You cannot convince me Rebecca Yarros wasn't inspired by Vampire Academy. Xaden has so much in common with Dimitri Belikov.

Major spoilers for Fourth Wing/Iron Flame and the Vampire Academy series!

They are both mentors to the fmc in a military academy.

They are both considered the best rider/guardian.

The fmc refuses to cut her hair, even though it's usual in her job. Xaden loves Violet's hair and so does Dimitri with Rose's hair.

Royalty from their father's side.

Xaden and Violet have to work together, because their dragons are mates and can't be separated for long enough. Rose and Dimitri are guardians to Lissa and Christian, who are a couple.

Like Dimitri who became a Strigoi, Xaden became venin!

Violet and Rose also have some similarities. They're both rebellious and impulsive at times. Fiercely protective of their loved ones. Rose originally had a grudge against her mother for leaving her at the academy at a young age and never visiting her. Similarly, Violet thinks her mother doesn't care about her, because she made her become a rider.

I'd love to revisit this post after the Empyrean series is over and after I've reread the Vampire Academy, because I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of stuff.
