap your energy. It takes a lot of strength to deal with these kinds of insecurity, not really knowing where you stand. 

It can even make it hard to relate to other lgbt+ people - our community seems to be neatly divided in “in the closet” and “out and proud”, you may feel out of place in both of those groups. 

Please know that it’s not your fault and you are not doing it wrong. Life is not as clear cut as movies often portray it. There’s a lot of grey inbetween “out” and “closet” - and there are lots of people living in the grey!
