“Digital Divide: Helping To Bridge The Gap ”
Tumblr media
The Digital Divide, or the computerized split, is a social issue alluding to the varying measure of data between the individuals who approach the Internet and the individuals who don't approach. The term got well known among concerned gatherings, for example, researchers, strategy creators, and promotion gatherings, in the last part of the 1990s. One of the watched solid circumstances are the admittance to computers in schools. The powerful utilization of innovation in homerooms and educating of fundamental innovation abilities to understudies. For instance, a state funded school up in the mountains can't have this sort of instructing as they do not have the assets to assemble and have appropriate types of gear to show their understudies, though tuition based school in the fundamental city can have access to these devices without any problem. Additionally, as students at any rate give old contraptions and convince others to give as a minor help for the understudies up in the far grounds.
The idea of the digital divide refers to the growing gap between the underprivileged members of society and to the privileged ones. Also, the gap of access information of the youth compared to the elderly can also be a factor. The access to information in the developed countries or places is much better as compared to the case in the underdeveloped and progressing areas. As a student, simple actions may lead to meaningful results. We can help to bridge the gap in a way of sharing worthwhile information, letting them know and experience community organizations that offers access to information  and lastly educating ourselves, with that we can also educate others to close the conflict of digital divide. The youth of today are labeled as technology literates/digital natives. We are the most apparent individuals who are active on social media, trends among others while the digital immigrants have difficulties in participating online like communicating and obtaining information especially the advent of mobile gadgets. By practicing the digital citizenship to break the digital divisions as students, we will discipline the digital natives/ourselves the proper way of behaving online with the utmost value/netiquette, respect.
As  students, we observed that a few major contributors to the digital divide include differences in salary, literacy, and even factors such as climate. As anticipated, the lower salary in a country, the less access to the Internet. In nations where individuals worry about where and they will provide food for their family, internet access is less likely to be their major concern. To help bridge this gap we should educate individuals on how to utilize technology as well as disseminate information in a way that people would be able to understand.

“The Setbacks of Piracy”
Tumblr media
Piracy is an illegal form of unconsented distribution of materials that are protected by copyright. Whoever does this crime is responsible for the law/s that he or she violated. Aside from that major setback according to “siia.net” other consequences are: software malfunctions may rise, no warrants that guarantee the security of themselves, “increase their risk of exposure to a debilitating virus that can destroy valuable data” & “risk potential negative publicity, public and private embarrassment.” The simple entry to innovation has implied that throughout the long term, theft has gotten more wild. For instance, CD scholars are accessible off the rack at exceptionally low costs, making music robbery a basic issue. One of the difficulties in theft are; Quality of pilfered motion pictures and tunes probably won't be as exact and precised when contrasted with unique duplicates. It may not be as lovely to watch or tune in when contrasted with the first duplicate. In spite of the fact that downloading music and film makes it effectively accessible to the majority, it additionally makes it spread all over. In any case, considering something that is effectively accessible is normally of a lesser worth. Something that is scant is valuable while something that is abundant will in general be of a lesser worth. Subsequently, this outcomes in the cost of the music or film to devalue.
Pirating in its very nature is illegal and is actually a form of theft of intellectual property. One of the numerous drawbacks of piracy is the fact that individuals are not paying any cash for the movies, music, or program. The profit is significantly impacted and the cost to create the material remains the same. This basically costs the maker of the pirated material the distinction and makes it exceptionally difficult to decide how successful the fabric was with the public. Most artists are against piracy since it is affecting the amount of cash they earn.
There are a lot of laws about what people can and cannot do with purchased content. Generally, purchasing content means you are allowed to listen, play, read, or use that content yourself. On the other hand, it does not give you the right to share, copy and let others download it or make money off of it for yourself, like buying a movie and then charging people to come see it. Piracy is a crime. Unfortunately, lots of people think sharing software, games, music, ebooks, pictures, etc. is just a convenient tool to help reduce the costs. Piracy negatively affects every single person working in these industries and their supply chains. Copying software or digital content without permission of the content creator is stealing, an act of piracy.

