The German translation is a bit disappointing - it completely ignores the most common meaning of “gay” and goes straight for the “happy/playful” area...

German: “verschmitzter als einen Baum voller Affen, die gerade eine gehörige Portion Lachgas eingeatmet hatten.”

Translation: “more mischievous than a tree full of monkeys who just inhaled a good amount of laughing gas”

(actually, that’s a pretty 1:1 translation except that we’re leaving out the probably intended meaning of the “gay” part)

As of late, I was thinking about how literary translation is absolutely fascinating. It has the opportunity to become a complete disaster at every other sentence but when it is done well it is absolute delight to read and to compare with the original. Like, have you ever thought about how hard it is to translate puns? It is practically a god tier of literary translation.

So, I’ve been thinking about this and I know what my most favorite instance of wonderfully translated pun is: it is the gayer than a treeful of monkeys on nitrous oxide one, from Good Omens.

I’ve read three different fan translations of Good Omens in Russian (when it was published officially I picked it up in a library specifically to look up how had they translated this phrase) and some of them were better and some of them were worse but all of them were centered on the fact that in russian language word blue can mean both color and ‘a gay man’. My favorite vertion of this phrase was something like bluer than the sky on a booklet advertising a tropical island vacation, and others were some kind of generic like a sky in the spring or something.

I’m not really sure where I was going with this except that I’m really curious now how it was translated into other languages. So pls, tell me?

Matsuda Saki, former 87th class Cosmos Troupe musumeyaku (stage name: Sakihana An) went to see Taiyouden and posted in her blog about it yesterday. I thought it’s a beautiful entry from a douki POV, so here is a quick translation:

“I went to see Chigi-chan’s taidan show!

At the home ground, Takarazuka.

How many years has it been, since I last saw a show in Takarazuka.

No matter what, I wanted to see Chigi as Top in our home base, once.

The city of Takarazuka is indeed unique. Things I had forgotten came back to life the one after the other.

Like flipping one by one through the pages of an album I had carefully shut…

There were even reunions with people from back in the day, it all somehow left a nostalgic aftertaste.

I still dream about it from time to time. Dance steps I should know escape me. I am late for my turn to go on stage.

These always give me cold sweat in my dream.

Then, there are the dreams that I’m still with Takarazuka.

These ones always put me in an extremely happy mood.

When I think of Takarazuka, bitter, sad, happy, all sorts of feelings come to overflow inside me.

I gave it my all.

However, when I look at Chigi, I start thinking “did I truly give it my all after all?”.

Her “giving it your all” always exceeds my imagination.

When her first shinjin kouen lead was approaching, she had dreadful dark circles under her eyes, that even Takarazuka’s famous heavy makeup could not cover.

“Chigi~, not even makeup can hide those circles!!” we’d all laugh and shake it off on the surface, but honestly, we were worried she’d collapse.

That dreadful face spoke for exactly how early she would come every morning to rehearse on her own, in the midst of the harsh conditions of rehearsing for shinjin kouen between regular show performances. Us douki never said it out loud, but we knew ourselves exactly how hard and intense that was, so we had only admiration and respect for her conviction.

I can still see her from back then even now; it has become my own standard for what “truly exerting youself” is like, and when the time calls for it I ask myself “am I making an effort like that?”.

Rather than a comparison, it feels like a target.

This play may be the last one, but as expected, Chigi remains Chigi.

Unchanged.

Earnestly facing the role.

As if she’s thinking of nothing else.

It’s so Chigi, it makes me smile.

May she keep being just like that until the end”
