Protest Projects

     This week my classmates and I were required to do projects that were about protest or advocacy. We also had the chance to present in front of the class about what we chose for a topic that we could’ve either protested or advocated for. Everyone had such great ideas and I’m even more anxious to know about the others that haven’t presented yet. The project that I enjoyed the most and was persuaded by the most was Simone’s project. I was most persuaded by her project because her topic was very different than anyone else’s and she was very knowledgeable about what she was protesting. Simone spoke about the endangerment of different animal species. She spoke about the animals that are extinct and she spoke about the animals that were almost extinct. Her symbol that she used for her project was very creative as well and it was hard to understand at first but with explanation and my understanding it was very original and I was moved by it. I haven’t heard about animals in a long time so when I found out that her project was about that I was automatically pulled in and hooked by what she was saying. The pollution and greenhouse gases play a huge role in their survival but invasive species also play a huge role in their existence. The strongest presentation that took place was Jess’s. Jess spoke about having gender neutral bathrooms. She really spoke about transgender and their choices of which bathroom to go into confidentially. In my opinion her protest project was the strongest because it caused the most chatter in the classroom. Everyone had their own opinion of course but it was interesting to see what everyone had to say about the topic and how they felt about gender neutral bathrooms. Lastly, the project that made me changed my mind on the topic was about student athletes being paid while they play on their school team. At first I wasn’t for it at all but when it was explained it seemed fair. These are students who work just as hard as any regular non-athlete student they should be offered that opportunity. They aren’t academically talented they are physically built and trained to play the sport that they do well in now. Regular students have the chance to get scholarships by any school but not every athlete does for when they go off to college.

Gender Roles

When I was first introduced to the word gender I didn’t think that it would have such an enormous impact on the world that it does today. For so long I was convinced that gender only dealt with the factor of an individual’s scientific makeup. As soon as I came to college I learned quickly that I was taught incorrectly, because that is not what it is at all. Gender is an individual’s way of identifying themselves. During the past couple of weeks, the class has been assigned a comic strip as a reading assignment and it spoke mainly about the gender roles in movies amongst other reasons. In class, we also spoke about how that could apply in society and that allowed me to really think about the way the gender roles are depicted in society. “I only go to a movie if it satisfies three basic requirements. One, it has to have at least two women in it who, two, talk to each other about, three, something besides a man.” (Bechdel, A, 1985, The rule) This was written as one of the lines used in the comic strip. One of the characters was voicing how she felt about movies that are made to be sexist so she came up with a rule that could prevent her from seeing those kinds of movies. We also spoke about this in class and an example that came up was a movie about what could happen in movies. Two women know each other, they speak to each other, but every single time they do speak they only speak about how much they hate their boss who happens to be a man. We spoke about how this could relate in society. We spoke about how gender roles play such a huge role in society and how they are looked at and how people are supposed to live up to them. The real and hard core truth about all of this is that one cannot tell someone else how to be a girl or how to be a boy because we all have different standards of what it is to be those things.  It is crucial that we come together and can see that things don’t always have to be so black and white. The standard societal views don’t have to be standard anymore. The gender roles that society has placed in the media and what we learn in life can’t be so vaguely seen and people should have widened their horizons.

Blog 8: Which Blog is the Best?

After reading the posts that I did I think that all of them were very good but there was only one post where I was able to relate to it completely. The post that spoke about Gender Roles spoke the most to me. I liked that post that was written because it related closely with what I wanted to speak about in my blog. I really have a huge issue with double standards and I don't appreciate the fact that it's acceptable for men to do certain things but when woman commit the same actions as men they're reprimanded for it.

I never thought to consider that the rest of the world needed as much attention as the United States. On the other hand I think it's fair to say that I've never really been concerned with what happens outside of the U.S. I've never thought on that level because I thought that if it doesn't effect me in anyway then why should I care. After reading this I do understand the importance of being aware of what happens around us. It keeps us aware and also lets us avoid future issues that could occur in other countries. if they can not be avoided then they can be resolved formally and it well handled manner.

