"Let’s face it," said Chuck. "The only reason we even speak today is because we’re Drift-compatible. Because we’re good at smashing things together. In fact, we don’t even need to speak.”
He picked up the battered radio and dialed it back to its original volume.
"Catch you in the Drift, Dad," he said, and turned it up a little higher.

Chuck doesn't wake up until nearly a month after Pitfall.
He doesn't remember how he got there, or much of their time on the ocean floor, but he's almost positive that Stacker is dead, and he's just a smidgen less positive that he wished he'd died with him.
(Dying like a hero was the only way he'd expected to go out, but of course Marshall Stacker fucking Pentecost had to have other ideas. What is he supposed to do now?)
Then there's his right arm. It's weak, he can barely move it. Shrapnel had embedded itself just above his elbow, with physical therapy he'd (probably) get back the full use of his hand. Good job he's a leftie.
And, okay yes, he's really fucking pissed off that he hadn't gone out with a bang. Now he's a has-been like Becket, and he can't even move from his bed.
Herc is really good about it, bringing Max around all the time, not talking about emotions, doesn't ask how he's feeling, doesn't treat him like he's broken.
(But there's pity in his eyes, and pain. He can't stand seeing his son invalid. Naturally they don't talk about that either.)
Mako comes to see him, and she doesn't talk about it. She sits at his bedside and tells him that she's glad he survived. It eases his guilt at surviving when her father (let's face it, he might as well have been) hadn't. She doesn't blame him, so he tries not to blame himself.
Striker's techs wander in and out as they leave the Shatterdome for good. Without Kaiju there's no need for Jaegers, and without Jaegers - well, they've all been rendered obsolete. They bring him chocolate, mints, grapes, a lot of things he hasn't seen for years.
Tendo stops by once, pats Chuck on the back and tells him that he did well, made them all proud. (Chuck hates that Tendo's opinion matters, but the guy has been around for practically his entire life.)
Herc is glad that Chuck survived, though. Which makes him a little guilty for wishing he wasn't. The guilt makes him snappish, but Herc seems to understand, which is something Chuck doesn't like to think about. He thinks he understands where his father's familiarity with survivor's guilt comes from.
Raleigh doesn't come around until Chuck's been awake almost a month, and slowly becoming mobile. He hasn't expected to see him, even though he figures he does deserve a thank you for clearing a path for Gipsy. It's still a surprise to see him, but he grunts non-committally when the thank you does come, and snaps at Raleigh enough to force him to leave before he punches Chuck once again.
He gets out of the Shatterdome's medical bay a month and a half after he woke from his coma. (Was it even a coma? He never bothered to ask.) His bed still smells like him - Jaeger grease, sweat, and the Old Spice aftershave he's been using since he was fifteen. Max curls up with him, face pressing into Chuck's neck. He's too warm, but Max has been worried he's going to disappear for a while now so he lets him have his close proximity.
Chuck needs the warm press of Max anyway, just to remind him that he's still breathing and there are reasons for that. Mako had given him a tight hug when she left (the one time she came to see him), but other than that he hasn't had any physical contact beyond that of the nurses fussing over him, and the doctors prodding at him.
He never used to want it, but now he needs some comfort. He'll never ask for it, just bottle it up like everything else. Chuck Hansen has issues, (he knows it, though he'll never admit it) and it all comes from repressed emotions and bitterness.
Figuring out what he was going to do with his life now that being a Jaeger pilot no longer counted as a profession was more important than having a breakdown over Pentecost and the distance between him and his dad.
He remembers wanting to be a mechanic as a child, and closes his eyes. Sleep is easier now that he has an idea of where he's going next.