“Understanding the Relevance of Information Literacy in the Midst of Social Era”
Tumblr media
Today, Information has become a fundamental component of education, and literacy is considered a responsibility of all practitioners. In the new period of information today, there are numerous challenges to induce information since it comes from numerous sources. All the sources must be sifted and managed carefully to induce the quality of the information. The skills to find, assess, and use information are exceptionally vital especially since the advent of the online library and Internet resources.
The social era allows us to research information instantly however unlike published books that went through a process of editing and revisions before publishing, the contents online are not all thoroughly checked. Additionally, anybody can post which is not reliable. According to Quipper (2020) “Information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning” gives us accountability to recognize the need and evaluate the reliability and credibility of information and the source of our knowledge and ethics.
In this period of time, the availability of information is anywhere. You can access it whenever you are going. Simply being exposed to a great deal of information will not make you an informed citizen, hence it is one way for people to critically evaluate and use this information effectively. Not all you see and read especially in social media applications are reliable and truthful. With that, we need to understand how to be an Information Literate in this era. Information literacy is important for today's learners since it promotes critical thinking skills like asking questions and seeking answers, finding reliable and credible information, and evaluating sources in fostering successful learners and effective contributors of information in this Social Era.
If the industrial era was about building things, the social era is about connecting things, people, and ideas. Understanding the relevance of Information Literacy makes the user a skeptical individual in every information he/she receives, it also molds ones skill in fact-checking, verifying the headlines and claims in every informative post the user is about to discover in browsing social media, keeping in mind that today’s information, facts, news, and other sources of information can be fake or revised to fool their target mass audience.

“Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship”
Tumblr media
According to Coronel (2001) as cited by Karunungan (2020), “Philippine media are ‘products of a turbulent history’ and that the ‘tradition defines Philippine journalism is polemical and political.’  Whereby the rise of media has been closely knit with political upheavals.” Karunungan stated that the diversity of the Philippine media is developing, and the most popular media platforms are still television and radio for obtaining information (2020). Internet emergence created an impact on “information sharing where users can simultaneously be producers and consumers of information” (Karunungan, 2020). Karunungan also added that “social media has been used to discredit traditional media and has been used to proliferate disinformation for political propaganda” (2020).                                                                 The love-hate relationship between media and government stems from the politicians being unsatisfied with what the media illustrates them, but ironically the politicians heavily rely on the media for the people to easily recognize them especially during elections. There have been events where the media has intentionally taken something out of context to score a feature, and a few politicians have overlooked or boycotted writers from certain outlets because of allegations of bias. The love and hate relationship of the government and media implies lawmakers blames the media for not filtering and covering up their image to people and the media criticizes lawmakers for their bad and doubtful doings. Controlling the real happenings is one of the common technique between the government and the press. Hence, they are unsatisfied with each other but they still relay on each other. In short saying, they got each others back. Isn't it ironic, when all is well they don't mind each other when in times of crisis and issues they both got each others back. That is how the relationship of media and government in the Philippine setting. If we put it in a family perspective, the government will be the eldest sibling while the media is the youngest. Obviously, this gives the government a upper hand in setting the ground rules for the media and then it will have the choice to follow what is said or chose to exploit the real tea. People are saying that some news that are reported are biased, because of this the government releases statements that will then oppose the media. It’s a cycle once one opposes another. Both have the power to change people’s perspectives. But despite that, let us never forget without media, there would be no transparency in the government.

Media and information literacy assist us and gives us the empowerment to have an ability to develop and adapt yourself /others to the rise of technology.  An individual must be media and information literate to be vigilant and survive the knowledge and issues the world imparts to us. Everyone is expected to utilize the available sources of information from media in a responsible, ethical, and effective manner by being smart, critical user, and life-long learner.
Being media and information literate helps a person to think critically at all times and to strengthen his or her interpretation and observations from the information provided. Critical thinking permits an individual to look at an issue and realize there is extra information to discover, assess, and apply before coming up with conclusions. Information proficiency provides the puzzle pieces needed to unravel, decode, or evaluate information gathered from observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication.
The value of a wise and careful media user will result in well-informed individuals. These two values are interconnected with each other, being careful is being wise as well. It is because being wise helps people to discern faulty information from truthful ones. To be able to think twice if those sources of information are reliable and credible. In that way, we practice carefulness, we dissect even the smallest details of the specific information. We become well-informed individuals and also an example to the world who has a huge number of media users who easily believe in what they see and read and be scammed.
As a media and information literate, one of the important values it equips a person is a life long learning. As technology is slowly being a part of our lives today, receivers and producers of media and information must adhere to the value of being a lifelong learner to avoid certain mistakes in the long run. Another value to be imbued with the user is making informed decisions as humans are prone to err in this medium, it is best to adhere this value for you to be knowledgeable on how to evaluate your judgment in certain degrees.
