Every time I find, or re-find, Christian pop that's actually good music, I'm deeply, deeply annoyed. Because it sounds really good and I like it, especially if the lyrics actually sound (almost) normal. Not all of it is shit that sounds like it was written by 12-year-old who might or might not have an AI program trained on evangelical youth pastor sermons. But my problem personally, the thing that breeds the endless simmering irritation, is that I know it's supposed to be Christian. I can't unhear that it's Christian. And that's just deeply, deeply annoying in an inexplicable de-convert way. I can't enjoy a good piece of music knowing it's really about how evil humans are how much people deserve to be punished and don't deserve to be loved by anyone, especially by the god they worship, or how that god needs to destroy their life so they'll only want him, or how deluded and extra evil and depressed every non-christian is, especially if they claim to be an atheist (because atheists don't actually exist), or whatever.

honestly you can convince parents that just about anything is necessary for their kids’ well-being except, like, respecting their boundaries/identities/basic human rights.

Actually, I have a really complicated relationship with the word “love” because of how christians twist and redefine it. They say, “love isn’t a feeling, it’s an action,” and I might agree with them, except that what they actually mean is, “love is doing what I think is best for you, despite or even against your own wishes.” They mean, “love is coercion” and “love has no boundaries” and “love needs no consent.” They mean, “I know best,” they mean, “I won’t listen,” they mean, “I will hurt you if I think your behavior, your being, your nonconformity justifies it, and I will tell you it’s for your own good.” And everyone’s a sinner, so everyone, in a sense, is fair game. But most especially the heretic, the lapsed, the queer, the addict, the slut, the nonbeliever, the racialized & criminalized & poor. They say, “god is love,” and “god knows best,” and “I am god’s hands.” And they say, “god loves you, whether you want it or not.”
