Shopgirl
Mirabelle is introduced early as a woman who works the glove section of a Neiman’s department store.  She spends most of her days, “leaning against the the glass case with one leg cocked behind her and her arms splayed outward, resting on her palms against the countertops.”  She is a sad, shy, and lonely girl who wishes for true love and a meaning in life, “The depression she battles is not the newly acquired symptom of a young woman…”  She is full of regrets, such as wishing she had put her fine arts degree from California College to better usage. Mirabelle also years for true love.  Mirabelle meets a millionaire named Ray Porter who is clearly afraid of commitment but is particularly fond of her.  Ray introduces himself to Mirabelle by asking her out to dinner while she is working.  She agrees, which was very out of character, to a date at a Beverly Hills Italian restaurant on Sunday.  To avoid this essay from transitioning into a summary of the novella, the rest of Roy and Mirabelles relationship went on accordingly.  Mirabelle fell for Roy but was becoming much too reliant on him, especially since he was not looking for any serious commitments.
When Mirabelle separates from Ray, it forces her to look inward.  She quits her reception job at Neiman’s and decides to pursue her dream.  Losing Ray (also Lisa’s actions) allowed her to realize how reliant she was and helped her make the decision to focus on herself.  She then was able to mature enough to make the decision to follow what and who she really wanted. Jeremy is introduced in the second chapter as an uninspired and lazy roadie.  “Jeremy took Mirabelle on approximately two and a half dates,” Can describe their early relationship perfectly.  Jeremy was very immature and made their dates ver awkward for the both of them.  All-in-all, Jeremy was pretty irrelevant throughout aside from his return later in the story after self-evaluating himself and maturing. Jeremy approaches Mirabelle correctly this time and eventually they start to date.  Mirabelle learns true happiness with herself and is finally self-aware.
