my favorite is how meandering people are, even in the midst of a terrible emergency

they respond to “what is the emergency” with “well, the thing is, four weeks ago–”

and then he’s like “WHAT IS THE EMERGENCY RIGHT NOW”

and they’re like “so what happened this morning was, i said to my wife, i said–”

“WHAT IS CURRENTLY HAPPENING AT THIS MOMENT”

“oh i’m having a heart attack”

my second favorite is how specific he has to get sometimes

like, “what is your emergency?”

“i’m sitting in a pool of blood.”

“… is it… your blood?”

“yes i think so”

“do you know where it’s coming from?”

“probably the stab wound”

“have you been stabbed?”

“oh yah definitely”

Live theater in the His Dark Materials universe must be wild. Surely an actor's daemon also has lines to recite, so their daemon's form probably also factors into casting decisions. Maybe some plays have vague character descriptions for daemons, but I bet other plays have really specific or central daemon characters. And sure, big-budget theaters can afford to hire a separate actor with a particular daemon to stand backstage while their daemon plays its part onstage, but community theaters don't have those kinds of resources.

Like if you're casting for Julius Caesar, surely the real historical Caesar had a pretty iconic daemon, right? Are you going to cast an actor with a pigeon daemon as Caesar and just have everyone suspend their disbelief that it's Caesar's lioness, ἁμαρτία?

Aug-UST, day 2: Familiar strangers

Every day.  They saw each other every day—well, every weekday—on the platform, on the train.  Never really spoke, just a few pragmatic words here and there over the past year, perfunctory thanks for holding the door, apologies for stumbling into each other, noting with communal frustration that the train was late, things like that.

His fashion choices had been getting…increasingly adventurous for the past few months.  It started with louder patterns on his sweaters and the addition of a coat that kinda looked like he’d stolen it from a pirate.  Then the nail polish started—first black, the classic punk kind of boys-in-nail-polish color, then silvers and blues, now neon-bright pink and yellow lemon slices.  As the weather warmed up, the patterned sweaters had given way to bold floral button downs and occasionally this one lace T-shirt that granted tantalizing glimpses of a colorful tattoo over his heart.  Not that she’d been sneaking glances, or anything.

Today, well, he must have had an interesting weekend, because today his hair was pink.  She looked up from her phone as he joined her on the platform just long enough to register who it was—and register the pink—then went back to scrolling.  She glanced up again a moment later, went back to scrolling.  When she looked up for a third time, she pulled her headphones down around her neck and took a step over.

“Hey,” she said with a smile, “your hair goes with your nails.  That’s cool.”

He blinked, slightly started, but then grinned and glanced down at his nails like he wasn’t sure he remembered what they looked like.  “Yeah, yeah it does.  Thanks.”

you might think something like a hacky sack, but that is the misleading nature of this name. Often, they are talking about these:

that is fired out of a shotgun. The cloth is kevlar, and inside is.. THE SAME LEAD PELLETS YOU FIND IN MOST SHOTGUN ROUNDS. 

The kevlar prevents spread and penetration. But people are still getting shot with a shotgun.

That is why, even though you often hear or see “less THAN lethal” the actual technical term for this kind of ammo is “less lethal”. As in still lethal, just not as deadly as a standard shotgun round

This is what is being fired at civilians. If you get hit in the head there is a GOOD chance of you winding up in critical condition or dead. Be careful out there

Convincing people who don’t already agree with things like UBI that people should be paid enough for their work to live is a smaller jump than going straight to trying to convince them of UBI.

Sure, a world where minimum wage isn’t needed because everyone is provided for regardless would be ideal. But a world where we have a viable minimum wage is how we start to build that world.

“Yeah, but [ideal scenario we don’t have the groundwork for] would be better” is a sentiment I see a lot and it doesn’t help.

Stepping stones are important. We gotta get people out of the mud first.

I honestly don’t understand why there aren’t more people who, when given the platform to discuss minimum wage, don’t simply distill it to the simplest of facts:

A forty hour work week is considered full time.

It’s considered as such because it takes up the amount of time we as a society have agreed should be considered the maximum work schedule required of an employee. (this, of course, does not always bear out practically, but just follow me here)

A person working the maximum amount of time required should earn enough for that labor to be able to survive. Phrased this way, I doubt even most conservatives could effectively argue against it, and out of the mouth of someone verbally deft enough to dance around the pathos-based jabs conservative pundits like to use to avoid actually debating, it could actually get opps thinking.

Therefore, if an employee is being paid less than [number of dollars needed for the post-tax total to pay for the basic necessities in a given area divided by forty] per hour, they are being ripped off and essentially having their labor, productivity, and profit generation value stolen by their employer.

Wages are a business expense, and if a company cannot afford to pay for its labor, it is by definition a failing business. A company stealing labor to stay afloat (without even touching those that do so simply to increase profit margins and/or management/executive pay/bonuses) is no more ethical than a failing construction company breaking into a lumber yard and stealing wood.

Our goal as a society should be to protect each other, especially those that most need protection, not to subsidize failing businesses whose owners could quite well subsidize them on their own.