What we should talk about in class

One topic that I think deserves and needs our attention is what is going on in other parts of the world. I think its easy to keep up with American news and what is going on here, but little do we know about how the other parts of the world are living.  For instance, did you know that in Orly Airport in Paris, a man was shot when he tried taking the gun of a soldier?  Or Brazilian meat packers have been selling rotten meat worldwide? Knowing what is happening outside our country is very important.  A story that caught my attention is the UK sending troops to Estonia to deter Russian aggression.

           As part of the Nato agreement and to protect them, all the UK is trying to is place a defense.  There obviously is some kind of Russian threat if they feel it is needed. An army presence will at least keep Russia from thinking it can do what it wants.  It is the largest UK deployment from the UK since the Cold War apparently.  Everywhere in the world there is a need for military.  We live in a day and age where if we don’t build our defenses and prepare for the worst, it could end very badly for us.  It isn’t just the US that is increasing its spending on military, but Russia, China, and the United Kingdom are also.  Its sad that we have to, but its better to protect America and the free world from evil and oppression from other countries that want to hard us.

In other news, Turkey has warned the EU that it will open its borders and let refugees cross out of Turley into the rest of Europe.  The EU wouldn’t let Turkey join them and for that reason they are mad.  They even told the refugees, “make not three, but five children because you are the future of Europe.   That is the best response to injustices against you.”  Why does Turkey think that letting migrants push into Europe is a way of getting back at them?  There are big problems happening in Europe right now and the issue wont end any time soon.

           Europe is in chaos right now.  I think its good that we educate ourselves to know exactly what is happening so we can formulate our own world-views.  American news can sometimes distort or out an “agenda” that they want the American people to listen to.  I think its important that we all go above that and form our own opinions and we can all do that by reading world news stories and find out what exactly is happening outside the US.  That is why I think we should talk about this in class more.  We can all benefit immensely I believe.

As I read this I thought that it was so descriptive and also very original. I was able to visualize the car cash and being able to relate tot something so real. I think that occurs with everyone though, I think it's more than possible for someone to only realize what's truly happening until they're in the situation. The thought that there is a program that allows you to experience these events is spectacular and absolutely something to look into when looking for Police experience in a sense. It is more than inspiring to see that there are programs to help improve and make the youth excited about possible future careers.

Bog 6 ride along’s

So this blog is our choice, Finally. I’m going to do this blog about our own topic. Normally its something we have to research. I’m going to talk about the two ride along with the Buffalo police. The cop i went on the ride along with is also my aunt. Ride along’s are not what everyone thinks they are. They don’t contain trips to the gun range or crazy police shootings. The consist primarily of riding in the cruiser taking bullshit calls to pass the 10 hour shift. Most calls aren’t like they are on TV there isn’t shootings or stabbings every ten minutes. It’s actually rare if there is a call every ten minutes at night. Well maybe its different in the summer but in winter its slow. The calls i went were pretty much nothing crazy but ill never forget the first scene we went to. It was way out of our district but since it was my first time we were allowed to venture to the area. It was a bad car crash like really bad. There was about 5 people in the car two of which were little girls. Thankfully they made it out OK. I cant say as much for the people in the drivers seat because 1, the car hit a house. 2, there was these two spots or cracks in the windshield where their heads collided with it. At this point I’m as close to the car as i am to this laptop typing this blog. That’s when it hit me. “This is real” i thought. Back at the station house one of the other officers gave me their back up flashlight to use just in case i needed one. While at the crash scene i couldn’t let go of it. I gripped it to keep reminding myself that this is real life now, not some TV show, These people seriously might not make it. I’m still not sure of their outcome. After that it was pretty slow besides one case that lasted the majority of the night, So while were out driving around we got a call to a gun issue. Normally those consist of someone with a gun being aggressive or along those lines. Only when we got on scene there wasn’t a guy with a gun just a family of 3 standing outside waiting for us. They told us that he had abducted his baby mamma. So I’m like Oh shit it just got real. For about 6 hours we all are driving around until his phone is pinged in the same place for ten minutes. All cops on patrol that night rushed to the scene of his location. After some talking we found him at a bar down the road. He had already brought his baby mamma home. So we arrested him. The thing about TV is that the cops there read the Miranda rights on arrest. That’s actually not how its done. So until those rights are read to you when you ask for a lawyer, Anything you say is admissible in court. Here’s the good part. The officer who drove him to the station heard him say, while in the cruiser, “Its only a fucking pellet gun. You cant charge me with anything.” That right there is how he is now doing time. That;s pretty much the highlight of both ride along’s besides the shooting i went to but that’s for a different story. The other calls we received were only small things like over doses and drunk assholes. Those nights are by far some of the best nights of my life. I can not wait to be a cop myself.

