book recs for jwcc/jwct fans!
Hi, for all of my fellow dinonerds and book-lovers, I decided to put together a short list of book recommendations, inspired by jwcc and jwct! I tried to divide it into sections, so hopefully everyone will find something right up their alley!
What you will find under the cut:
a mix of children's books, YA, and adult books
stand-alones, book series, and manga
fantasy, romance, adventure, horror, and mystery
the "if you like this character, you may end up enjoying this book"
just a bunch of books worth checking out!
Each book's description is followed by tags to help you get a gist of what may await you!
Found family + dangerous adventure:
The Mysterious Benedict Society (Trenton Lee Stewart)
Tells a story about a gifted group of kids who, by eccentric Mr. Benedict's doing, must enroll in a special school to save the world from being brainwashed by Mr. Benedict's evil twin. The kids must learn to trust and rely on each other, or else their mission will fail spectacularly.
The Mysterious Benedict Society is a quartet, and I especially recommend (The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey) in which the kids must set off on a great and dangerous adventure across the world.
Genre, tags: children's book (Loved it even in my teens tho), adventure, found family, mystery
Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun series (AidaIro)
Our main character – Nene – summons one of the school ghosts – Hanako-kun – and finds herself becoming her assistant. Together they fight evil spirits, cross the thin line between human and magical realm, discover secrets of the past, make new friends, and... fall in love a little bit.
If you're looking for a long series about an unlikely friendship with a lot of paranormal stuff going on, plenty of humor, lovable characters, and a sprinkle of romance – this is for you.
Genre and tags: YA (on the younger side), fantasy, paranormal, found family, mystery, very very slow burn
Horror:
When Ghosts Call Us Home (Katya de Becerra)
The entire book revolves around the idea of an analog-horror movie going viral. The movie was recorded by a teen (Layla) and starred her younger sister (Sophie), and took place in their old house. Years later, Layla disappears, and Sophie must go back to their haunted house to find out what happened to her sister and face her own past.
Genre, tags: YA, mystery, gothic horror, thriller, paranormal
The Twisted Ones (T. Kingfisher)
The 'oh-there's-something-in-the-woods' book. If you really liked jwcc season 3, I think you may really enjoy it. It's plenty spooky, full of suspense, and gives you chills. Best to pick it up with as little prior knowledge as possible.
Genre, tags: Horror, Adult, Mystery
Darius:
Jurassic Park (Michael Crichton)
A millionaire brings dinosaurs back from the dead. Surely nothing will go wrong?
(Just read it. This book is a terrifying adventure on its own.)
Genre, tags: Adult, Thriller, Horror
Legendborn (The Legendborn Cycle series) (Tracy Deonn)
When Bree's mother dies, she has to learn how to live in the world without her. Starting a new life at UNC–Chapel Hill seems good enough. Little does Bree know that she's about to discover a whole new world – rooted in ancient magic, mystery, and... seemingly tied up to her mother's death.
Genre, tags: YA, fantasy, mystery, adventure
Kenji:
The Raven Boys series (Maggie Stiefvater)
A story about a bunch of boys going to a prestigious school and... haunting a dead Welsh king. Plot twist? One of these boys is supposed to die very soon, as predicted by one Blue Sargent – a daughter of a local psychic.
This series is messy, mysterious, and smells simultaneously like a rich cologne and dark woods.
Genre, tags: YA, found family, mystery, daddy issues sprinkled all over the place
Most Ardently (Gabe Cole Novoa)
A story about feeling like you don't live up to your family's (and society's) expectations and also – a story about love. Kenji is romantic, therefore, he gets a romance okay? okay Pride and Prejudice retelling
Genre, tags: YA, romance, historical fiction, LGBT+
Ben:
Eragon (The Inheritance Cycle series) (Christopher Paolini)
A boy finds a dragon egg, and his life changes forever. It's a newer-gen fantasy classic for a reason. The story is about so much more than adventure – it's about growing up with a friend like no other.
Genre, tags: YA, high fantasy, adventure, dragons
Cemetery Boys (Aiden Thomas)
"Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can’t get rid of him."
A story about self-acceptance, self-growth, friendship and romance, and a little bit about bringing back the dead.
Genre, tags: YA, urban fantasy, paranormal LGBT+
Brooklynn:
Truly, Devious (Truly Devious series) (Maureen Johnson)
Stevie Bell arrives at the Ellingham Academy with one goal: to solve a crime that happened years ago. Things start to get more and more complicated when, soon after her arrival, a new murder happens, and this time the threat is more tangible and much more personal.
Genre and tags: YA, mystery, thriller, dark academia vibes
A Master of Djinn (P. Djèlí Clark)
Fatma el-Sha’arawi is work-driven, passionate, and ready to get-to-the-bottom of each case. In a world where the veil between the magical and mundane world is opened, she is ready to discover who is responsible for the murder of a secret brotherhood dedicated to the very man who let magic into human world.
Genre and tags: Adult, Historical, Fantasy, Steampunk, Mystery
Sammy:
The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea (Axie Oh)
A legend says that to appease the Sea God, each year the village must sacrifice a young girl by throwing her into the sea. When Mina's older sister gets chosen, Mina is having none of that and decides to sacrifice herself. She falls into a fantasy world that introduces her to as many wonders as it does to terrors.
Genre, tags: YA, fantasy, romance
I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter (Erika L. Sánchez)
The death of Julia's older sister breaks their family into pieces. All Julia can do is try to mend what's broken, even though no one seems to notice that Julia is left hurting and bleeding too.
Olga – Julia's older sister – was perfect but... was she really? As the story unfolds, Julia starts to learn more and more about her past sister.
Genre, tags: YA, contemporary, grief, coming of age
Yaz:
Carrie Soto is Back (Taylor Jenkins Reid)
A story about a legendary retired tennis player who is too stubborn for her own good. When Soto's record is threatened, she decides to make a comeback and take back her crown.
The story is really about growing as a person and familial conflict, and love.
Genre, tags: Adult, Sports, Contemporary, Historical Fiction
The guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy At All series (Sumiko Arai)
"The green lesbian manga" – Aya falls in love with a mysterious guy who works at a local music store. Little does she know that this "guy" is actually her shy and a little awkward female classmate – Mitsuki
Genre, tags: YA, romance, cute misunderstandings, LGBT
If you scrolled this far – it would mean a lot to me if you reblogged. If you have any other recommendations – feel free to share!
If you're looking for a specific book rec (e.g. a book that I would assign to Soyona or to a specific episode) – my inbox and dms are open!

my take on the miss piggy/morticia addams sexywoman poll is that while morticia would lose gracefully, miss piggy would 1000% attempt murder over the label and morticia would respect her for it. then theyd go out for tea and gossip together
