I slowed this down just a tiny bit because I’m so gay for the way Blake unsheathes Gambol Shroud.

What’s up with Ren?
Many people seem confused on Ren’s behaviour this volume, and after rewatching all the episodes I think I can provide my interpretation of what’s going on. I’ll probably miss a few things but hopefully this gives some people a new perspective.
Ren first begins to act weird in Episode 3 where he blows off Nora’s compliment on his outfit.
This seems to come out of nowhere, however if we go back earlier in the same episode we have the scene where JNR lands down at the dust mine with Elm and Vine.
Ren is seen smiling along with Jaune and Nora.

But then immediately after this Elm makes the comment “Perhaps you kids won’t get yourselves killed after all.”
It at first seems to just mostly be played for laughs with Jaune and Nora pouting, but then we have Ren’s reaction.

He lowers his weapon and he seems a bit stunned by her words.
I think what she said made him feel that if they’re not good enough, they’ll get themselves killed and he doesn’t want to see that happen after everything.
So what does he do?
He starts acting more serious and wants to focus on the mission.
When he blows Nora off, you can see that he actually looks sad for a bit while talking, like he feels bad for doing that, but he doesn’t want to let himself get distracted.

After that we then see Ren training with Elm, seeming to really be invested in it and pushing himself, then later while walking with Nora and Ruby to Robyn’s election party they begin to talk about Salem and how they don’t know how they’re going to defeat her. He gets into a fight with Nora that they should be training instead of going to a party.
Basically Ren thinks that they should focus all their efforts on improving their skills instead of doing anything else because they’re not ready to face Salem.
Later at the party Ren and Nora get into another argument where he implies that he’s worried about advancing their relationship, which is most likely because he’s thinking of their war with Salem and how they could lose each other if they’re not focused.
Then the massacre by Tyrian and Watts happens while Ren and Nora were kissing, and he later agrees with Ironwood’s orders.
I believe he does this because he felt responsible for what happened. He let his guard down and focused on something else for a few moments and a ton of innocent people died. He probably thought that if he hadn’t done that he might of sensed something was going to happen.
After this happened people were confused when Ren seemed to act normal while enacting that (hilariously) chaotic plan on Whitely at the Schnee Manor and then when he held Nora’s hand in the airship on their way to help Mantle but looked away from her.

For the first one keep in mind that it was part of a plan to find out what Jacques had been up to and to help Ironwood, so I think it makes sense he went along with it.
As for the scenes of him putting his hand on Nora’s shoulder after she falls over with the food in the manor, and holding her hand in the airship, both show that he of course still loves Nora even though he’s conflicted on what to do.
Now we move onto the finale and the scene that really really hurt.
Neo, disguised as Nora, changes her eye colour back to Nora’s blue-green and makes a sad face right before Ren can hit her, making him hesitate long enough for her to knock him down and get away.
It obvious shakes him so badly that he starts crying. The thought of hurting Nora brings him to tears even though it wasn’t really her.
Then once they take cover in the training room he yells at Nora. People seemed confused by this too.
Ren says they weren’t ready to become huntsman, but I think that was more directed at himself and he just lashed out at Nora because he’s really angry at himself.
In his mind he’s not strong enough. People died at the election party because he got distracted. He lost focus. He let his heart and love for Nora be a weakness and Neo got away with the relic. If they couldn’t even win that fight how could they ever possibly beat Salem?
TLDR/Summary:
Ren is scared and feels he’s not good enough. He started to push Nora away after hearing Elm’s words so he wouldn’t get distracted from missions and could focus on improving his skills to be able to prevent anyone from getting killed.
But then the moment he let his guard down when they kissed tons of innocent people got killed, further cementing in his mind that he can’t afford to get distracted and they need to focus all their efforts on defeating Salem.
However, he still loves Nora deeply, but that love was used against him and now he probably further blames himself and thinks he was right from the beginning.