While reading this, I could relate a great deal because I feel the same way tat  you do. It's not fair to be held to such a high standard when you're still only human, like everyone else. I noticed that when I was reading what was being said, I felt degraded and insulted as a woman. It's not a woman's job to constantly cook and clean. Just because a woman can do household obstacles it doesn't that she's means to do as such. Women are so capable of doing so much and more than what is expected of them.

Blog 7-Gender Roles

Something that I would love for us to talk about in class is about the importance of gender roles. I say we talk about clarifying gender roles because this one time my friend, she’s a girl, she wanted help with her homework and I said I will help her. She sent a screenshot of this little short story about the gender roles.

When reading this short story, on top of the paper it said “Definition/Clarifying Gender Roles”, I really liked it and it caught my attention. The story is about how a man wants his wife to be just for use like she some kind of material or toy. Whoever the narrator was, I disliked him. Me, as a man, I would not ever want to treat my wife like his description of a wife.

He described how when he has friends over, he wanted his wife to have made babysitting arrangements. He also mentioned how he wanted his wife to keep the house clean. I don’t disagree with that but where I grew up, I can’t just depend on my wife, I also help to help her out doing chores. The narrator also said that while his friends are over, he wants his wife to have the children to bed so that they don’t interrupt them but he also says he doesn’t want his wife to wife to interrupt him and his friend.

The narrator wants a wife who will just be a sex machine in bed. He doesn’t want his wife to ask for sex when he is not in the mood for it. The two things that he said that pissed me off is when he said that he should be able to replace the present wife if he finds another suitable wife. He said the wife would have to deal with the children. The other thing he said was that when he finishes with his school and gets a job, he wants his wife to stay home and not work and just do wife duties.

I really think that we should read this short story. I also understand that there are actually wives that have to deal with husband like that and it sad like I don’t understand why you would marry someone and then just use them like they’re machines. But I think this would an interesting topic to talk about in class and I would love to hear everyone opinion on it in class. The Name Game: Blog 7

     Thinking about what I should write about for this blog post I was a little clueless. I began to really think about what gets me going and what topics truly make me want to change how things are. Of all the topics that I could think of at moment, I think that the workplace and how people are employed plays a huge role in society. It makes an impact on how we think of society as a sum. When thinking about what it takes to be employed one would think that being qualified would be enough. We all grow up on the idea that going to school and getting good grades, being involved with the school and community, having a positive attitude, and excelling in college would make you a shoe in for any job that is out there. Right? Wrong. As I have learned while growing up, people are always judged. People will judge you no matter what and that’s something that needs to be accepted. Judgment is instilled in everyone. On the other hand, there is a line that must be drawn.      Of course, in the workplace there is supposed to be a level of judgement being used when hiring people. As an employer one would want to see who is truly qualified and what does a person need to have as a quality to bring something new to the working environment. Unfortunately, that’s not how things are being done. When employers are looking for their employees there is a great deal of them who have taken it upon themselves to judge the people that applied for the job by their name. It is said that the people who apply for jobs may be able to get the job or not because of their name. For example, my name is original and not too many people have if my resume were to come up there is a possibility that employers could make the inference that I could be another nationality than white. But if “Amanda Richards” were to come up it may be even looked at as a candidate to work for that employer. Since her name is more generic and common it must indicate that she could possibly be white. Is this fair? Is there really some truth behind what is being done in the workplace? We need to be way more aware of situations and of people who think that doing what they did was correct. If you benefited from being employed based off your name or not how would you feel? All those years of believing that being a positive factor of society, and doing well in school would really get you to the place you want to be in life. Turns out all you need is your name to get a head start in the workplace.

