FUCK waiting until morning we die like men and post our thoughts that occur when up way past our bedtime anyway uhmmm sid the sloth was originally written as an unintentionally ableist character who pokes fun at mentally disabled people but especially autistic people.. like every other character gets like at least the level of depth you’d expect from an animated children’s movie about animals but sid is this punching bag for ableist jokes and so much of the humor relies on the type of jokes that are like “hahhaha look at this dude being unintelligent and SLOW and not fitting into social norms! so stupid!” but the thing is people take that to heart. people are so weird about him and compare “ugly” people to him it’s so fucking gross and weird and it’s part of why i don’t trust anybody who hates sid because you can tell they’ve never actually thought about his character and who he may be portraying.. and anyway this is all part of why i choose to reclaim sid for myself and i really see myself in him in a lot of ways that i deem positive despite the fact that the writers don’t. this is why i choose to look deeper into his character and hyper analyze his every action so that i can give him the depth that he deserves. that’s why when i say that sid is the glue of the herd and that he is motivated by only kindness i am serious and why when i talk about ableism in the ice age when it comes to sid being autistic coded i am serious. he’s a character that was written as a poor portrayal of a neurodivergent person and i’m reclaiming him for myself and giving him the depth that the ice age writers refused to. i understand this sloth better than anyone in the whole world . i know what it’s like to be deemed annoying and gross my society and still choose to unapologetically be yourself ❤️
