What the hairstyles mean

Hey guys, because I am obviously way too invested in this manhwa I did a bit of googling about ancient Korean hair styles. I thought it was interesting in the context of this manhwa to see what the characters’ appearances may signify/symbolize.

Seungho and the other nobles have a topknot hairstyle called a ‘sangtu’ as well as a headgear called ‘manggeon’. Typically it is the nobles or scholars who have this hairstyle. It is a symbol of their higher standing as well as a sign of manhood.

Meanwhile, lower class men and servants may have a topknot called a ‘minsangtu’ and they do not wear the same headgear ‘manggeon’.

What’s interesting to note is that in ancient times hair was symbolic of your heritage and to have your hair cut off was considered deeply shameful as it would mean disrespecting one’s ancestors. With this in mind, I just wanted to highlight a few points mentioned in the manhwa so far. This is part of the reason why the nobles who were involved with Seungho were so appalled when Seungho would drag them by their topknot. On top of physical assault, Seungho is showing the other nobles just how lowly he thinks of them. There is mention of Seungho’s father having cut off Seungho’s topknot in the past. On top of what we already know to be a strained relationship within the Yoon family, it seems that the falling out certainly involved great shame between father and son.

And I saved my main point for the end, but in regard to Nakyum having short hair, I thought that there is a dual symbolism there. While it is true that Nakyum is of a lower class, there are still many servants who have a topknot in the style of minsangtu throughout the manhwa. The deliberate choice by the author to give Nakyum short hair is likely to emphasise that 1) he is still very young and naive (as having a topknot is a sign of manhood) and 2) that Nakyum is an abandoned orphan who has no ties to his heritage.

On that note, I wonder (and hope) that at some point in the plot perhaps Nakyum’s origins could be revealed...it would be very interesting to see what his background might be.