Greater Purpose

Everybody has those moments in their lives where they feel like The world is on their shoulders and God isn't on their side. As of recently I've been in that kind of state of mind, currently. Instead of complaining though, I would like to say that trusting in the powers of God and believing that everything is in his control then there's nothing to worry about. God has so much to do with our lives and futures and there's times that we make certain actions or choices forgetting that he's there. Due to the fact that I was placed on this earth by God, I strongly believe that I was placed here for a purpose. Although I'm really not sure as to what that purpose is I do believe it is a positive one and it is one that make a difference in everybody's lives. God has placed each and every single one of us to fulfill a purpose that he has planned for us. Why not branch out, why not read that book for your class, why not spend that extra hour in the library, why not try to be the absolute best version of yourself. Even though we go through hard times we always have to keep this mentality. We need to remember that even though I may go through obstacles, I need to keep in mind that God is working to make me a better me and I have to do the same and fulfill his purpose. There are three things that everyone should remember when in working ok themselves to be the best. Pain is only temporary but success is forever. There's so many things that have been placed on this earth we should enjoy it and appreciate it. Lastly, we should always aim to be good hearted people. Remembering that pain is only temporary can allow you to keep in mind what ur goal really is and to not allow anything else to get in the way of that goal. Helps you to keep focus of what you want. We should also open up and appreciate the amazing views, sights, and even the beautiful people that come in our lives. They have also been placed there or you to be aware that there is great things that have been done by others, amazing things created by others, it's great to take into account to that. Finally remaining good-hearted allows people to help others be amazing. In a way this reminds me of the Good Samaritan. If you ever see someone is in trouble or needs a hand with something then you shouldn't turn your back on them. Altogether we all have a purpose on this earth and we should appreciate the little things and people that are there to help us get tot he point of succes where we need to be.

I enjoyed reading about Barack Obama even though this is someone that is constantly spoken about in history. I liked how you opened up the post. Introducing Barack Obama the way you did allowed me to hear your voice in your writing. Being able to pick up on the authors voice in their writing is important to me because I think that if the reader is able to read things and imagine you saying it and still be able to understand what you want to talk about is crucial in writing and creative. Altogether this post was extremely informative and it allowed me to get an even BETTER idea as to who Obama is.

Blog4: Black history month

February is a very good month because it helps us people remember all of the times african american people helped the united states. There are many important people that stand out that are very brave and bold to stand up to many different courageous acts like racism, and other horrible acts. These african american people have done a lot to change people lives and theres so that we can live better as whole. They have went threw many struggles and horrible events just to better the society, risking there lives, jobs and families just to make a change for the world.

The african american person that i have chose to write about is Barack Obama he was actually the first african american president. This is history because there has never been  president that is african american. When Obama became president there were so many americans that were happy because they felt like there would be a change and they felt like they would have hope because of the way the society is today. There were many changes that happened in Obama’s life he had to do a lot to get where he is at now.

Obama worked very hard he had many different jobs that he had worked at that wasnt paying that much and he had to support a family at that. He had worked with low income residents in chicago and he said that helped him understand peoples lives and how life could be very hard and could be a struggle.

Obama has worked very hard to become what he is today in 1996 he started his own political career to become a senate he actually did win. He became a senate for the state of Illinois. So you can say it wasnt really that easy for him to get where he is at today. When he became president i know he was very nervous because I know all he was thinking about probably was how am I going to make a change for the world and society. If i was in his shoes i would  feel the same because all you want to do is make sure you provide the best for the world as possible.

One major thing that Obama did for the world was Obama care make obama care possible. This was basically a health insurance that he created so that people can have health insurance for there children and young ones because health insurance is actually hard to pay for and everyone doesn’t have money like that to pay for these things. I feel like he had very high intentions to change the world and he accomplished that in some ways. Overall i would say president Obama was actually a good president while he was in office and still will be thanked for everything that he has done for the world.
