I think everyone’s mathematical journey would have been so much easier if they showed you the sine, cosine, and tangent unit circle (R=1) animation in precalc

"In the Chlamydomonas algae, they separate completely through a process called cytokinesis, becoming their own individual self. But with the colonial algae and on up, that cytokinesis is incomplete, leaving the cells connected. Those connections are further supported by an extracellular matrix made up of glycoprotiens. And as the number of cells increased through evolution, so too did the volume of that matrix. At certain points in a Volvox's life cycle, that transparent scaffolding can make up 99% of its volume."

“We’re narrowing in, right now, on one very small part of Joseph Leidy’s life, and we’re about to talk about why he was wrong about Ouramoeba vorax and should have followed this mycelial thread a bit further. But first, a brief moment to note that Joseph Leidy did incredible work in both paleontology and microscopy. There are even reports that he was the first person to use a microscope for forensic purposes. But intelligence is not the absence of mistakes, and as Leidy wrote in the introduction to Fresh-water Rhizophods of North America: “While I have endeavored to describe things as they appear to be, I am conscious of having been unable to avoid the usual proportion of errors, for which I beg indulgence, and which I leave for others who shall pursue. the same path of investigation to correct.” Good call man!”

CC: When scientists first started watching didinium and paramecium in a flask, the didinium would inevitably consume the paramecium to extinction, in turn driving their own deaths. It was only by building on these experiments and finding ways to adjust the interactions between predator and prey that they could reconstruct the oscillations we expect in nature. Of course, that doesn’t mean they directly copied what nature does. How could they with an experimental design meant to strip many of the confounding elements of ecology from their observations? But their work still provided insights into how organisms interact. It’s like a story: incapable of holding the vast entirety of our existence, and yet still very useful in its narrowness. That the consummate model organism has such a consummate model predator then is quite fortunate for us, even if for the microcosmos, it’s just another story.

21 February 2021 | another lazy Sunday
here’s another look at an unseen side of my desk. as finals approach, I abandon my love for an empty desk and let the chaos pile up. sometimes you just need four different candles, an oil diffuser, and used matches to watch you study.

do you ever just submit something thinking "fuck it, I don't care anymore" but then 5-seconds later you realize you actually care very very much and are seized by a gripping anxiety.
Yeah.

Help Wanted
Hello, my name is Kelly, and I am currently a final year of the international baccalaureate program at my school. I am taking honors level anthropology and for my final paper I decided I wanted to do belonging in the fanfiction space.
To collect data, I wanted to do interviews with fanfiction writers and a survey for fanfiction readers. Hopefully I will be able to gather enough data that I can make some conclusions about the space in general for my paper.
Sadly, I procrastinated (a lot) and only have one week to collect all of my data and write my paper before the deadline, which is February 21. So I am trying hoping that this post will pick up traction and I will be able to get enough data to make solid conclusions.
I will be adding a link to my survey in a reblogged version of this post, and tagging all kinds of things to hopefully get some kind of traffic to the survey. If you see this and would like to comment with a creator you think would be willing to do an interview that would be great, hell if you want an interview and yo uwrite fanfiction, comment as well.
If you decide to respond, know that I really appreciate it. I know I put my self in a bad situation by procrastinating so bad, but I really appreciate any help that can be given to me.

tumblr is such a unique experience in 2021 because it’s probably the only place on the internet, or in real life, really, where there is absolutely no point. there is no agenda, and no purpose, it’s just a place i can create this little bubble of art, and self-expression, and poetry, and live in it peacefully. scrolling through my blog and appreciating photography, fashion, literature, etc. just feels like a beautiful respite from everything outside of this website? no news no performance no productivity just pure vibes
