KnT Bonus Chapter 1 Translation

Hey everyone!! 

It’s been way too long, but here I am again with my translation of the Kurumi-centric bonus chapter that appeared in the May Issue of Bessatsu Margaret!

Disclaimer: I study Japanese in my spare time, but I’m nowhere near fluent; I’m also not an experienced translator. Though I do my best to compensate for the many gaps in my knowledge with research, I’m definitely not above making stupid mistakes, misinterpreting the text, and poorly conveying what (I think) I understood. Please don’t expect the quality of an official translation - I just want to share what I took from the chapter (right or wrong) with everyone, because it’s frustrating not knowing what’s going on in the story if you don’t know any Japanese. I spent a really long time on this one, and sometimes (often) I ran into walls (translating has me asking myself, “Does anyone actually say this? Did I just make this up? Is this even English?” haha). Thank you for understanding!

At the end of this chapter there’s an announcement that says we’ll get another bonus chapter this fall (my bet is October, half a year from now, but to my knowledge there’s no set date yet). I don’t know if we’ll get a continuation of this chapter, or if the next one will focus on another character / couple; I’ve heard rumors that people who attended Karuho Shiina’s book signing event at the Kimi ni Todoke Exhibition have claimed Ayane will get a story in the future, but these haven’t been confirmed. I do believe we’ll get at least 3 or 4 more of these chapters (enough to be released together in an extra volume down the road). I’ll update you if I hear anything! :)

The other day I made a post sharing the news that Amazon Japan had suspended international shipping for certain items, including magazines. Well, I’m happy to report that the international shipping option for magazines seems to have returned!! I would really encourage you all to buy the May Issue if you’re financially able to (if you’re a fan of “Omoi Omoware, Furi Furare” you’ll really want this - it comes with super cute “OOFF”-themed masking tape!). Kimi ni Todoke “Extra Volume” Update

Long time no talk, Kimi ni Todoke fans!! I hope you’re all doing well!

As some of you may remember, it was announced last November that the May Issue of Bessatsu Margaret (April 13th) would include an “extra volume” of Kimi ni Todoke that would, possibly, allow us to see Sawako and the others post-series. 

The Bessatsu Margaret website has a preview page for the May Issue that gives us a few more details about this “extra volume”, namely that:

1) It’s going to have 50 pages

2) “Sawako has entered university and is in a long-distance relationship with Kazehaya. In the room where she lives alone, Kurumi often hangs around, but…?” (roughly)

So this short extra volume will most likely focus on Sawako and Kurumi’s time together at their university; maybe Sawako feels lonely because she misses Kazehaya a lot and Kurumi tries to steal her cheer her up, or maybe it’ll be a Kurumi-centric chapter. Either way I’m sure it’ll be a sweet story!

This is probably a Bessatsu Margaret exclusive, so the only way to get a copy is to buy the May Issue of the magazine. An official translation (in any language) is very unlikely, and while someone may share scans, there’s no guarantee (I will share my translation but I can’t post any pictures). If you’re a collector of Kimi ni Todoke merchandise or want to be able to read this yourself, consider purchasing the May Issue. I know ordering from Japan can seem extremely daunting, and I’m happy to help you if you have any questions - I use Amazon Japan, and my orders always get to me fairly quickly and in great condition (and pretty affordably; an issue of Betsuma is about $12 - $14, including shipping). Please don’t hesitate to ask me if you’re interested and need help, because I want you to get your Kimi ni Todoke fix! :)

The issue with this bonus volume will be released on April 13th. The final volume (#30) of Kimi ni Todoke will be released on March 23rd (Japan). There’s also an illustration collection being released the same day, though I’m not entirely sure what it will include beyond color illustrations Shiina has done for the series.

Kimi ni Todoke Chapter 123 Translation: “Final” Chapter

Hello Kimi ni Todoke fandom!

Here we are at the final chapter! But don’t cry too much – we’re getting a bit more of the story in April 2018! :D Over the next few months, Bessatsu Margaret will be releasing some “Kimi ni Todoke”-related goodies with issues of their magazine. The following were announced in this month’s issue:

1. January 2018 Issue (December 13): “Kimi ni Todoke” Special Tribute Book (will feature Kimi ni Todoke-inspired art by other shoujo manga artists)

2. February 2018 Issue (January 12): “Long” Interview with Karuho Shiina

3. May 2018 Issue (April 13): “Extra Volume”: I’m not sure what this will be exactly…the announcement says something along the lines of: “Maybe you’ll be able to see Sawako and her friends’ ‘afterwards’…?” This is either a really mean tease, or we’re going to get a glimpse of the characters’ university / post-university lives after all! This bonus story might be one long chapter, or a few chapters covering different characters / stories. Shiina will have a few months to work on it, so the length may approach that of a regular volume (hopefully); still, we probably won’t know more until April.

I’ll definitely translate the bonus story, and I may try to translate the interview with Shiina.

Soon I’ll also write a post about how I buy Bessatsu Margaret, in case any of you would like to collect these bonus items.

Volume 30 is currently scheduled for release in March 2018.

im freaking out over the latest chapter where they do it..... i rewatched the anime and i just can't believe how distant and awkward they were and the actual realistic progress....... im so proud (??) and so happy

It is pretty amazing to revisit the beginning of the series and see Sawako and Kazehaya’s first interactions! As you said, they’ve come such a long way from that initial awkwardness; their relationship has changed so slowly and naturally, and I think that’s a testament to Shiina’s excellent writing. She’s done a fantastic job of employing gradual, nearly imperceptible shifts to advance character development, and I think the long run of the series has allowed her to carefully flesh out their relationship. It’s been a special pleasure to watch Sawako, in particular, find her voice and pursue what she wants with honesty, all while treating others with genuine kindness and respect. Her journey is one that I think will stick with all of us long after the series has finished. :’)

I’m also really proud of them for taking this step together - the greatest distance between them has never been physical, but rather, a difficulty communicating and understanding what the other person is feeling. They’ve gotten so much better at it, but in Chapter 122, I think we really get the sense that a physical separation won’t be enough to break their relationship; they’ve let down any walls that remained between them, and as Sawako says, they can sleep next to each other with the same feelings.

I can’t wait to see what Chapter 123 brings!
