One of my favorite things about early fall out boy is the way they juxtapose the extreme darkness and despair of their lyrics against a childlike background, and none of their albums do that so well as infinity. Like you have under the cork tree being named after Ferdinand the bull, and all of Pete's obsession with Peter Pan and Where the Wild Things and Nightmare before Christmas - and you can kind of see where it comes from there. All of those stories are aimed at children, but all of them can be almost macabre at times. Infinity is where it SHINES, though, in the packaging and the way it was marketed. The child's bedroom on the cover, the dreamy, nursery-rhyme like feel of the packaging, the winged sheep and the paper moon. The tarot cards and the warm colors.

And then, the songs off infinity are SO dark. It's such a voyeuristic album, inviting you to listen and then condemning you for doing so. It's pete saying fuck you, watch me bleed for your own entertainment, and then turning around and saying you can trust me BECAUSE I'm bleeding for you. The narrator has this incredibly compelling amount of self hatred and self obsession in turn, but somehow it's deeply relatable instead of off-putting. (I am Gods gift but why would he bless me with such wit without a conscience equipped?) He sings explicitly about knowing he's a wreck but hes avoiding getting better because people will stop looking at him. It's a brutally honest, cynical record.

It's an album about an artists dissatisfaction with his own work and industry and failed suicide attempt named by an artist who was never recognized and did kill himself, but despite that, the van gogh quote it takes it's name for is one of the most hopeful things I've ever heard. "Be clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high. Then life seems almost enchanted after all." Without that whimsy, without the paper moon and stars, you wouldn't have infinity on high. That juxtaposition of wonder and despair is one of the most important things in the world to me.
