Gonna... post my first public one-shot here hi :)
Written for @fruitsmother
Summary: As Lan Wangji ascends the stairs that will lead him to both Bichen and possibly more answers regarding Wei Ying's whereabouts the last few months, he reflects.
_______________________________
Lan Wangji hears the Wen soldiers long before he sees them. He makes sure of it, because he wants to make a proper entrance.
It's against the rules. To be needlessly cruel, to be excessively angry, to even dare let himself feel it at all. To misuse his trained sense of propriety and elegance to inspire fear.
Even still, as he settles on the second landing before the top of the long staircase where soldiers are drunkenly celebrating their own cruelty, he finds himself standing straighter. His eyebrows furrow deeper. He ascends the stairs with an air of a man on a quest for vengeance - and he supposes that's not far off.
Because that's what this is, isn't it? Jiang Wanyin and Lan Wangji caught wind of information that led them to their confiscated swords and potentially the whereabouts of Wei Ying, and now that Lan Wangji's heard these men dare to speak his name - dare to mix it in the same breath that spews hatred - he's buzzing with rage. He wants blood in every way his sect has deemed unacceptable.
There's a part of him that feels guilty. Almost. This isn't righteous - Jiang Wanyin has made sure to remind him of this everytime Lan Wangji so much as tightens his jaw. It would decrease his favorability toward Jiang Wanyin if it weren't already at zero, but he's never found it in himself to argue. He's no longer an equal to Jiang Wanyin, who's now a clan leader in his own right; albeit, Lan Wangji will (begrudgingly) grant him, he's been generous enough to not hold it against him. Not outwardly. Even that aside, he knows his place. Lan Wangji's a younger brother to a clan leader, and thus destined to become simply a teacher of a classroom preaching self-righteously about right and wrong. Wrapped around the fingers of a clan leader, his family, the elders, the cultivation world as a whole... He knows. He knows.  So who is Lan Wangji to pretend he's a figure of authority? A life large enough to demand the end of another?
His fingers twitch as he ascends the stairs. He hears those men laugh. It's disgusting, and he almost smells the alcohol, and even moreso the blood. Maybe even Wei Ying's. They do mention him - how he's the son of a servant and how he's apparently undeserving of the title of a young master, as though these men are anything more than drooling beasts themselves - and Lan Wangji has to steady his breathing to keep himself from tearing each of those men apart by the throat and having them hanged by their tongue. It's a white-hot rage now. But he knows Jiang Wanyin is somewhere behind him, as are a handful of Lan disciples, and he told them all he'd take the lead. He had a plan, after all. He and Jiang Wanyin would distract the Wen soldiers while the disciples charged in and collected stolen clan goods. Lan Wangji would attempt to talk, and Jiang Wanyin would step in if a fight broke out. Before, the hope was that it'd be unnecessary - they were drunk after all. It'd be unfair. Immoral, if the circumstances were any different.
Lan Wangji finds his hopes have changed anyway.
He's to the next landing before the top now, and he's begun to make peace with it. That he's angry. He feels an insatiable rage, a need for revenge against men who likely never even met Wei Ying, and simply took Wen Chao's actions as their own victory. Even still, their boasting and audacity are... Disgusting. Disgraceful. He has no other words for it.
Maybe he wouldn't use his hands. He'd use his teeth.
He'd wondered before - what feels like years ago now - if Wei Ying really would turn him into something corrupted if he touched him, just as Shufu expected. It scared him. Scared him to his bones, leaving him sick with it as he turned away from the boy time and time again. But even then, he didn't truly think it was possible to be corrupted. Not by one boy, surely. Especially not him, the ray of sunshine that he is.
He knows now that he misunderstood what his uncle feared. Lan Wangji believed Shufu saw Wei Ying as something evil, something worth punishing by the mere act of existing. Which may be true, but he was not worried about Lan Wangji becoming evil through Wei Ying's influence.
Instead, Shufu was scared of Lan Wangji loving him. Like Lan Wangji's father loved his mother; self-destructively, selfishly, and obsessively. Blindly. The story of Qingheng-Jun as his clan members tell it paints him as a mad man. A younger, cautious Lan Wangji didn't believe it, as he tended to in anything regarding his parents.
Lan Wangji believes it wholeheartedly now. He's known his father was a mad man since the moment Lan Wangji wrapped his forehead ribbon around the wrist of his zhiji in a hidden cave. Since his fingers created music for a heart that stole his own. Since he held a feverish body in his lap in an entirely different cave in painfully different circumstances. Lan Wangji knows his father's love had driven him mad.
Because it's the same love that has Lan Wangji tearing the world apart with possibly his least favorite person becoming his new partner in crime. It's what had him talking back to his elders when Lotus Pier had been under siege. It's what has him ready to drive his sword through Wen Chao - one of the most powerful and dangerous men in the cultivation world - without a second thought. It's what drives Lan Wangji to walk up these stairs. Boiling. Vibrating with an intensity that makes him feel too hot. Like he could explode at any moment, taking everything down with him. He almost hopes for it, except that he has a pair of silver eyes he needs to meet again.
He feels like a string pulled too tightly, seconds away from snapping. A note played too roughly, a guqin retaliating with a makeshift whip.
His chest burns, and he can finally make out the words the men are arrogantly slurring. His fingers itch to prepare themselves for battle. To use the only weapon he has left.
"In a Yiling Teahouse, we all beat him up like a sandbag!"
His fists are clenched so tightly he's sure his palms are bloody. He still holds himself back. Not yet. Patience is something Lan Wangji is well-versed in.
"Too bad you weren't there. You should've seen his face when he was thrown down!"
Lan Wangji, for the second time in his life, allows himself to feel hate.
"Do you think he can climb up again? Be an arrogant brat again?"
Hanguang-Jun, for the first time in his life, allows himself to shed blood for nothing more than personal satisfaction.
"In the end, our boss is the best, huh?"
Lan Zhan, for certainly not the last time, allows himself to forgo the rules and chooses Wei Ying.
He climbs the last step.
"Kneel."
